Remove/Install Valve Springs - AR05.30-P-3021MSA

Engine 256.9 in model 213, 238, 257, 290

CAUTION Risk of injury  to skin and eyes due to handling of engine oil. Risk of poisoning  caused by swallowing engine oil Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.
Do not fill engine oil into beverage containers.

CAUTION Risk of injury  caused by scraping or cutting body parts on sharp vehicle parts Always wear protective gloves when working on or near sharp and non-deburred vehicle parts.
Deburr repair panels.

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Remove cylinder head (1).   AR01.30-P-5800MSA
2 Remove hydraulic valve play compensation elements.   AR05.00-P-2013MSA 
3 Attach cylinder head (1) to assembly device (01). NOTES
Before commissioning, ensure that the counterholders (02) for the SPECIAL TOOL assembly device (01) are seated correctly on the cylinder head (1).
The cylinder head (1) will otherwise be damaged.
IMPORTANT Observe operator's manual provided by the manufacturer of the SPECIAL TOOL assembly device (01).

4 Attach assembly lever (03) with depressor (04) to sliding piece (05), place depressor (04) on top valve spring retainer (2) vertically, and align sliding piece (05). SPECIAL TOOL Valve assembly tools kit Fig 4

5 Move air suspension bellows of the assembly device (01) with a lever (06) until they stand centrally over the combustion chamber of the respective valves (6). NOTES
Ensure that the air suspension bellows of the SPECIAL TOOL assembly device (01) press centrally into the combustion chamber.
The valves (6) will otherwise be damaged.
IMPORTANT Observe operator's manual provided by the manufacturer of the SPECIAL TOOL assembly device (01).

6 Connect compressed air to assembly device (01) and open compressed air valve. IMPORTANT Observe operator's manual provided by the manufacturer of the SPECIAL TOOL assembly device (01).

7 Press valve spring (3) together with the assembly lever (03) and remove valve keepers (4) with magnetic pin. INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Ensure valve keepers (4) are seated correctly.

8 Loosen assembly lever (03) and relieve valve spring (3). SPECIAL TOOL Valve assembly tools kit Fig 4
9 Remove top valve spring retainer (2) and valve spring (3).    
INSPECT Check     
10 Check valve spring (3) for damage. If damage is present, ↓
Replace all valve springs (3).
 
11 Check top valve spring retainer (2) and bottom valve spring retainer (7) for score marks, cracks, and pitting. If damage is present, ↓
Replace top and bottom valve spring retainer (2, 7).
 
12 Check valve stems for formation of burrs and pitting. If ridging is available, ↓
Deburr valve stems.
If pitting is present, ↓
Install new valves (6).

13 Install in the reverse order.
