17 00 039 Venting cooling system and checking for water leaks (S62)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 BMW Z8, 2002 BMW Z8, 2001 BMW Z8, and 2000 BMW Z8. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Danger of scalding!
Only perform this work after engine has cooled down.

On vehicles with independent heating, comply with additional venting routine.

Drain off and top up coolant. Refer to 17 00 005 Draining and adding coolant (S62)  .

Check cooling system for leaks. Refer to 17 00 009 Checking cooling system for water leaks  .

To ensure the cooling system is properly vented, it is absolutely essential to follow the steps below:

  1. Open coolant expansion tank.
  2. Turn on ignition and set heater to max. temperature. Set blower to low setting. This opens the heating valves and sets the auxiliary water pump in operation.
  3. Pour coolant into coolant expansion tank to a level of approx. 5 mm above max. cold fill level.
  4. Close coolant expansion tank.
  5. Run engine up to operating temperature.
  6. Check coolant level.

Allow engine to cool down before checking coolant level. Coolant temperature must not exceed 30°C. If ambient temperature is above 30°C, then allow engine to cool down at least to ambient temperature.

Check coolant level; if necessary, top up coolant until fluid level is in line with marking on coolant expansion tank.

NOTE: The tank mark indicates the fluid level at approx. 20°C. Use only recommended coolant.
