Location
The mono multifunction camera and the stereo multifunction camera are each located behind a panel at the top center of the windshield.
Tasks
Mono multifunction camera:
The mono multifunction camera records information on the surroundings in the area to the front of the vehicle, e.g. ambient brightness, objects or traffic signs. These are evaluated by the integrated control unit, and used for implementing various functions.
Stereo multifunction camera:
The stereo multifunction camera consists of two high-resolution camera heads that are mounted at a distance of approx. s = 20 cm in a housing. While the mono multifunction camera only estimates the distances to objects, the stereo multifunction camera can measure the distance to an object and its height above the road. This is made possible by the differences in perspective between the left and the right optical path. The electronic analysis system in the stereo multifunction camera uses the same effect that enables people to have stereoscopic vision, i.e. the parallax shift between two images. At an average distance of s = 20 to 30 m, the stereo malfunction camera can determine the exact distance to the object down to s = 20 to 30 cm. This high resolution is also available under more difficult conditions such as when multiple objects are situated very close to each other, when objects are partially concealed or when there is a low contrast between the object and the background. The electronic analysis system of the stereo multifunction camera is also able to differentiate between shadow and road markings and real objects. As well as the spatial position of a detected object, the stereo multifunction camera also supplies additional critical information: A direction of motion along the horizontal, vertical and longitudinal axis can be determined for each pixel of a detected object. This then clearly shows whether an object is moving and if so, where to. In combination with object classification (e.g. pedestrian) based on common features, it is possible to achieve a high degree of decision-making reliability. For example, the exact impact location for a collision can be calculated which in turn enables the time remaining until the point of impact to be used to maximum effect for safety precautions. The stereo multifunction camera supports this process over the entire vehicle speed range.
This results in the following tasks:
- Reading in of signals
- Evaluation of input factors
- Controlling functions
- Actuation of components
- Transmission of signals and requests
Reading in of signals
The input factors are read in via the following connection:
- Periphery CAN (CAN PER) (mono multifunction camera)
- Chassis FlexRay (Flex E) (Stereo multifunction camera)
Periphery CAN (mono multifunction camera)
The mono multifunction camera also reads in the following signals over the periphery CAN:
- Circuit 15 status
- Engine running or drive train operational
- Wheel speed
- Vehicle speed
- Vehicle lateral and longitudinal acceleration
- Information indicating driver activity, such as turn signaling, accelerating, braking, steering
- Information indicating possible distraction of the driver, such as operation of the audio system, various comfort functions (interior illumination, steering column adjustment) and various menu levels in the instrument cluster (A1) and in the head unit (A26/17)
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Chassis FlexRay (Stereo multifunction camera)
The stereo multifunction camera also reads in the following signals over the chassis FlexRay:
- Circuit 15 status
- Engine running or drive train operational
- Wheel speed
- Vehicle speed
- Vehicle lateral and longitudinal acceleration
- Information on brake control system activities
- Information indicating driver activity, such as turn signaling, accelerating, braking, steering
- Information indicating possible distraction of the driver, such as operation of the audio system, various comfort functions (interior illumination, steering column adjustment) and various menu levels in the instrument cluster and in the head unit
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Evaluation of input factors
The input factors are evaluated by the microprocessor and the corresponding components are actuated.
Controlling functions
The mono multifunction camera controls the following functions:
- Lane Keeping Assist (with CODE 22P (Lane package))
- Traffic Sign Assist (with CODE 513 (Traffic Sign Assist))
- High beams assistant (with code P35 (Light package))
The stereo multifunction camera controls the following functions:
- Traffic Sign Assist (with CODE 513 (Traffic Sign Assist))
- High beams assistant (with code P35 (Light package))
- Active driver assistance systems:
- Active Lane Keeping Assist (with CODE 23P (Driving assistance package))
- DISTRONIC distance pilot (with code 239 (DISTRONIC distance pilot) or code 23P (Driving assistance package))
- Steering pilot (with code 23P (Driving assistance package))
- Evasive Steering Assist (with code 23P (Driving assistance package))
- Active Brake Assist with intersection function (with code 23P (Driving assistance package))
Model 238
up to Model year 2021
with code P35 (Light Package)
The respective multifunction camera evaluates light sources in front of the vehicle. In the stereo multifunction camera, evaluation takes place via the right camera head.
Actuation of components
To avoid any fogging in the multifunction camera's field of view the front window is heated in this area by the auxiliary heater heating element (R50). The auxiliary heater heating element is directly actuated by the multifunction camera.
Transmission of signals and requests
The multifunction camera sends status information and requirements over the following connection:
- Periphery CAN (mono multifunction camera)
- Chassis FlexRay (Stereo multifunction camera)
Periphery CAN (mono multifunction camera)
The mono multifunction camera also sends the following signals and requests:
- Ambient brightness
- Actuate steering wheel vibration motor (M99) (with CODE 22P (Lane package))
- Actuate high beams assistant and perform optical headlamp range adjustment (with code P35 (Light package))
- Display traffic sign (with CODE 513 (Traffic Sign Assist))
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Chassis FlexRay (Stereo multifunction camera)
The stereo multifunction camera also sends the following signals and requests:
- Ambient brightness
- Actuate steering wheel vibration motor (M99) (with CODE 22P (Lane package))
- Actuate high beams assistant and perform optical headlamp range adjustment (with code P35 (Light package))
- Display traffic sign (with CODE 513 (Traffic Sign Assist))
- Lane data
- Object data (object size, object type, object direction of motion, distance) (with CODE 23P (Driving assistance package))
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Structure
The multifunction camera consists of the following main components:
- Camera head (mono multifunction camera)
- Left and right camera head (stereo multifunction camera)
- Electronic analysis system (control unit)
- Auxiliary heater heating element
After replacement of a multifunction camera or the windshield the multifunction camera has to be recalibrated.
