Internet connection, general
The following controls can be used for operation of the function:
- Audio/COMAND control panel
- Right multifunction steering wheel button group
- "ON" button on audio equipment
The audio equipment receives the signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel via telematics CAN.

The Internet connection function is divided into the following subfunctions:
- Internet access (dial-up) in vehicles with code 494 (USA version)
- Internet access (dial-up) in vehicles except code 494 (USA version)
- Internet usage
Additional function requirements for Internet access (dial-up) in vehicles with code 494 (USA version)
- The "Internet access" service is authorized and the authorized communications module of the HERMES control unit is configured with the telephone number of the service provider in question.
- The vehicle owner is registered and authorized at the Service Center.
- No prioritized service (emergency call (manual or automatic), MB information call, breakdown assistance) is activated.
Internet access (dial-up) in vehicles with code 494 (USA version)
The function is activated by calling up the menu, e.g. via the application bar on the Audio/COMAND display. The selection is confirmed e.g. by pressing the Audio/COMAND controller on the Audio/COMAND control panel.
The signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are received by the audio equipment via telematics CAN, processed and shown on the Audio/COMAND display via an LVDS line.
The Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway is generally used as the server for the connection to the Internet. Through the encrypted connection to the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway, the user is only generally identifiable as a user of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway when surfing and using services and cannot be located in the network via his/her activities.
If the COMAND controller unit is used as a hotspot or if the IP-Radio service is activated, the data traffic is not processed via the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway.
The audio equipment sends data into the mobile telephone network via the following route:
WLAN antenna (with code 531 (COMAND APS)) or Bluetooth® antenna (except code 531 (COMAND APS)) →

Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway
The HERMES control unit uses the multifunction antenna and the emergency call system antenna to send and receive at the same time, i.e. both antennas constitute transmission and reception diversity.
According to the requests from the audio equipment, the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway exchanges data with the World Wide Web and the service providers via the Internet and sends the received data in the opposite direction to the audio equipment.
Activating a manual or automatic emergency call, breakdown assistance or an MB information call interrupts the Internet connection.
Additional function requirements for Internet access (dial-up) in vehicles except code 494 (USA version)
- No Smartphone is connected via the standard CarPlay
- The mobile telephone network provider allows the mobile phone to be used for data services.
- Basic telephony and comfort telephony (with code 386 (Comfort telephony)):
- A mobile phone is connected to the audio equipment via Bluetooth® and supports the Bluetooth® profile Personal Area Network (PAN) or Dial-up Networking (DUN).
- Telephony with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)):
- A telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is plugged into the mobile phone contact plate and connected to the audio equipment.
- If connecting to audio equipment via Bluetooth®: No Smartphone is connected to the multimedia connection unit via the Android Auto standard.
Internet access (dial-up) in vehicles except code 494 (USA version)
The function is activated by calling up the menu, e.g. via the application bar on the Audio/COMAND display.
With a connection via Personal Area Network (PAN), the Internet enable function must be activated on the mobile phone.
With a connection via Dial-up Networking (DUN), the dial-in data must be provided via the audio equipment. By turning the Audio/COMAND controller, the "System" panel is shown in the foreground on the Audio/COMAND display. After selection or addition of the mobile telephone network provider, further access information (e.g. on the tariff) must be specified that can be obtained from the mobile telephone network provider. As soon as the data is available, the connection to the Internet is set up.
The signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are received by the audio equipment via telematics CAN, processed and shown on the Audio/COMAND display via an LVDS line.
Fees: Internet access and services are free from Mercedes-Benz. However, fees must be paid to the mobile telephone network provider in accordance with the respective mobile phone contract. Display options and the "Scissors (disconnect connection)" soft key in the function bar make it easier to manage costs with either a time or data volume contract.
The Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway is generally used as the server for the connection to the Internet. Through the encrypted connection to the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway, the user is only generally identifiable as a user of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway when surfing and using services and cannot be located in the network via his/her activities.
The data traffic of the IP-Radio service is not processed over the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway.
In vehicles except code 386 (Comfort telephony) and except code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)) and with basic telephony, the audio equipment transmits the signals via the Bluetooth® antenna to the mobile phone, which establishes the connection to the mobile telephone network.
On vehicles with code 386 (Comfort telephony), the audio equipment sends the signals into the mobile telephone network via the following route when comfort telephony is used:

Multifunction antenna
On vehicles with code 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)), data can be transferred from the audio equipment to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) via two different routes. We recommend connecting the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP) via the integrated USB interface (Universal Serial Bus) and a connecting cable to the multimedia connection unit, as a higher data rate is hereby achieved. In this case, the audio equipment transfers the data via the following route:

Telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile)
If the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is not connected to the multimedia connection unit, it receives the data from the audio equipment via the Bluetooth® antenna. The application quality is restricted by the low data rate when connected by Bluetooth®.
The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) sends the data via the following route into the mobile telephone network:

According to the requests from the audio equipment, the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway exchanges data with the World Wide Web and the service providers via the Internet and sends the received data in the opposite direction to the audio equipment.

It is also possible to set up the Internet connection via basic telephony (as in vehicles without the special equipment).
Multiple use of mobile phone: Basically, several functions can be processed at the same time via mobile phones that are suitable for the Internet connection function, i.e. it is possible to make phone calls while connected to the Internet. However, this depends on the quality of the respective network. If the network connection is too weak, the Internet connection is merely maintained while the telephone call is being made.
Internet usage
The Internet can be used in the vehicle in the following ways:
- Use of Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway services
- Unrestricted surfing
The services of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway are supplementary to the navigation system and can be used while driving. Free surfing is only possible if the vehicle is stationary. The audio equipment receives the speed signal from the instrument cluster via interior CAN.
Audio signals from the Internet can also be played back. The audio equipment emits the audio signals from the Internet via the speaker system or sends them via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit in vehicles with code 810 (Sound system).
If, for a specific period of time, no control signals are activated for the Internet function, the audio equipment automatically disconnects the Internet connection. If necessary the Internet connection is automatically set up again.

The time period for automatic disconnection can be defined on the "System" panel.
Use of Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway services
By turning the Audio/COMAND controller, the panel for the services is shown in the foreground on the Audio/COMAND display. The selection is confirmed by pressing the Audio/COMAND controller on the Audio/COMAND control panel. The individual services and the options for the services can now be actuated in the same way using the Audio/COMAND control panel. The method of operation and the screen displays have been adapted to the general operation of the audio equipment as have the design of the displays on the Audio/COMAND display so that operation is essentially intuitive.
The signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are received by the audio equipment via telematics CAN, processed and shown on the Audio/COMAND display via an LVDS line.
The following services can be used via the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway (examples):
- Search for points of interest
- Weather
- Load points of interest or routes (with code 494 (USA version))
- Load points of interest or routes (except code 494 (USA version))
Other services are possible, but they are not described in detail here.
Search for points of interest
Search term can be selected from list or entered on the character bar on the audio/COMAND display. Points of interest can be searched for a search term, e.g. at the current location, at the navigation destination or at an arbitrary location (free entry).
The area that is being searched is defined under "Options".
The search results appear in the form of a list. If the list entry contains a telephone number, a telephone connection can be set up.
Search results can be stored in the address book or under "Personal points of interest" on an SD card (Secure Digital) in the SD card slot of the audio equipment (except code 505 (Radio 20 NTG5 non-navigation capable)). A selected search result can be transferred to the navigation system, and in this case the audio equipment switches to the navigation menu.
Weather
Weather information is displayed either as a weather data table or as a weather map.
In the basic setting the current weather data for the current location of the vehicle and forecasts for the next few hours are displayed.
However, different time periods and locations can be selected, such as information about the weather along the route or at the destination. In addition city names or ZIP codes can be entered with the character bar on the audio/COMAND display. The most up-to-date measurements and forecasts are always displayed.
The topicality of the data depends on the relationship between the time of the query and the time of the last measurement.
Weather data is sent from the weather station nearest to the entered location. It can take a while to transfer and display the respective data, particularly if maps are being displayed or with a weak network connection.

- An SD card is located in the SD card slot of the audio equipment.
- A POI or route has been sent to the vehicle by the Service Center.
POIs or routes that have been sent to the vehicle via the Internet (e.g. via Google Maps) are also transmitted to the vehicle via the Service Center.
Load points of interest or routes (with code 494 (USA version))
The HERMES control unit receives the POIs or routes via the multifunction antenna or the emergency call system antenna. If circuit 15 is OFF, the HERMES control unit stores the data in an integrated buffer.
If the capacity of the buffer is exceeded, the oldest POIs or routes are overwritten.
If circuit 15 is ON, the HERMES control unit transmits the points of interest or routes via the following route as soon as the audio equipment is switched on:

Audio equipment
The reception of information is displayed by the audio equipment by means of a pop-up window on the Audio/COMAND display.
Using the context menu, the points of interest or routes are copied from the buffer into the navigation system or the address book of the audio equipment. Only then are the POIs and routes transmitted to the vehicle permanently available in the vehicle.
Navigation data can be sent by the Service Center as part of an emergency call, breakdown assistance or an MB Info call.
Because of the limited capacity of the buffer, transmitted POIs and routes are only available for loading for a limited time period (approx. 7 days), and only a limited number of POIs and routes can be made available for loading within the same time period.
If the point of interest or route is only needed immediately and not permanently, the navigation can be started directly without the point of interest or route being stored permanently. This function is also available without an SD card.

- An SD card is located in the SD card slot of the audio equipment (with code 522 (Audio 20 radio) or with code 531 (COMAND APS)).
- A POI or route has been sent to the vehicle using Google Maps.
Points of interest that have been found on the Internet via Google Maps or routes that have been planned using Google Maps can be transmitted via Google Maps to the vehicle.
Load points of interest or routes (except code 494 (USA version))
The "Load points of interest and routes" service lists the points of interest and routes that have been sent to the vehicle and makes it possible to transfer them from the buffer to the navigation system or the address book of the audio equipment using the context menu. The points of interest and routes that have been transmitted via Google Maps are only continuously available in the vehicle if they have been transferred to the navigation system or the address book of the audio equipment using the "Load points of interest and routes" service.
If the POI or route is only needed immediately and not permanently, the navigation can be started directly via the "Navigate" menu entry without the POI or route being stored permanently. This function is also available without an SD card.
If more POIs and routes are sent than can be stored in the clipboard, the oldest POIs and routes are overwritten.

Points of interests can be loaded but no routes. The POIs must always be taken from the COMAND controller unit address book and selected from there as the navigation destination.

In order to connect to the Internet, either a URL must be entered or a page that is stored under "Favorites" must be selected.
In order to navigate on the page, you can either move the cursor using the Audio/COMAND controller of the Audio/COMAND control panel as though you were using a mouse, or jump from one selectable object (e.g. link) to the next on the current page by turning the Audio/COMAND controller (this highlights the object). A marked link is opened by pressing the Audio/COMAND controller of the Audio/COMAND control panel vertically downwards. The "back" button opens the context menu. When jumping to a text entry field, the character toolbar on the Audio/COMAND display can be used to enter text.
Surfing with the mobile browser is subject to the following technical restrictions:
- Playback of videos (HTML5) on vehicles with code 531 (COMAND APS)
