General telematics services function requirements
- Circuit 30
- Transport mode is inactive.
- The HERMES control unit is configured at the factory with the telephone number for the corresponding service provider.
- The vehicle owner is registered and authorized at the Service Center.
- Each service is authorized separately.
General telematics services
At the vehicle side, the telematics services are realized by the HERMES control unit via a cellular telephone system connection to the Service Center. The HERMES control unit transmits and receives the mobile radio signals via the left emergency call system antenna and the right emergency call system antenna (in model 222) or via the multifunction antenna (except code 386 (Comfort telephony)) (in model 222) or via the telematics services antenna (in model 217).
The multifunction antenna and the respective emergency call system antenna are used simultaneously and form transmitting and reception diversity.
For some services, the status of circuit 15 is taken into consideration.
The electronic ignition lock control unit transmits the signal via the following route:

The telematics services function encompasses the following subfunctions:
- Overview of telematics services
- Voice connection between vehicle and Service Center
- Position finding
- Forwarding of vehicle data, display messages, data queries and operating requests
- Tracking and notification in the event of anti-theft warning
Overview of telematics services
The following services, e.g. are available:
- Tracking and notification in the event of anti-theft warning: This service is described in greater detail at the end of the document.
- Breakdown management:
In the event of a defect on the vehicle, pressing the breakdown assistance button sets-up a voice connection to the Service Center to enable fast and effective assistance measures to be implemented.
- MB-Info:
By pressing the MB-Info button, the user can call up information on products from the Mercedes-Benz brand in addition to other voice-based services (e.g. booking a hotel) via a voice connection.
- Remote closing and opening of the doors:
The HERMES control unit receives the customer request from the Service Center and forwards the request via the diagnostic CAN to the electronic ignition lock control unit. The electronic ignition lock control unit checks whether locking or unlocking of all vehicle doors and the liftgate is possible, performs the locking or unlocking (if possible), and reports the locking status back to the HERMES control unit.
- Remote diagnosis:
On the one hand, diagnostic data are sent automatically (using scripts, for evaluation) and, on the other hand, manually too as part of breakdown assistance procedure. The manual remote diagnosis is triggered by the Service Center and confirmed by the user. As soon as the diagnostic data has been transmitted, the Service Center restores the voice connection to the vehicle.
- Transmission of vehicle position ("Vehicle Locator"):
This service allows the user to determine where the vehicle is currently located. The user receives the vehicle location either in the form of a map display (web page or iPhone), an SMS or by e-mail from the Service Center.
- Notification of a certain speed being exceeded ("Speed Alert"):
As soon as the service is activated, the HERMES control unit reads in the speed value from the diagnostic CAN at intervals of no more than 5 seconds with circuit 15 ON and sends a message to the user if the determined value is exceeded.
- Notification if a certain area has been arrived at or exited ("Geo Fencing"):
The user can determine areas for the vehicle about which, when arrived at or exited, he/she is notified via an SMS, email or automatic phone call.
- Transmission of information (e.g. map data) to the vehicle ("Remote Information Feed"):
Appropriate information is transferred to the vehicle via the Internet (e.g. Google Maps, Yahoo) or the Service Center. The HERMES control unit stores the data received with circuit 15 OFF in a buffer. If circuit 15 is ON, the HERMES control unit forwards the received data to the audio equipment as soon as this is switched on.
- Transmission of updates to vehicle ("Remote Update"):
The software of the HERMES control unit is updated without the user having to visit a workshop. The software is not updated immediately after transmission, but only 15 min. after circuit 15 OFF.
- Visual and acoustic vehicle recognition ("Flash Lights and Sound Horn"):
The visual and acoustic vehicle recognition makes it easier to find your own vehicle if it is outside the range of the transmitter key. The message for activating or terminating the panic alarm is forwarded by the HERMES control unit via the diagnostic CAN to the electronic ignition lock control unit.
Remote Start: Using the cellular telephone system connection to the Service Center, the HERMES control unit also receives the triggering signal for the "Remote Start" function (for pre-entry climate control). To achieve pre-entry climate control through operation of the air conditioning system's "Last Mode", the "Remote Start" function starts the engine and switches it off again after a limited period on a parked and locked vehicle (windows and doors closed). The HERMES control unit forwards the triggering signal via the diagnostic CAN to the electronic ignition lock control unit.
Additional function requirements for voice connection between vehicle and Service Center
- No higher-priority service (e.g. automatic or manual emergency call) is active.
Voice connection between vehicle and Service Center
The voice connection function between the vehicle and the Service Center is split up into the following subfunctions:
- Triggering the voice connection via the breakdown assistance button or the MB-Info button
- Mute function
- Hands-free
- Termination of the voice connection
- Prioritization
Triggering the voice connection via the breakdown assistance button or the MB-Info button
After the breakdown assistance button or the MB-Info button is pressed, the HERMES Control unit establishes a voice connection to the Service Center. The breakdown assistance button or the MB-Info button transmits the control signal via the front SAM control unit to the HERMES control unit.
As long as the MB-Info call or the breakdown assistance is activated, the light-emitting diode integrated in the button flashes; for this, the HERMES control unit actuates the breakdown assistance button or the MB-Info button in the opposite way. This is also indicated in the instrument cluster and on the audio/COMAND display.
The Service Center can transmit map data to the vehicle if necessary. The data is made available to the navigation module of the audio equipment.
Mute function
When a voice connection is set up, the HERMES control unit sends a signal for muting the audio sources via a direct line to the following components, which actuate the speaker system:
- Sound system amplifier control unit (with code 810 (Sound system) or code 811 (Advanced sound system))
- Audio equipment (except CODE 810 (Sound system) and except CODE 811 (Advanced sound system))
At the same time as establishing a voice connection, a data telegram is also sent to the Mercedes-Benz Service Center which contains data such as the following: time stamp, GPS position (global navigation system), language configured on audio equipment and vehicle identification number.
The setup of a voice connection to the Mercedes-Benz Service Center is aborted after several unsuccessful dialing attempts, and a corresponding message appears on the Audio/COMAND display.
The Service Center can perform a remote diagnosis if necessary.
Hands-free
The hands-free system is not available for telephone calls for the duration of the voice connection.
After a data telegram has been transmitted to the Mercedes-Benz Service Center, the user can speak to a service receptionist via the voice connection. The Mercedes-Benz Service Center carries out the call, where possible, in the language that was selected in the system settings of the audio equipment and transmitted in the data telegram. The HERMES control unit receives the outgoing voice signals over the audio equipment from the inside rearview mirror microphone. The HERMES control unit outputs the incoming voice signals over the center instrument panel speaker.
The voice output volume can be adjusted using the + and - button, setting of specific functions and the volume control of the right multifunction steering wheel button group. The right multifunction steering wheel button group sends the control signals via the following route:

Termination of the voice connection
The voice connection can be terminated via the accept/terminate phone call button of the right multifunction steering wheel button group, if this is not carried out by the Mercedes-Benz Service Center. The right multifunction steering wheel button group sends the control signals via the following route:

Prioritization
For the services that require a voice connection between the vehicle and the Service Center, the prioritization shown below is valid.
Telematics services, e.g. accident management, can also be triggered by the Service Center after an emergency call with the customer's consent. In this case, the voice connection that was set up for the emergency call is still used by means of redirecting within the Service Center. The emergency call is then converted into a service with lower priority.

Position finding
The HERMES control unit takes over the signals for position finding from the audio equipment. The audio equipment transmits the signals via the W-LAN antenna to the respective interface of the HERMES control unit.
Forwarding of vehicle data, display messages, data queries and operating requests
The HERMES control unit forwards the data, data queries and operating requests that have been received via the cellular telephone system connection to the Service Center via diagnostic CAN to the electronic ignition lock control unit, from where they are distributed further according to the respective requests. The HERMES control unit receives vehicle data via the diagnostic CAN from the electronic ignition lock control unit and forwards this and the data from the integrated position finding module in accordance with requirements via the left emergency call system antenna and the right emergency call system antenna (in model 222) or via the multifunction antenna (except code 386 (Comfort telephony)) (in model 222) or via the telematics services antenna (in model 217) to the Service Center. The content shown on the Audio/COMAND display (e.g. pop-up windows, vehicle locating symbol, field strength) is sent by the HERMES control unit over the following path:

Tracking and notification in the event of anti-theft warning
The following points are vehicle tracking objectives:
- Retrieval of stolen or misappropriated vehicles
- Fast assistance if vehicle stolen or in the event of a holdup
The vehicle tracking function consists of the following subfunctions:
- Anti-theft alarm
- Vehicle theft telephone message from vehicle owner to police and then to Service Center
- Vehicle tracking
Additional function requirements for anti-theft alarm
- Anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]) is active for t > 30 s.

After the anti-theft alarm system has been triggered, the front SAM control unit transmits the "ATA alarm" message via the following route:

The HERMES control unit transmits the "ATA alarm" message via the left emergency call system antenna or the right emergency call system antenna (in model 222) or via the multifunction antenna (except code 386 (Comfort telephony)) (in model 222) or via the telematics services antenna (in model 217) to the Service Center. The Service Center receives the "ATA [EDW] alarm" message and informs the vehicle owner that the ATA [EDW] alarm has been triggered. Vehicle tracking is not yet actuated by the Service Center.

If the vehicle owner has been informed by the Service Center that his/her vehicle has been stolen or if the vehicle owner himself/herself notices that the vehicle has been stolen, it is first necessary for the vehicle owner to report the theft to the police. The vehicle owner receives a special number from the police, which confirms that the vehicle theft has been reported.
This number is used by the vehicle owner to notify the Service Center and he/she forwards the number. The Service Center checks the request and legitimization (authorization) of the vehicle owner.
Additional function requirement for tracking
- Vehicle reported as stolen by vehicle owner over the telephone to police and then to Service Center as well as legitimization at Service Center
Vehicle tracking
After notification of the theft and legitimization at the Service Center an initiation command is sent to the vehicle by the Service Center. The initiation command is received by the communications module integrated in the HERMES control unit via the left emergency call system antenna or the right emergency call system antenna (in model 222) or via the multifunction antenna (except code 386 (Comfort telephony)) (in model 222) or via the telematics services antenna (in model 217). The communications module integrated in the HERMES control unit then transmits position data to the service provider via the left emergency call system antenna or the right emergency call system antenna (in model 222) or via the multifunction antenna (except code 386 (Comfort telephony)) (in model 222) or via the telematics services antenna (in model 217). The Service Center forwards the location of the vehicle to the responsible command staff (e.g. police).
The position data is transmitted cyclically and for the following events:
- Exceeding a certain distance
- Circuit 15 ON or circuit 15 OFF (switch ignition on or off)
Vehicle tracking can only be deactivated by the Service Center.
