Function requirements for video operation in general

Video mode, general

The DVD drive of the COMAND controller unit or Rear Seat Entertainment System controller unit (with code 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment System)) supports playback of video DVDs. The video image is shown on the Audio/COMAND display, the left rear display or the right rear display depending on the request and the availability. The functional scope is equipment dependent, therefore video operation is divided up into the following subfunctions:

Function sequence, video operation of COMAND controller unit

The video function can be operated using the:

The Audio/COMAND control panel sends the control signals over the telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit.

The control signals of the left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right multifunction steering wheel button group are forwarded as follows:

Steering wheel electronics →

Steering LIN →

Steering column tube module control unit →

Chassis FlexRay →

Electronic ignition lock control unit →

User interface CAN →

Instrument cluster →

User interface CAN →

COMAND control unit

The voice commands for the voice control system are converted into electrical signals by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded to the COMAND controller unit.

The Kleer® radio signals from the remote control (with code 816 (Entertainment remote control) or with code 867 (SPLITVIEW)) are forwarded by the headphones and remote control antenna to the COMAND controller unit.

The touchpad (with code 448 (Touchpad)) sends the control signals over the telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit.

IMPORTANT The CAN signals from the touchpad are looped through in the Audio/COMAND control panel.

The telephone keypad (except code 448 (Touchpad)) sends the control signals via the following route:

Telephone keypad LIN →

Audio/COMAND control panel →

Telematics CAN →

COMAND control unit

IMPORTANT Model 222

up to model year 2018

with code 864 (Rear compartment entertainment package)

The DVD drive of the COMAND controller unit can also be operated from the rear; the picture and the sound are then played back in the rear. The COMAND controller unit and the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit exchange the data that is needed in the telematics network via the MOST.

The picture signals are transmitted in the COMAND controller unit to the controller unit via a separate video line by the DVD drive. The COMAND controller unit transmits the picture signals via an LVDS line to the Audio/COMAND display.

In vehicles except code 867 (SPLITVIEW) the video playback is available on the Audio/COMAND display only if the vehicle is stationary. The COMAND controller unit reads the vehicle speed signal from the user interface CAN. When the vehicle is moving, only acoustic playback remains active and - for safety reasons - a warning is shown on the Audio/COMAND display.

In vehicles with code 867 (SPLITVIEW) the video picture can also be played back while the vehicle is moving, but only in the area of the Audio/COMAND display that is visible to the front passenger.

Activation takes place using the remote control in "SPLITVIEW" mode.

Audio is output depending on the equipment variant:

In vehicles with code 867 (SPLITVIEW) the audio signals are output via headphones if the video function has been activated via the remote control in "SPLITVIEW" mode. The COMAND controller unit sends the audio signals over the headphones and remote control antenna as Kleer® radio signals to the radio frequency headphones. The COMAND controller unit also transmits the audio signals via the following route:

LVDS line →

Audio/COMAND display →

Headphones electrical connector (cabled)

Function sequence for video mode of Rear Seat Entertainment System controller unit (with code 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment System))

The video function can be operated using the remote control. The Kleer® radio signals are sent by the remote control via the following route:

Headphones and remote control antenna →

COMAND controller unit →

MOST →

Rear entertainment controller unit

The picture signals are transmitted in the rear entertainment controller unit to the controller unit via a separate video line by the DVD drive. The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit transmits the picture signal via an LVDS line to the left rear display or the right rear display.

The audio signals are transmitted by the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller via the integrated Kleer® radio interfaces to the respective radio frequency headphones in the form of Kleer® radio signals. The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit also transmits the audio signals via the LVDS line to the left rear display or the right rear display. The left rear display or the right rear display prepares the audio signals for cabled headphones via an integrated connection.
