Rear Seat Entertainment system, general

The Rear Seat Entertainment system is the entertainment system for the rear passengers and includes the following areas:

IMPORTANT The Rear Seat Entertainment System controller unit can also be used to make seat adjustments for the multicontour seats in the rear passenger compartment.

The Rear Seat Entertainment system has the following system-specific components:

The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit manages the media sources in the rear, and forms the telematics network via the MOST together with the head unit. This means that all head unit media sources can also be used via the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit. The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit receives the TV video signals (with code 865 (TV tuner)) from the TV tuner control unit via MOST.

The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit is operated with the remote control. To do this, the remote control transmits Kleer® radio signals via the following route:

Left rear display or right rear display →

Telematics CAN →

Head unit →

MOST →

Rear entertainment controller unit

IMPORTANT Intervention in the use of the Rear Seat Entertainment system can take place from the front seats via the "Parental Control" function.

The Rear Seat Entertainment system function includes the following procedures:

Function sequence, rear media sources

The following media sources are controlled and managed via the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit:

IMPORTANT Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) devices, Zune MP3 players, iPods® or iPads®, and smartphones can also be connected to the rear USB electrical connection.

The integrated Blu-ray drive is managed internally by the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit.

The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit receives the signals of connected mobile terminals from the rear multimedia connection unit. The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit supplies mobile terminals connected to the rear multimedia connection unit's USB connectors with voltage.

The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit receives audio signals via the 2 rear USB connectors via a direct line. The rear HDMI connection is connected via an HSVL line to the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit so that high-resolution video signals can also be transferred, e.g. from a smartphone or a games console.

Mobile terminals connected to the rear multimedia connection unit's 2 rear USB connectors are automatically detected and displayed as media sources on the respective, active display (A40/5, A40/6). Operation is controlled by the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit.

The mobile terminals connected to the rear multimedia connection unit's HDMI connection are not detected automatically but must be selected in the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit menu. Operation takes place on the connected mobile terminal.

The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit transmits audio signals via an integrated Kleer® radio interface to the respective radio frequency headphones (with code U31 (Rear Seat Entertainment system headphones (number 1)) or with code U58 (Rear Seat Entertainment system headphones (number 2))). Audio signals for cabled headphones and video signals are transmitted by the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit via an HSVL line to the respective display. The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit sends control signals along the following path:

MOST →

Head unit →

Telematics CAN →

Left rear display and right rear display

IMPORTANT The connection for cabled headphones is integrated in the respective display.

Function sequence for requesting media sources in the telematics network

The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit requests all media sources that it does not manage itself from the head unit via MOST, and forwards control signals for these media sources to the head unit via the same route. The head unit processes the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit signals, and transmits the requested signals via MOST to the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit.

Function sequence for extended functions for navigation mode

Selected navigation-based functions can be called up in the Rear Seat Entertainment system in order to provide the rear passengers with information. The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit receives the signals via MOST from the head unit, and forwards them to the respective display via an HSVL line.

The following navigation-based functions are available:

Online map display

If an Internet connection is available, an online map display can be requested from the service provider by the Rear Seat Entertainment system. The online map display also makes it possible to create routes and transmit routes to the COMAND head unit.

"Drive Show"

The "Drive Show" provides information about the current route (e.g. distance from destination, driving time to destination) in a sequence of diagrams that are each displayed for about 10 s. The contents depend on the status of the navigation system (route guidance active or inactive), the vehicle equipment (e.g. hybrid vehicle) and the availability of the Internet connection. The user cannot influence the "Drive Show", only switch on and off.

Access option to Mercedes-Benz "Travel Guide" (accessory)

If the Mercedes-Benz "Travel Guide" (accessory) is available, it can also be used via the Rear Seat Entertainment System controller unit.
