Function requirements, general
- No overvoltage or undervoltage (operating voltage range between 8 volts to 17.5 volts)
- "Outer OFF delay" function and "Locator lighting" function activated in the instrument cluster (IC) control unit (A1/1)
- The humidity sensor/light sensor/rain sensor/sun sensor (B38/3) (with CODE HH4 (THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control)) or the humidity sensor/light sensor/rain sensor (B38/2) (with CODE JF1 (Rain sensor)) signals "Darkness recognized"
- Illumination switch (S1) in "AUTO" position
The instrument cluster (IC) control unit sends the status of the "Outer OFF delay" and "Locator lighting" function via interior CAN (CAN B) to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit (N10/1).
The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit directly reads in the status of the illumination switch.

The ambient brightness is detected by the humidity sensor/light sensor/rain sensor. It directly reads in the signals of the light sensor, evaluates them, and sends the information on ambient brightness (twilight level) via the roof LIN (LIN B13) to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.

Headlamp switch-off delay (SWA), general
The SWA is used for leaving and finding the vehicle safely in darkness.
The SWA duration can be configured in the instrument cluster (IC) control unit between 0 seconds and 60 seconds in 15-second steps.
The following light functions are activated here:
- Standing/parking lights actuation
Detailed information on the standing/parking lights actuation is available in the separate subfunction "Standing/parking lights actuation, function".
During the SWA, the light sources are actuated with greater intensity and therefore emit more light than during standing/parking lights actuation.
- Ambient illumination via liftgate ambient illumination 1 (E20/3) (with CODE LC8 (Liftgate ambient illumination))
- Ambient illumination via liftgate ambient illumination (E20) (with CODE LC8 (Liftgate ambient illumination))
- Ambient illumination via left exit and warning lamp (E20/1) (with CODE LB9 (Illuminated exits) and right exit and warning lamp (E20/2) with CODE LB9 (Illuminated exits))
The SWA function is comprised of the following subfunctions:
- Function sequence for SWA (outer OFF delay function)
- Function sequence for locator lighting (AFB)
The headlamp switch-off delay and locator lighting functions run in parallel if necessary. An active headlamp switch-off delay (SWA) function is not terminated by a requested AFB function and vice versa.
Function sequence for SWA (outer OFF delay function)
The SWA function is activated by the driver after the engine has been switched off (change in circuit status from "Circuit 15 ON" to "Circuit 15R ON") for the configured period of time. The electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73) sends the status of circuit 15 via interior CAN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.
The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit then activates the standing/parking lights actuation. At the same time, the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit sends the request to switch on the Standing/parking lights actuation via interior CAN to the left front door control unit (N69/3) and the right front door control unit (N69/4).
The left front door control unit actuates the left exit and warning lamp (with CODE LB9 (Illuminated exits)) directly.
The right front door control unit actuates the right exit and warning lamp (with CODE LB9 (Illuminated exits)) directly.
The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit actuates the liftgate ambient illumination and the liftgate ambient illumination 1 (with CODE LC8 (Liftgate ambient illumination)) directly.
The function starts again by opening a vehicle door. The liftgate or the rear-end doors are evaluated as if they were vehicle doors. If all vehicle doors are closed again, the function is restarted.
The status of the front doors is sent by the left front door control unit and the right front door control unit via the interior CAN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.
The active SWA is terminated by switching on circuit 15 or by triggering an anti-theft alarm system ATA [EDW] alarm with CODE FZ5 (Anti-theft alarm system) or with CODE FY1 (Theft protection package).
Function sequence for locator lighting (AFB)
When unlocking the vehicle, the ambient illumination is switched on for a period of approx. 40 seconds (time for the automatic relocking).
The electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit sends the status of the central locking via the interior CAN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.
The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit then activates the standing/parking lights actuation. At the same time, the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit sends the request to switch on the ambient illumination via interior CAN to the left front door control unit and the right front door control unit.
The left front door control unit actuates the left exit and warning lamp (with CODE LB9 (Illuminated exits)) directly.
The right front door control unit actuates the right exit and warning lamp (with CODE LB9 (Illuminated exits)) directly.
The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit actuates the liftgate ambient illumination and the liftgate ambient illumination 1 (with CODE LC8 (Liftgate ambient illumination)) directly.
