TV mode, general
The TV tuner control unit enables the reception of digital television programs. The program contents are shown in the audio/COMAND display.
The head unit can be switched ON using the "ON" button in the lower control panel at the right. The lower control panel at the right sends the status of the volume control button to the head unit over thew UBF-LIN, Audio/COMAND control panel and the telematics CAN.
Vehicles except code ZJ1 (Version for Japan)
The tv programs are broadcast using the Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial standard (DVB-T/DTV-T2) in the 470 to 710 MHz range. Along with the video compression standard MPEG 2, MPEG 4 and MPEG-H (+ H.265) are also supported. Encrypted programs can also be received with the aid of a Common Interface Plus (CI+) module. New services will be available in future in the frequency ranges 90 to 108 MHz and 170 to 222 MHz.
The TV tuner control unit currently has the following functionalities:
- Video text (pages: 100 to 899)
- Station list of channels currently receivable
- Last settings
- National settings
- Info (information on currently selected stations)
Video text function: Some stations, primarily in central Europe, also offer video text along with your TV programs. To this end, the TV tuner control unit is equipped with a separate video text decoder. Only video text broadcast with Latin ASCII characters are supported, i.e. Greek or Cyrillic characters are not supported.

With digital TV reception the "one-segment" substandard (TV standard for mobile telephony) is also supported in addition to the "full-segment" substandard.
The TV tuner control unit has the following functionalities:
- Digital image storage
- Last settings
- Broadcast Markup Language (BML): The TV tuner control unit supports video text for all the available Japanese TV stations. This enables information to be shown similar to a small website on weather, news, etc. By selecting a region in the setting list you can receive region-specific information.
- Electronic Program Guide (EPG): The EPG shows information such as the start and end of broadcasts along with detailed information on the television program for each TV station.
- Bilingual: Two languages are supported depending on station availability, e.g. Japanese on the main sound track and English on the sub sound track.
The TV functions can be operated using the following controls:
- Head unit multifunction steering wheel button group
The TV functions can be operated using the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group. The volume can be adjusted using the volume control switch in the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group.
The steering wheel electronics reads the control signals directly.
The steering wheel electronics send the control signals over the steering wheel CAN to the steering column tube module control unit and from there over the suspension FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and the user interface CAN to the head unit.
- Audio/COMAND control panel
The TV functions can be operated using the audio/COMAND controller and the "Back" button on the Audio/COMAND control panel.
The Audio/COMAND control panel sends the control signals via telematics CAN to the head unit.
- Touchpad
The touchpad can be used to operate the tv functions. The touchpad sends the operation signals over the telematics CAN to the head unit.
- Upper control panel control unit, lower control panel at right
The TV functions can be activated on the upper control panel control unit. The volume can be adjusted using the volume control button on the lower control panel at the right. The upper control panel control unit and the lower control panel at the right send the operation signals over the LCP-LIN, Audio/COMAND control panel and the telematics CAN to the head unit.
The TV tuner control unit splits up the video and audio signals that are contained in the TV signals.
The TV mode function comprises the following subfunctions:
- Receipt of TV signals
- Output of video signals
- Audio signal output
Receipt of TV signals
TV-1 signals are received over the right rear side window pane antenna and forwarded over the TV 1 antenna amplifier to the TV tuner control unit.
TV-2 signals are received by the right rear side window pane antenna over the FM 2, DAB 2, TV 2 antenna amplifier and the TV tuner control unit.
TV-3 signals are received by the left rear side window pane antenna and forwarded over the TV 3 antenna amplifier to the TV tuner control unit.
The TV tuner control unit processes the TV signals and separates the video signals from the audio signals.
Output of video signals
The TV program contents are shown in the audio/COMAND display.
The TV tuner control unit sends the video signals over MOST, head unit and the HSVL line to the audio/COMAND display.
Audio signal output
The audio signals are output via the speaker system. The TV tuner control unit sends the audio signals over MOST to the head unit. The head unit amplifies the audio signals and emits them in vehicles except code EU8 (Burmester 3D Surround Sound System) directly through the speaker system.
In vehicles with code EU8 (Burmester 3D sound system), the TV tuner control unit sends the audio signals over MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, which amplifies the audio signals and emits them through the speaker system.
