Audio/COMAND, general
The COMAND controller unit (A40/3) is the central control for the entertainment and communication systems integrated in the vehicle. On vehicles except code ZJ1 (Version for Japan) the CD/DVD drive of the COMAND controller unit is designed to be a changer, i.e. you can choose from up to six CDs or DVDs.
The COMAND controller unit contains the following subfunctions, which are described in separate documents:
- Audio mode function
- Video mode function
- Internet connection function
- Navigation mode function
- Mobile phone system function
- Voice control, function
- TV mode, function (with code EM8 (TV tuner) or with code ZJ1 (Version for Japan))
- Media Interface, function (with code EH3 (Media Interface))
- Dedicated Short-Range Communications, function (with code ZJ1 (Version for Japan), Dealer Option)
- Disk changer, function (except code ZJ1 (Version for Japan))
- Emergency call system, function (with code ZU8 (USA national version) or except code ZJ1 (Version for Japan) and except code ZU8 (USA national version))
The displays and menu presentations for the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) are generated in the COMAND controller unit.
The following applications can also be shown in the instrument cluster (A1): Audio, telephone and navigation.
The COMAND controller unit acts as a gateway. It routes the signals from the interior CAN (CAN B) to the components of the telematics CAN (CAN A) and the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) and thereby forms the communications interface.
The COMAND controller unit communicates with the following control units via MOST:
- Digital TV tuner (A90/3) (with code EM8 (TV tuner) or with code ZJ1 (Version for Japan))
- Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with code EU9 (Harman Kardon® Logic 7® surround sound system))
- Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3) (with code EF6 (Digital radio (DAB)))
- Satellite Digital Audio Radio (SDAR) control unit (N87/5) (with code ZU8 (USA national version))
- Media interface control unit (N125/1) (with code EH3 (Media Interface))
