Function requirements, general 

Internet connection, general 

The head unit controls the Internet connection. The Internet connection is established depending on the equipment involved over the HERMES control unit or the mobile phone system.

The following controls can be used for operation of the function:

IMPORTANT To ensure successful certificate exchange, the head unit synchronizes the date and time. For this, the head uses the received global navigation system (GPS) signals.

IMPORTANT Operation of all functions is described in the following using the Audio/COMAND control panel as an example.

The Internet connection function is divided into the following subfunctions:

Internet access (dial-in) via the HERMES control unit 

The function is activated by calling up the "System" menu on the Audio/COMAND display. It is also possible to directly access the browser using the "Back" button. The head unit generates the image data for display on the Audio/COMAND display and sends them over the HSVL line to the Audio/COMAND display.

The Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway is always used as the server for protected data traffic in order to connect to the Internet. This means that when surfing the net and using services, the user is only identifiable as a user of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway and cannot be located in the network. Data such as, e.g. updates of map data, Internet radio or data over the in-car hotspot is not routed over the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway.

The head unit transmits the data as follows to the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway:

IMPORTANT The HERMES control unit uses two antennas simultaneously for sending and receiving to form a transmission and reception diversity system.

The Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway exchanges data with the World Wide Web and the service providers over the Internet to match the requests from the head unit and sends the received data in the opposite direction to the head unit.

IMPORTANT Activating a manual or automatic emergency call, breakdown assistance or an MB info call can interrupt the Internet connection.

Depending on the equipment, one of the following components is used as a modem:

The function is activated by calling up the "System" menu on the Audio/COMAND display. It is also possible to directly access the browser using the "Back" button. The mobile telephone network provider must first be selected on the head unit for mobile phones that support the dial-up networking (DUP) profile. When using mobile phones that support the PAN profile, the dial-up data of the mobile telephone network provider entered into the mobile phone are used.

The mobile telephone network provider can either be selected from the country-specific lists or, if the mobile telephone network provider cannot be found in the list, added using "New Provider". Further access information is required (for example, on the tariff) that can be obtained from the mobile telephone network provider. As soon as the data is available, the connection to the Internet is set up.

If the telephone control unit is operated with its own SIM card, the telephone control unit accesses the mobile phone's SIM card over Bluetooth® using the SIM-Access profile.

IMPORTANT Fees: Internet access and services are free from Mercedes-Benz.

However, fees must be paid to the mobile telephone network provider in accordance with the respective mobile phone contract. Display options and the option of separating the connection via the "System" menu make cost management easier in time as well as data volume contracts.

Except code EG1 (Car telephony) and except code EH6 (Contactless charging system for mobile phones) 

Data are exchanged with the head unit over the Bluetooth® antenna.

The mobile phone sends the encrypted data to the mobile telephone network.

With code EG1 (Car telephony) 

The head unit sends the data over the WiFi antenna to the telephone control unit.

The telephone control unit transmits the data as follows to the mobile telephone network:

With code EH6 (Contactless charging system for mobile phones) 

The head unit sends the data via the Bluetooth® antenna to the mobile phone.

The mobile phone transmits the data as follows to the mobile telephone network:

IMPORTANT Multiple use of the mobile phone: Basically, several functions can be processed simultaneously by mobile phones suitable for Internet access, it is therefore possible, e.g. to make phone calls while connected to the Internet. However, this depends on the quality of the respective network. If the network connection is too weak, the Internet connection is merely maintained while the telephone call is being made.

Internet usage 

The Internet can be used in the vehicle in the following ways:

The services of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway are supplementary to the navigation system and can be used while driving. Free surfing is only possible if the vehicle is stationary. The instrument cluster transmits the vehicle speed via the interior CAN to the head unit.

To issue audio signals, the head unit actuates the speaker system directly or it sends corresponding signals over MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit (with code EU8 (Burmester 3D Surround Sound System)). Picture content (no flash) is shown on the Audio/COMAND display.

Use of Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway services (with code EK1 (HERMES - LTE communication module) or code EM2 (HERMES - UMTS communication module)) 

The function is activated by calling up the menu with the online services of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway on the Audio/COMAND display.

The individual services and the options for the services can now be actuated in the same way using the Audio/COMAND control panel. The method of operation and the screen displays have been adapted to the general operation of the head unit as have the design of the displays on the Audio/COMAND display so that operation is essentially intuitive.

The Audio/COMAND control panel sends the control signals via telematics CAN to the head unit. The head unit generates the image data for display on the Audio/COMAND display and sends them over the HSVL line to the Audio/COMAND display.

On vehicles except code ZU8 (National version for the USA) and except code ZJ1 (Version for Japan) Vodafone GmbH invoices the costs according to the amount of data consumed. If usage varies from month to month, costs must be settled by means of a data contract. If the monthly data volume is the same, e.g. downloading of map data, a simple contract is sufficient.

The following services can be used via the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway, for example:

Search for points of interest 

Search terms can be selected from lists or entered on the character bar on the audio/COMAND display. Points of interest can be searched for a search term at the current location, at the navigation destination or at an arbitrary location (free entry).

IMPORTANT The area that is being searched is defined under "Options".

The search results appear in the form of a list. If the list entry contains a telephone number, a telephone connection can be set up.

Search results can be stored in the address book or under "Personal POIs" on the SD (Secure Digital) card in the SD card slot of the multimedia connection unit.

A selected search result can be transferred to the navigation system, and in this case the head unit switches to the navigation menu.

Weather 

Weather information is displayed either as a weather data table or as a weather map.

In the basic setting the current weather data for the current location of the vehicle and forecasts for the next few hours are displayed.

However, different time periods and locations can be selected, such as information about the weather along the route or at the destination. In addition, city names or ZIP codes can be entered with the character bar on the audio/COMAND display. The most up-to-date measurements and forecasts are always displayed.

The topicality of the data depends on the relationship between the time of the query and the time of the last measurement.

IMPORTANT Weather data is sent from the weather station nearest to the entered location. It can take a while to transfer and display the respective data, particularly if maps are being displayed or with a weak network connection.

Additional function requirements for loading POIs or routes (with code EK1 (HERMES - LTE communication module) or code EM2 (HERMES - UMTS communication module)) 

IMPORTANT Special destinations or routes that have been sent to the vehicle over the Internet (e.g. via Google Maps) are also sent to the vehicle by way of the Service Center.

Points of interest or routes (with code EK1 (HERMES - LTE communication module) or code EM2 (HERMES - UMTS communication module)) 

The Service Center transfers points of interest or routes via the mobile telephone network via the following route:

If circuit 15 is OFF, the HERMES control unit stores the data in an integrated buffer.

IMPORTANT Vehicles with code ZU8 (National version for the USA)

A maximum of 100 points of interest and 30 routes, each with up to 255 route points can be stored. If the capacity of the buffer is exceeded, the oldest POIs or routes are overwritten.

IMPORTANT Vehicles except code ZU8 (National version for the USA)

The capacity of the buffer is restricted to 20 routes and 50 points of interest. If more POIs and routes are sent than can be stored in the clipboard, the oldest POIs and routes are overwritten.

IMPORTANT Due to the limited capacity of the buffer, transmitted POIs/routes are available for downloading only for a limited period of time (approx. 7 days), and only a limited number of POIs/routes can be made available for download within the same time period.

At circuit 15 ON, the HERMES control unit send the points of interest or routes over the diagnostic CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and the user interface CAN to the head unit, when it is switched on.

The reception of information is displayed by the head unit by means of a pop-up window on the Audio/COMAND display.

IMPORTANT Navigation data can be sent by the Service Center as part of an emergency call, breakdown assistance or an MB Info call.

Additional function requirements for loading POIs or routes (except code EK1 (HERMES - LTE communication module) and code EM2 (HERMES - UMTS communication module)) 

Points of interest or routes (except code EK1 (HERMES - LTE communication module) and except code EM2 (HERMES - UMTS communication module)) 

POIs that have been found on the Internet via Google Maps or routes that have been planned using Google Maps can be transmitted to the vehicle using the "Transmit to car" function on the Google Maps web pages.

Depending on the equipment installed, the points of interest or routes are received via the mobile telephone network via the following routes:

The head unit receives the points of interest or routes over the Bluetooth® antenna from the mobile phone.

IMPORTANT The capacity of the buffer is restricted to 20 routes and 50 points of interest. If more POIs and routes are sent than can be stored in the clipboard, the oldest POIs and routes are overwritten.

IMPORTANT Due to the limited capacity of the buffer, transmitted POIs/routes are available for downloading only for a limited period of time (approx. 7 days), and only a limited number of POIs/routes can be made available for download within the same time period.

IMPORTANT If the POI or route is only currently needed and not permanently, the route guidance can be started directly over the "Navigate" menu entry without the POI or route being stored permanently.

IMPORTANT Points of interests can be loaded, but only a few routes.

Additional function requirements for free surfing 

Unrestricted surfing 

In order to connect to the Internet, either a URL must be entered in the browser or a page that is stored under "Favorites" must be selected. After opening the browser, the website last visited is loaded.

To navigate on the page, you can either move the cursor as though you were using a mouse or, on the current page, jump from one selectable object (e.g. link) to the next (the object is highlighted here).

When jumping to a text entry field, the character toolbar on the audio/COMAND display can be used to enter text.

Surfing with the mobile browser is subject to the following technical restrictions:

IMPORTANT The Internet browser can play Flash, but cannot display any Flash videos.

Additional function requirements: in-car hotspot 

In-car hotspot 

The In-Car Hotspot function allows users in the vehicle to use the Internet wirelessly on mobile terminals; this is implemented via the head unit. The head unit acts as a Wireless Access Point (WAP) to exchange data over the WiFi antenna with mobile terminals and routes the signals to the Internet.

To connect the mobile terminal, the user must search for networks (Wireless Local Area Network) on the mobile terminal and select the head unit network.

IMPORTANT Several devices can be connected simultaneously.
