Replacing rear silencer (B36, B38) (Cooper)
Only perform this repair work after engine has cooled down.
Injury hazard!
Call on the assistance of a second technician to remove the rear silencer
Preliminary work needed:
- Remove both rear TENSION STRUTS .
- Support rear silencer with a suitable jack and secure against falling down.
Removal:
Loosen screws (1).
Remove cross strut (2) on rear axle support.
Carry over separation point to faulty rear silencer and mark.
Secure rear silencer against falling off.
Cut through exhaust pipes at marked point with a suitable tool.
Spray rubber mount (1) with lubricant and detach from exhaust system.
Replaced damaged rubber mounts.

Spray rubber mount (1) with lubricant and detach from rear silencer.
Replaced damaged rubber mounts.
Parts: rubber mount
Lower and remove rear silencer with assistance of a second technician.
Installation:
Install new rear silencer and connect rubber mount (1) to rear silencer.
Connect rubber mount (1) to rear silencer.
Adjust new rear silencer and connect by clamp to center silencer.
Center clamp and tighten down.
Tightening torque 18 20 3AZ .
Install cross strut (2) on rear axle support.
Tighten down screws (1).
Tightening torque 33 31 2AZ .
Required follow-up work:
- Install both rear TENSION STRUTS .
- Check exhaust system for leak tightness.
