General
The brake denotes the entirety of all brake systems installed on a vehicle, and its purpose is as follows:
- Maintain or reduce speed.
- Bring vehicle to a standstill.
- Keep vehicle stationary.
Function
Service brakes
The service brake is an assembly of the brake system used to reduce the speed of the vehicle (until stationary if necessary). The driver doses the braking effect of the service brake via the brake pedal. The service brake acts on all wheels of the vehicle.
Parking brake
The parking brake secures a stationary or parked-up vehicle against rolling away, even on inclined roadways. Unlike the service brake, the parking brake acts on the brake system of one axle. Usually the rear axle. Activation takes place manually via the electric parking brake switch or automatically depending on the driving condition.
Brake and traction system
The brake and traction system (e.g. ARS) assists the driver in suddenly occurring dangerous situations or in critical driving situations, and thus ensures active safety. It includes various subsystems that have a checking, optimizing or regulating function.
