WARNING Risk of injury  caused by pinching or crushing when working on springs or spring bodies that are under tension Use only approved tensioning devices; additionally screen off hazardous area if necessary. Check special tools for damage and proper operation (visual inspection). Wear protective gloves. AS00.00-Z-0001-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Remove left rear or right rear wheel and tire assembly.   AR40.10-P-1102MFA
2 Remove rear axle carrier trim. Model 118, 177, 247 with engine 260
with code U55 (Multi-link axle)
except code M016 (Uprated engine)
except code U54 (Compound-link axle)
Model 118, 247 with engine 282, 608, 654 with code U55 (Multi-link axle)
except code U54 (Compound-link axle)
Model 177 with engine 282, 654 with code U55 (Multi-link axle)

3 Remove trim (5) from spring link (6).    
4 Unscrew screw (7) from holder (8) for rear left level sensor (B22/7) or rear right level sensor (B22/10) and remove holder (8) from spring link (6).    
5 Loosen nut (9). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking screw/nut, spring link to rear axle carrier *BA35.20-P-1001-01D 
6 Remove nut (10) from rear shock absorber. TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, shock absorber to rear axle/spring link *BA32.25-P-1001-03R 
7 Remove nut (11) from wheel carrier (12). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking nut, spring control arm to wheel carrier *BA35.20-P-1002-01D 
8 Clamp rear axle spring (1) and remove screw (13).   AR32.20-P-0202-06MFA 
    SPECIAL TOOL Tensioning device Fig 2
9 Remove screw (14). IMPORTANT Helper required.  
10 Swing spring link (6) together with rear axle spring (1) and tensioning device downward, release rear axle spring (1) and remove. IMPORTANT Helper required.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Ensure correct seating of the rear axle spring (1) and the spring retainer inserts (15).
 
    SPECIAL TOOL Tensioning device Fig 2
INSPECT Check     
11 Check rear axle spring (1) for paint damage. If the rear axle spring (1) is not replaced.
If paint damage is found,

Repair any paint damage using a black touch-up paint pen.
 
12 Check upper and lower spring retainer inserts (15); replace if necessary. If the rear axle spring (1) was replaced,

Always replace spring retainer inserts (15).
 
13 Install in the reverse order.    
  Concluding tasks     
14 Perform chassis alignment.   AR40.20-P-0200MFA
