54 34 101 Removing and installing soft top completely (semi-automatically)

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

Opening shut-off valve: 

Turn emergency operation screw (1) (if necessary with hexagon socket wrench from toolkit) on hydraulic unit (2) four to five turns in counterclockwise direction up to limit position.

IMPORTANT: Do not turn emergency operation screw (1) beyond limit position.

Unfasten plug connection (1) and disconnect.

Unfasten screws (2).

Tightening torque 54 34 2AZ .

Lift out hydraulic unit holder (3) and set down in luggage compartment.

Disconnect clip connections (1) from hydraulic lines to body.

Pry out cover welt strip (1) all around the body aperture.

Installation note: 

Make sure cover welt strip (1) is correctly seated on body.

Release screws (1).

Tightening torque 54 34 14AZ .

Lever out soft-top bow (1) on left and right from retaining clips (2).

Set down soft top (2) and secure in this position with tensioning strap (1).

NOTE: Tensioning strap (1) must be clean.

Protect cover against contamination if necessary.

In case of a replacement part, the soft top is delivered with the tensioning strap.

Transfer position of left and right main bearings to the body. (also applies to replacement)

Installation note: 

Align main bearing to mark.

See ADJUSTING SOFT TOP .

Dismantling/installing ball sockets: 

  1. Push on clamp in direction of groove with screwdriver
  2. Lift off ball socket from ball pin
  3. Slide clamp back
  4. Fit ball socket on ball stud and snap into place with force
IMPORTANT: Never lift off ball socket with engaged clamp.

Before installation, grease ball socket if necessary. Pack grease into two opposite positions in socket. The grease spreads after installation on the ball pin all round in the ball socket.

Link and right sides: 

Push open retaining clips (1)

Detach hydraulic cylinder from main bearing.

Feed through hydraulic cylinder under holder (2).

Right side: 

Unfasten plug connection (1) and disconnect.

Release upper screws (2), slacken lower-screw.

Tightening torque 54 34 01AZ .

Left side: 

Unfasten plug connection (1) and disconnect.

Unfasten screws (2).

Tightening torque 54 34 01AZ .

Slacken screw (3).

Tightening torque 54 34 01AZ .

NOTE: Carry out this part of the work with a second person assisting.

Grip the soft top on the left and right sides by the main bearing and frame.

Lift the soft top carefully and uniformly with hydraulic unit out of the body.

Lay the soft top down on a clean working surface.

Check OIL LEVEL , topping up if necessary.

Run a function check.
