Audio/COMAND, general
On model 463 with code EU4 (COMAND Online), the COMAND controller unit (A40/3) is the central control unit for the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle. On model 463.342 with code EF8 (Radio with Bluetooth) or code EF9 (Radio with Bluetooth and Navigation), the radio (A2) is the control unit for the entertainment and communications systems integrated in the vehicle. A distinction is made between the following aspects:
- Audio/COMAND on model 463 with code EU4 (COMAND Online)
- Audio/COMAND on model 463.342 with code EF8 (Radio with Bluetooth) or code EF9 (Radio with Bluetooth and navigation)
- Equipment variants
Audio/COMAND on model 463 with code EU4 (COMAND Online)
The COMAND controller unit functions as a gateway; it routes the signals from the interior CAN (CAN B) to the components of the telematics CAN (CAN A) and the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) and thereby forms the communications interface.
The COMAND controller unit communicates with the following control units via MOST:
- Tuner unit (A90/4) (with code EF6 (Digital radio (DAB)), with code ZU8 (USA national version) or with code EM8 (TV tuner))
- Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with code EU9 (Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system))
All displays and menu representations for the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) are generated by the COMAND controller unit when a smartphone is not integrated.
Some applications can also be shown in the instrument cluster, e.g.: audio, telephone, navigation.
The COMAND controller unit comprises the following subfunctions, which are described in separate documents:

The COMAND controller unit supports the following subfunctions, which are described in separate documents:

The COMAND controller unit supports the following function that is described below:

Integration of smartphones
The COMAND controller unit allows for the integration of Smartphones. In order to ensure that the content is prepared in a vehicle-compatible way, only smartphone applications (apps) that have been developed for the following integration standards are supported:
- Android Auto (Google)
- CarPlay (Apple)
In order to be able to use the smartphone apps, the smartphone must be connected to USB connector 2 (A90/5x2) of the multimedia connection unit (A90/5) and the integration standard selected over the telephone menu. If automatic connection has been selected under "Options" in the telephone menu, activation via the menu is not possible.
With the Android Auto integration standard, a Bluetooth® connection between the smartphone and the COMAND controller unit is required as well as the connection via USB (Universal Serial Bus) (the connection is established automatically).
If a smartphone is connected and the Android Auto or CarPlay integration standard is activated, the COMAND controller unit is switched to a special operating mode ("integration mode") in which not all functions of the COMAND controller unit can be used. The following functions of the COMAND controller unit are not available if Android Auto or CarPlay is activated:
- Media player
- Navigation mode
- Voice control system
- Telephony (with CarPlay)
The radio (AM and FM) functions, vehicle settings and safety-relevant functions such as, e.g. the emergency call function, (with code EK1 (HERMES - LTE communications module) or with code EM2 (HERMES - UMTS communications module)), can still be used.
With Android Auto, the following usage restrictions apply for the telephony: Calls can only be made through the connected smartphone. Telephony with code EG1 (Auto telephony) is not possible.
If an integration standard is activated, the COMAND controller unit supports the smartphone applications as follows:
- Volume adaptation for all audio signals
- Forwarding of control signals (e.g. from buttons on the COMAND controller unit, from the Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9), long press of the voice control system on button (S111s4), pressing the accept/terminate phone call button (S111s3) of the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111))
- Forwarding of signals from the hands-free system microphone (e.A67b1) g. for voice control or telephony)
- Audio output (e.g. for voice control or telephony) over the speaker system or forwarding of the signals to the sound system amplifier control unit (with code EU9 (Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system))
- Muting of the radio reception in the COMAND controller unit (mute function), e.g. for smartphone telephony
- Forwarding of position data (e.g. GPS signals (global navigation system), gyro sensor signals, wheel speed signals)
- Forwarding of video signals generated by the smartphone to the Audio/COMAND display
- Forwarding of status information for displaying in the instrument cluster (A1)
The smartphone applications themselves are not shown in the instrument cluster.
If the smartphone is used for calling, the COMAND controller unit sends and receives telephone signals from and to the smartphone with Android Auto over the Bluetooth® antenna (A2/91), with CarPlay over the USB connection (Universal Serial Bus) to the multimedia connection unit.
