Removing and installing or replacing airbag module on passenger's side (Cooper Convertible)
Attention!
Operations on pyrotechnical devices may only be carried out by authorized experts.
Improper, unauthorized operations may result in serious dangers.
Unauthorized persons are strictly prohibited from performing any operations on this system.
Failure to observe correct procedures can deploy the airbag and cause injuries.
A damaged head airbag must be replaced.
A damaged head airbag exhibits an impaired protective function and in extreme cases loses its protective function altogether.
Preliminary work needed:
- Remove DASHBOARD STORAGE COMPARTMENT .
- Remove INSTRUMENT PANEL TRIM .
Removal:
Case 1: Front passenger airbag is attached with 6 screws.
Unscrew all bolts on the airbag module (1).
Remove the airbag module (1) from the instrument panel.
Case 2: Front passenger airbag is attached with 12 screws.
Unscrew all bolts on the airbag module (1).
Remove the airbag module (1) from the instrument panel.
Case 3: Front passenger airbag is attached with 11 screws.
Attention!
The marked screw point (3) serves as an example for the unused screw point.
Mark the unused screw point (3) on the instrument panel.
The screw point (3) must not be reused during installation; see "Installation".
Loosen screws (1).
Remove the front passenger airbag (2).
Installation:
Case 1: Installation of the removed front passenger airbag in a new instrument panel.
Position the front passenger airbag (2).
Fasten the front passenger airbag (2) with 12 bolts.
Tighten down screws (1).
Tightening torque 72 12 01AZ .
Installation note:
A further retorque of the screws using the torque wrench is not permitted!
The torque must be used for at least 11 bolts.
If the tightening torque is not applied on more than 1 screw, the instrument panel must be replaced.
Case 2: Installation of a new front passenger airbag on the removed instrument panel. Removed front passenger airbag was fastened with 6 bolts.
Position the front passenger airbag (2).
Fasten the front passenger airbag (2) with 12 bolts.
Tighten down screws (1).
Tightening torque 72 12 01AZ .
Installation note:
A further retorque of the screws using the torque wrench is not permitted!
The torque must be used for at least 11 bolts.
If the tightening torque is not applied on more than 1 screw, the instrument panel must be replaced.
Case 3: Installation of a new front passenger airbag on the removed instrument panel. Removed front passenger airbag was fastened with 11 bolts.
Position the front passenger airbag (2).
Do not use the screw point (3) marked during "Removal".
Attention!
The marked screw point (3) serves as an example for the unused screw point.
Secure the front passenger airbag (2) with 11 bolts at the same screw points that were already used.
Tighten down screws (1).
Tightening torque 72 12 01AZ .
Installation note:
A further retorque of the screws using the torque wrench is not permitted!
The tightening torque must be applied on all 11 screws.
If the tightening torque is not applied on 1 screw, the instrument panel must be replaced.
Attention!
Risk of damage!
Retorque using the torque wrench is not permitted!
The prescribed tightening torque must not be exceeded!
The following tightening specifications must be adhered to at all times.
- Tighten all screws on the airbag module to the prescribed tightening torque without retorque.
Tightening torque 72 12 01AZ .
- Check that for all screws (1), the screw head (1) is seated without any gap, for example, by using a thin paper strip (2) as shown in the illustration:
- Paper strip (2) slides under the screw head (1). The screw (1) is not seated without a gap, screw connection is not correctly seated:
Loosen screw (1) and tighten it once again to the same, prescribed tightening torque without retorque.
Increasing the tightening torque in order to seat the screw head in the correct position is not permitted.
Each screw point is allowed to be reused only once.
Tightening torque 72 12 01AZ .
- Paper strip (2) does not slide under the screw head (1). The screw (1) is seated without a gap, screw connection is correctly seated.
- Although the screw point was reused once, a paper strip (2) fits under the screw head (1). Although the screw point was reused once, a bolt (1) is not abutting without a gap. Screw connection is not correct. The instrument panel must be replaced.
Required follow-up work:
- Install instrument panel TRIM PANEL .
- Install instrument panel STORAGE COMPARTMENT (only F55 and F56)
