Remove/Check/Install Front Axle Brake Pads - AR42.10-S-1610E

DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
DANGER Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work. Before starting the engine, actuate brake pedal several times until pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system. AS42.50-Z-0002-01A 
CAUTION Risk of poisoning  from swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury  from skin and eye contact with brake fluid Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid. AS42.50-Z-0001-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Unscrew cap of brake fluid reservoir. INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Correct the brake fluid level only after the brake pedal has been operated several times. The brake linings (5) must make contact with the brake disk. Firm resistance should be noticeable at the brake pedal.  
2 Remove front wheels.   AR40.10-S-1100E
3 Disconnect electrical connector (1). INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Ensure electrical line of electrical connection (1) is routed correctly.  
4 Remove cover caps from screws (2). INSTALLATION NOTES
Coat inner side of caps of screws/bolts (2) with assembly grease included in the repair kit.
The bolts (2) can otherwise corrode.
 
5 Remove lower screw (2) and swivel brake caliper (3) upwards. INSTALLATION NOTES
When swiveling the brake caliper (3) downward, do not damage the protective boot of the pilot bushing.
The pilot bushing can otherwise corrode.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace lower bolt (2).
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, floating brake caliper to floating caliper carrier

6 Remove brake linings (5) from brake caliper support (4). INSTALLATION NOTES
Do not apply any brake paste or assembly grease.
This can otherwise cause the brake system to malfunction.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Install outer right brake lining (5) with right front brake wear sensor (S10/2).
 
INSPECT Check     
7 Check brake linings (5) and brake disks for wear and damage.    
Notice  Notes on evaluating brake disks If wear or damage is present,

replace brake linings (5) or brake disks.

    Remove/install front axle brake disk AR42.10-S-0230E 
8 Check brake hoses for wear and damage. If wear or damage is present,

Replace appropriate brake hose.
Remove/install brake hoses at front axle
AR42.10-S-0024E 
9 Push back respective piston on brake caliper (3). NOTES
The dust boot must not protrude in this position. The dust boot can otherwise be damaged.
IMPORTANT If the brake fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir is too high, extract some brake fluid.
Commercially available devices/tools 
Extraction bellows
 
    SPECIAL TOOL Resetting device
If piston is sluggish or dust boot is damaged,

replace respective brake caliper (3).

    Remove/install front axle brake caliper AR42.10-S-0070E 
10 Remove brake lining retaining springs of brake linings (5) from brake caliper support (4). INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Always replace brake lining retaining springs.  
CLEAN Clean     
11 Clean contact surfaces of brake linings (5) on brake caliper support (4) and on brake caliper (3). SPECIAL TOOL Brake caliper brush Fig 1
12 Install in the reverse order.    
INSPECT Check     
13 Perform brake test on test stand.    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Brake test   AP42.00-S-4290E
