Function requirements, general

IMPORTANT

Model 447.6/7

The "Adaptive Highbeam Assist" function is selected via the control level in the instrument cluster (IC [KI]) control unit (A1/1). The instrument cluster (IC [KI]) control unit (A1/1) sends the corresponding status via the interior CAN (CAN B) to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit (N10/1).

IMPORTANT

Model 447.8, model 448.8

The "Adaptive Highbeam Assist" function is selected via the control level in the instrument cluster (IC [KI]) control unit (A1/1). The instrument cluster (IC [KI]) control unit (A1/1) sends the corresponding status via the user interface CAN (CAN HMI), gateway for user interface CAN (N93/4), chassis CAN (CAN E), electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73) and interior CAN (CAN B to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM control unit (N10/1).

IMPORTANT The CDI control unit (N3/33) or the CDI control unit (N3/36) or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/34) (with engine 274) sends the "Engine running" and "Drivetrain operational" signals via chassis CAN (CAN E) electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73) and interior CAN (CAN B) to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit (N10/1)

The position of the combination switch (S4) is read in directly by the steering column tube module (MRM) control unit (N80) which then sends the corresponding status via the chassis CAN (CAN E) electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73) and interior CAN (CAN B) to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit (N10/1).

The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit (N10/1) sends the release status via the interior CAN (CAN B), electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73) and font end CAN (CAN G) to the multifunction camera (MFK) control unit B84/8).

The multifunction camera (MFK) control unit (B84/8) is the master control unit for the Adaptive Highbeam Assist.

Function sequence for adaptive high beams

The traffic and environment situation in front of the vehicle is detected and evaluated by the multifunction camera (MFK) control unit (B84/8). Actuating the actuator motors installed in the left front LED lamp unit (E1/1) and the right front LED lamp unit (E2/1) provides for optimum illumination of the road surface without dazzling other road users The multifunction camera (MFK) control unit (B84/8) uses the brightness shape structure color and motion of the objects detected to differentiate between preceding or oncoming road users street lights signs or other parts of the traffic-related environment The picture recognition module integrated in the multifunction camera (MFK) control unit (B84/8) evaluates the distances e.g. to other road users It assesses the outside brightness level of the vehicle environment and detects extreme weather conditions (e.g. dense fog, heavy snowfall) or tunnel crossings.

The multifunction camera (MFK) control unit (B84/8) evaluates the following information, among other things, to implement the function:

The steering column tube module (MRM) control unit (N80) calculates the steering wheel angle and sends the signal via the chassis CAN (CAN E) electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73) and front end CAN (CAN G) to the multifunction camera (MFK) control unit (B84/8).

The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) control unit (N30/4) sends the vehicle speed via the chassis CAN (CAN E), electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73) and front end CAN (CAN G) to the multifunction camera (MFK) control unit (B84/8).

The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) control unit (N2/18) sends information about the yaw behavior of the vehicle via the chassis CAN (CAN E) electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73) and front end CAN (CAN G) to the multifunction camera (MFK) control unit (B84/8).

A differentiation is made between the following Adaptive High Beam Assist functional states:

Optical headlamp range adjustment (as from 25 km/h)

The multifunction camera (MFK) control unit (B84/8) sends the "Optical headlamp range adjustment" request depending on the distance of the vehicle to other road users and the geometry of the road (differences in height angle) via the front end CAN (CAN G) with the electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit interface (N73) to the left headlamp control unit (E1/1n9) and the right headlamp control unit (E2/1n9).

The left headlamp control unit (E1/1n9) directly actuates the left active curve light actuator motor (E1/1m2) and the left light distribution actuator motor (E1/1m3).

The right headlamp control unit (E2/1n9) directly actuates the right active curve light actuator motor (E2/1m2) and the right light distribution actuator motor (E2/1m3).

The headlamp units of the left front LED lamp unit (E1/1) and the right front LED lamp unit (E2/1) are raised accordingly. The road surface is better illuminated without causing a dazzling effect for other road users. The headlamp range varies between 65 m (standard lighting) and 300 m.

IMPORTANT The current position of the left light distribution actuator motor (E1/1m3) is 'reported to the left headlamp control unit (E1/1n9) and the current position of the right light distribution actuator motor (E2/1m3) is reported to the right headlamp control unit (E2/1n9) To this end the left headlamp control unit (E1/1n9) directly reads in the signal from the left light distribution position sensor (E1/1b2) while the right headlamp control unit (E2/1n9) directly reads in the signal from the right light distribution position sensor (E2/1b2).

Automatic high beams (as from 30 km/h)

If no other road users are detected, the multifunction camera (MFK) control unit (B84/8) activates the "automatic high beams" function.

The multifunction camera (MFK) control unit (B84/8) sends the "High beams ON" request via the front end CAN (CAN G) with the electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit interface (N73) to the left headlamp control unit (E1/1n9) and to the right headlamp control unit (E2/1n9). In addition, the multifunction camera (MFK) control unit (B84/8) sends the request via the front end CAN (CAN G), electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73) and interior CAN (CAN B) to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit (N10/1).

The activated function is visually indicated to the driver in the instrument cluster (IC [KI]) control unit (A1/1).

On model 447.6/7, the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit (N10/1) sends the "High beams ON" request via the interior CAN (CAN B) to the instrument cluster (IC [KI]) control unit (A1/1), which then actuates the high beams indicator lamp (A1/1e3).

On model 447.8, 448.8, the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit (N10/1) sends the "High beams ON" request via interior CAN (CAN B), electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73), chassis CAN (CAN E), gateway for user interface CAN (N93/4) and user interface CAN (CAN HMI) to the instrument cluster (IC [KI]) control unit (A1/1), which then actuates the high beams indicator lamp (A1/1e3).

The left headlamp control unit (E1/1n9) directly actuates the left light distribution actuator motor (E1/1m3) and sends the "High beams ON" request via the left headlamp LIN (LIN G1) to the left front actuation module, LED exterior lighting (E1/1n7), which directly actuates the left high beam (E1/1e1).

The right headlamp control unit (E2/1n9) directly actuates the right light distribution actuator motor (E2/1m3) and sends the "High beams ON" request via the right headlamp LIN (LIN G2) to the right front actuation module, LED exterior lighting (E2/1n7), which directly actuates the right high beam (E2/1e1).

On roads with street lamps positioned regularly, the automatic high beams are deactivated.

Adaptive Highbeam Assist limits

In tight curves, the multifunction camera (MFK) control unit (B84/8) may not recognize oncoming vehicles or only do so very late due to the detection angle of 35°.

On streets with structural separation (e.g. guardrails on freeways) the headlamps of oncoming vehicles are often concealed. These vehicles cannot be recognized by the multifunction camera (MFK) control unit (B84/8). Due to the geometry, the structural separation and the location of the headlamps on cars, the drivers of the oncoming cars are not dazzled. Truck drivers, however, may be dazzled due to the high seat position. The clearance lamps on trucks are not sufficient for recognition.

When driving over hills, oncoming vehicles are only recognized late on, which is why the automatic high beams are also switched off later. In this situation, however, the driver of the oncoming vehicle is also dazzled by the low beams.

The maximum visibility range of the multifunction camera (MFK) control unit (B84/8) is 500 to 800 m, depending on the light conditions.

A reduced range of vision (snow, fog, rain) can result in a reduced recognition performance.

When illuminating large, highly reflective surfaces (e.g. traffic signs), the light output is reduced below a specific distance in order to minimize any self-dazzling effect.

In the event of restricted visibility of the multifunction camera (MFK) control unit (B84/8) (fogging or icing), the Adaptive Highbeam Assist function is deactivated.

With bright lights that appear suddenly (e.g. street lamps, traffic lights), the automatic high beams are deactivated.

Some reflectors cannot be clearly differentiated from road users. The automatic high beams are deactivated because of the existing danger of dazzling other road users.
