Voice control, general
Many driver information system functions can be called up and operated via the voice control system (VCS [SBS]). The VCS [SBS] is integrated into the COMAND controller unit (A40/3). The system can be controlled by voice by spelling out or entering complete words.
The voice control can be activated or deactivated using the following buttons on the multifunction steering wheel (MFL):
- Voice control system ON button (S111s4)
- "Back" and voice control system OFF button (S110s4)
The control signal for the voice control system ON button or the "Back" button and voice control system OFF button is forwarded as follows:
Steering wheel electronics (N135) →

Steering column tube module control unit (N80) →
Chassis CAN 1 (CAN E1) →
Electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) →

COMAND control unit
Voice input takes place via the relevant hands-free system microphone (A67b1), which is connected to the COMAND controller unit over a direct line. The words spoken into the hands-free system microphone are converted into an electrical signal and forwarded to the COMAND controller unit.
If the voice command is not clearly identified, a query is made by the voice control system. The audio signals are generated by the COMAND controller unit and emitted over the speaker system, on vehicles with code EU9 (Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system) over Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) and the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3).
