Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. STEP 1. Check whether the DTC is stored again. 
    1. To release the electronic control coupling (front) protection control, leave the vehicle for 15 minutes or longer after the high fluid temperature warning on the warning indicator disappears.
    2. Erase the DTC.
    3. Carry out the test drive.
      NOTE: Do not carry out the severe test drive.
    4. Check if the DTC is stored.

    Q: Is DTC No. C161F stored? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 2.
    2. NO:  This diagnosis is complete.
  2. STEP 2. Scan tool (M.U.T.-III) CAN bus diagnostics. 

    Use scan tool (M.U.T.-III) to perform the CAN bus diagnosis.

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to  Step 4.
    2. NO:  Repair the CAN bus lines. (Refer to CAN BUS DIAGNOSTICS TABLE ). After repairing the CAN bus line, go to Step 3.
  3. STEP 3. Check whether the DTC is stored again. 

    Q: Is DTC No. C161F stored? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 4.
    2. NO:  This diagnosis is complete.
  4. STEP 4. Scan tool (M.U.T.-III) data list 

    Item 12: Engine speed (Refer to DATA LIST REFERENCE TABLE  ).

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 5.
    2. NO:  Perform the diagnosis for the engine control system. (Refer to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART < 2.4 L Engine >, DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART < 3.0 L Engine >).
  5. STEP 5. Scan tool (M.U.T.-III) data list 

    Check the following data list. (Refer to DATA LIST REFERENCE TABLE  ).

    • Item No.21: Wheel speed sensor < FL >
    • Item No.22: Wheel speed sensor < FR >
    • Item No.23: Wheel speed sensor < RL >
    • Item No.24: Wheel speed sensor < RR >

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 6.
    2. NO:  Perform the troubleshooting for the ASC. (Refer to TROUBLESHOOTING ).
  6. STEP 6. Scan tool (M.U.T.-III) data list 

    Check the following data list. (Refer to DATA LIST REFERENCE TABLE  ).

    • Item No.34: Ambient temperature (CAN input)
    • Item No.35: Ignition off time (CAN input)

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 7.
    2. NO:  Perform the diagnosis for the ETACS. (Refer to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART ).
  7. STEP 7. Check of the electronic control coupling (Front) 

    Refer to ELECTRONIC CONTROL COUPLING SOLENOID (FRONT) CHECK < VEHICLES WITH S-AWC >  .

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 8.
    2. NO:  Replace the transfer assembly (Refer to TRANSFER ASSEMBLY < AWD >  < CVT > or TRANSFER ASSEMBLY < A/T >).
  8. STEP 8. Check whether the DTC is stored again. 
    1. To release the electronic control coupling (front) protection control, leave the vehicle for 15 minutes or longer after the high fluid temperature warning on the warning indicator disappears.
    2. Erase the DTC.
    3. Carry out the test drive.
      NOTE: Do not carry out the severe test drive.
    4. Check if the DTC is stored.

    Q: Is DTC No. C161F stored? 

    1. YES:  Replace the AWC-ECU. (Refer to AWC-ECU < Vehicles with S-AWC >  ).
    2. NO:  Intermittent malfunction. (Refer to HOW TO COPE WITH INTERMITTENT MALFUNCTION ).
