TV mode, general
The tuner unit makes it possible to receive digital TV channels in the vehicle and show them on the audio/COMAND display. For the control of the TV functions the COMAND controller unit communicates via MOST with the tuner unit.
In vehicles with code 867 (SPLITVIEW), the front passenger can also watch the TV screen during a journey. In vehicles except code 867 (SPLITVIEW), the TV screen is switched off for safety reasons when the vehicle is moving. When the vehicle is moving, only acoustic playback remains active and a warning appears on the Audio/COMAND display. The COMAND controller unit receives the speed signal over the user interface CAN from the instrument cluster.
Model 217, 222
up to model year 2018
with code 498 (Japanese version)
with code 865 (digital TV)
Emergency warnings are also shown while driving on the Audio/COMAND display.
Model 222
up to model year 2018
with code 864 (Rear compartment entertainment package)
with code 865 (digital TV)
The TV functions can also be used in the rear.
The TV functions can be selected, activated and configured using the following controls on the left and right multifunction steering wheel button groups:
- Scroll forward/back button
- System selection button
- "Back" button
- OK button.
- + and - button for setting specific functions and for volume adjustment
- Mute function button
The signals of the left and right multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded via the following route:
Steering wheel electronics →
Steering LIN →
Steering column tube module control unit →
Chassis FlexRay →
Electronic ignition lock control unit →
User interface CAN →
Instrument cluster →
User interface CAN →
COMAND control unit
The TV functions can be selected, activated and configured using the following controls on the Audio/COMAND control panel:
- Audio/COMAND controller
- "ON" button
- "Back" button
- Media button
- Volume adjustment button
The Audio/COMAND control panel sends the signals over the telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit.
In vehicles with code 816 (Entertainment remote control) or with code 867 (SPLITVIEW), the TV functions can be selected, activated and configured using the remote control. The headphones and remote control antenna receives the radio signals from the remote control and forwards them to the COMAND controller unit.
On vehicles except code 448 (Touchpad), TV functions can be operated with the telephone keypad according to the context. The signals of the telephone keypad are transferred via the following route:
Telephone keypad LIN →
Audio/COMAND control panel →
Telematics CAN →
COMAND control unit
On vehicles with code 448 (Touchpad), the TV functions can be operated with the touchpad. The touchpad transfers the signals via telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit.
The signals from the touchpad are looped through in the Audio/COMAND control panel.
The COMAND controller unit sends control requests over MOST to the tuner unit.
The tuner unit separates the video and audio signals that are contained in the TV signals. The TV mode is therefore comprised as follows:
- Function sequence for reception of TV signals
- Function sequence for output of video signals
- Function sequence for output of audio signals
- Function sequence for transferring TV signals (with code 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment System))
- Additional information (with CODE 498 (Japan version))
- Additional information (except CODE 498 (Japan version) and except CODE 494 (USA version))
Function sequence for reception of TV signals
Model 217.3 and model 222:
TV 1 and TV 2 signals are received via the following route:
Rear window antenna →
TV 1 antenna amplifier or TV 2 and DAB band III antenna amplifier →
Tuner unit
Model 217.3, 222
up to model year 2018
with code 537 (DAB digital radio standard (Digital Audio Broadcast))
with code 865 (digital TV)
The tuner unit receives digital radio (DAB) band III signals over the same input as the TV-2 signals. The tuner unit separates the signals internally with an integrated antenna splitter.
Model 217.4:
The TV 1 signals are received as follows:
Windshield antenna →
FM 2, DAB and TV 1 antenna amplifier →
Tuner unit
TV 2 signals are received via the following route:
Windshield antenna →
TV 2 and DAB band III antenna amplifier →
TV and DAB antenna splitter (with code 537 (Digital radio (DAB)) and with code 865 (TV tuner))
Tuner unit
TV 3 signals in model 217.3, model 217.4 and model 222 are received via:
Windshield antenna →
TV 3 antenna amplifier →
Tuner unit
The tuner unit processes the TV signals and separates the video signals from the audio signals.
Function sequence for output of video signals
The tuner unit transfers the video signals via LVDS lines via the following route:
COMAND controller unit →
Audio/COMAND display
Function sequence for output of audio signals
In vehicles except code 810 (Sound system) or code 811 (Advanced sound system), the tuner unit sends audio signals over MOST to the COMAND controller unit. The COMAND controller unit amplifies the audio signals and outputs them over the speaker system.
In vehicles with code 810 (Sound system) or code 811 (Advanced sound system), the tuner unit sends the audio signals over the MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit. The sound system amplifier control unit amplifies the audio signals and outputs them over the speaker system.
Function sequence for transferring TV signals (with code 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment System))
In vehicles with code 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment System), TV signals can be requested for display in the rear passenger compartment by the Rear Seat Entertainment System controller unit.
The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit sends the control signals from the rear over MOST to the COMAND controller unit. The audio signals are received by the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit over the MOST from the COMAND controller unit. The video signals are received by the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit over a low voltage differential signaling line directly by the tuner unit.
Additional information (with CODE 498 (Japan version))
The supplemental information is subdivided into the following categories:
- TV reception
- Additional functions
TV reception
The reception of encoded programs is possible with a B-CAS Subscriber identification module (SIM) card. With digital TV reception the "one-segment" substandard (TV standard for mobile telephony) is also supported in addition to the "full-segment" substandard.
Additional functions
The tuner unit has the following functions:
- Digital image storage
- Last settings
- "BML" (Broadcast Markup Language) function: The tuner unit supports video text for all available Japanese TV stations. This enables information to be shown similar to a small website on weather, news, etc. By selecting a region in the setting list you can obtain region-specific information.
- "EPG" (Electronic Program Guide) function: The Electronic Program Guide shows information such as start and end of broadcasts and detailed information on the television programs for each TV station.
- Bilingual function: Two languages are supported depending on station availability, e.g. Japanese on the main-sound track and English on the sub-sound track.
