The Dedicated Short-Range Communications system combines the following functions:

The services provided through the VICS include e. g.:

Function sequence for Dedicated Short-Range Communications

The DSRC antenna (A2/94) and the DSRC control unit (A50/3) are installed in the vehicle for transmitting and receiving data. The DSRC control communicates with the toll clearing station via the DSRC antenna and receives the VICS information in the 5.8 GHz range.

IMPORTANT A special ETC card is required for the ETC system which has to be inserted into the DSRC control unit. All information concerning the user and the fees that have already been paid are stored on this card.

At vehicle side, the DSRC control unit is connected to the COMAND controller unit (A40/3). The COMAND controller unit transmits display messages as part of DSRC via an LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signal) line to the Audio/COMAND Display (A40/8).

On vehicles except code EU9 (Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system), the COMAND controller unit outputs voice messages over the vehicle's speaker system. On vehicles with code EU9 (Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system), the COMAND controller unit forwards the voice messages via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, which actuates the speaker system.

In the following cases, an ETC voice message is output via the speaker system and also appears on the Audio/COMAND display:

In the following cases, the LED shows an error on the Dedicated Short-Range Communications control unit (LED flashes red):

IMPORTANT If an ETC card is inserted and the Dedicated Short-Range Communications control unit does not recognize an error, the LED is lit in green.
