Information on touchpad
The touchpad is installed in two variants.
Variant 1 (with code 448 (Touchpad)): The touchpad is installed together with the Audio/COMAND control panel. The touchpad is connected only to the telematics CAN.
Variant 2 (with code 446 (Touchpad only)): The touchpad is installed instead of the Audio/COMAND control panel. In this case, the lower control panel is connected via the LCP LIN to the touchpad. The touchpad is also connected to the telematics CAN.

Mobile telephone system, general
A differentiation is made between the following equipment and utilization variants in the mobile phone system:
- Basic telephony
- Telephony with code 899 (Multifunction telephony)
- Telephony with code 380 (Car telephony package)
- Telephony with code 856 (Business telephony in the rear)
All variants use Bluetooth® technology for data transfer.
A mobile phone authorized at the head unit can also be used as a modem for accessing the Internet or as a playback device as part of Bluetooth® Audio.
The head unit sends and receives telephone signals over the Bluetooth® antenna. The head unit generates the display messages and sends them over an HSVL line to the Audio/COMAND display. If the head unit is not switched on, it can be activated using the "ON" button in the lower control panel (with code 446 (Touchpad only)) or in the Audio/COMAND control panel (with code 448 (Touchpad)). The "ON" button signal is forwarded by either the lower control panel (with code 446 (Touchpad only) or the Audio/COMAND control panel (with code 448 (Touchpad)) via the following route:

Head unit
The mobile phone system is described here using basic telephony as an example. The special telephony features with possible equipment variants are summarized at the end of this document.
The mobile phone system includes the following areas:

Bluetooth®
Mobile terminals that support the corresponding profiles can be easily and quickly connected to the head unit using Bluetooth®. Bluetooth® is a worldwide open standard for connecting Bluetooth® devices (e.g. mobile phone) wirelessly and is based on radio technology in the 2.4 GHz range. One advantage of Bluetooth®, in addition to the wide availability of Bluetooth® devices, is the uncomplicated and spontaneous connection of Bluetooth® devices. The extremely high level of data security (128-bit encoding) and the relatively limited radius (approx. 10 m) of this type of Bluetooth® network are what makes the use of Bluetooth® in the vehicle interesting. The head unit can integrate mobile phones into the vehicle hierarchy over the mobile phone's Bluetooth® interface and the Bluetooth® antenna. The head unit automatically searches for the mobile phones last connected, and connects automatically.
If the mobile phone is not automatically connected to the head unit or if the head unit is to be establish a connection to another mobile phone, then the connection must be made manually over the telephone base function. Authorized telephones can be selected from a list. Non-authorized telephones must be authorized first. Up to 15 mobile phones can be authorized at the same time. When authorizing a new telephone if 15 telephones are already authorized, the user is prompted to first delete one of the existing data records. Detailed information on authorization is available in the respective operator's manual.
Switch on/off characteristics
A mobile phone operated via Bluetooth® is switched on and off on the mobile phone itself. The SIM PIN (Personal Identification Number) prompt, if set on the mobile phone and if it is transmitting the status, only appears on the mobile phone and the PIN must be entered into the mobile phone. After logging into the mobile telephone network provider's network, the mobile telephone network provider and the signal level are displayed in the status bar of the Audio/COMAND display.
The switch-off signal via the mobile phone button is processed internally in the mobile phone. If the rechargeable battery of the mobile phone is empty, the mobile phone is also switched off. This process also runs internally in the mobile phone. The message "Ready for Bluetooth® telephony" is displayed on the Audio/COMAND display and the system automatically searches for mobile phones used last.
The head unit can be switched on and off with the "ON" button in the lower control panel (with code 446 (Touchpad only)) or the Audio/COMAND control panel (with code 448 (Touchpad)).

Call signal
The head unit receives the call signal over the Bluetooth® antenna from the mobile phone. The head unit transmits the ringing tone either directly to the speaker system or via MOST in vehicles with code 810 (Sound system) to the sound system amplifier control unit, with code 811 (Advanced sound system) to the Advanced sound system amplifier control unit. If the mobile phone supports "In-band ringing", the mobile phone ring tone is emitted over the speakers, otherwise the head unit's default ringing sound is used.
The head unit mutes the currently active audio source (e.g. during radio operation), and displays the caller ID via the HSVL line on the Audio/COMAND display.
Establish, end, accept, reject or toggle call
Telephone numbers can be entered using a character bar on the Audio/COMAND display or they can be searched for and selected in call lists or in the address book. The mobile phone system can be operated using the following components:

- Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
Toggle: If during a telephone call another incoming call is received or another telephone connection is set up, then the new call is activated and the existing one put on hold. It is then possible to switch (toggle) between the active call and the one on hold.
Conference connection: If the mobile phone supports the function, it is possible - after several calls have been connected - to switch, not only between the calls, as for toggling, but to have all the calls active at the same time in a conference connection.

The mobile phone control is processed internally, status changes are received by the head unit over the Bluetooth® antenna.
Audio/COMAND control panel (with code 448 (Touchpad))
The Audio/COMAND controller is used to call up and activate the functions in the Telephone menu. The "Back" button supports navigation in the menus.
The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded to the head unit via telematics CAN.
Touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only) or with code 448 (Touchpad))
The head unit receives the control signals from the touchpad via the telematics CAN.

Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
The voice control system is activated with the voice control on switch and favorites on the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group. When a call is being connected or a call being accepted, the voice control system is automatically switched off.

Head unit
When the voice control system is active, the voice commands are recorded by the driver hands-free system microphone and forwarded via a direct line to the head unit. If necessary, the head unit sends the control signals over the Bluetooth® antenna to the mobile phone.
The individual voice commands are listed in the "Linguatronic operator's manual".
Using the phone in hands-free mode
The voice input in the hands-free mode is recorded by the driver hands-free system microphone and the front passenger hands-free system microphone, and forwarded to the head unit. The head unit sends the signals over the Bluetooth® antenna to the mobile phone. The head unit receives the incoming signals over the Bluetooth® antenna from the mobile phone and emits them at the speaker system. In vehicles with code 810 (Sound system), the head unit forwards the incoming voice signals over MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, in vehicles with code 811 (Advanced sound system) accordingly to the advanced sound system amplifier control unit, which amplifies the signals and sends them to the speaker system. The volume of the voice outputs can be regulated e.g. with the volume adjustment button on the lower control panel (with code 446 (Touchpad only)), the Audio/COMAND control panel (with code 448 (Touchpad)) or with the volume adjustment switch in the head unit multifunction steering wheel button group.
Address book
The user can manage all the contact data in the address book (view, edit, add, delete and create). The address book contains the address entries stored in the head unit. Address entries can only be removed by deleting individual entries or by deleting the entire address book. Address-relevant mobile phone system applications can be directly started and supplied with the stored data via address book entries. Address data from the mobile phone, from external devices (e.g. PDA, notebook, etc.) or storage media (e.g. Secure Digital (SD) card, Universal Serial Bus (USB) stick) can be stored in the address book, and are then permanently available as address entries. The address data can be sent to the address book via the following system components:
- Bluetooth® interface of the mobile phone and the Bluetooth® antenna on the head unit
- NFC interface of the mobile phone and near field communication antenna on the mobile phone cradle control unit
- SD card slot on multimedia connection unit
- USB connector 1 or USB connector 2 of multimedia connection unit
The address data transmitted via Bluetooth® is received by the head unit from the Bluetooth® antenna. The address data transferred via NFC can only be transmitted as vCards from the mobile phone. The head unit receives address data from the multimedia connection unit via a direct line.
Address book entries can contain the following information among other things:
- Last name, first name and company
- "Yomigana field" (for phonetic notation entry of name in the "Katakana" syllabary) (with code 498 (Japan version))
- Postal addresses (private or business)
- Telephone numbers (several telephone numbers can be saved under one address entry with different symbols)
- Geo position
The call can be established via the voice control system for each entry with a completed "Yomigana field".
"Seamless switch"
"Seamless Switch" provides the following functionality:
- An existing telephone conversation can be continued in hands-free mode (e.g. when getting into the vehicle) if the head unit is switched on and "Private mode" has not been activated on the mobile phone.
- An existing telephone call can also be continued in hands-free mode for up to approx. 30 min after switching off the head unit.
- An existing telephone call can be continued on the mobile phone when "Private Mode" is selected on the telephone or the telephone is removed from the contact surface of the mobile phone cradle control unit (with code 899 (Multifunction telephony)).

With some Japanese mobile phones you can select how the mobile phone behaves if a connection is interrupted. If the "Switch off if connection is interrupted" setting has been selected, "Seamless Switch" cannot be activated because a brief connection interruption occurs.

The "Seamless Switch" function is not available for SAP telephony (SIM Access Profile).
Short Message Service (SMS) (except code 498 (Japan version))
The SMS application allows the user to receive, transmit and manage his/her SMS messages (e.g. to read or delete them). For this, the SMS messages previously received on the mobile phone as well as the new SMS messages are forwarded to the head unit. The following SMS functions are possible:
- Receive
- Read on display of mobile phone and on audio/COMAND display
- Read out (English or German)
- Writing or dictation
- Transmit
- Delete
- Mail inbox list of the most recent SMS messages, sorted by date (choice of displaying either the sender or the start of the text for each SMS)
The SMS function requires the Message Access Profile (MAP) to be supported. Under certain circumstances, loading SMS messages may take a long time. This may be because of the mobile phone or the number of SMS messages in the mobile phone.
As soon as the head unit is connected to the mobile phone, it starts to receive the SMS messages already stored on the mobile phone and any new incoming SMS messages via the Bluetooth® antenna from the mobile phone. The functions for writing, dictating, sending, and managing SMS messages are called up via the basic telephone function.
The head unit shows them on the Audio/COMAND display over the HSVL line. When the SMS is being read out, the head unit transmits the audio signals either directly to the speaker system or, in vehicles with code 810 (Sound system), via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, with code 811 (Advanced sound system) to the Advanced sound system amplifier control unit.
On dictation, the driver hands-free system microphone and the front passenger hands-free system microphone record the user language's acoustic signals, and transmit them as a converted digital signal to the head unit via a direct line.
Telephony (with code 899 (Multifunction telephony))
The mobile phone signals are sent and received via the multifunction antenna (model 222) or the telephone and stationary heater antenna (model 217). For communication via the antenna connection, the mobile phone is placed in the mobile phone cradle control unit in the center console.
The mobile phone system supports mobile phones with the Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile radio standard.
Telephony with code 899 (Multifunction telephony) exhibits the following special features:

Functions of mobile phone cradle control unit
The mobile phone cradle control unit fulfills the following functions:
- Connection from mobile phone to multifunction antenna (model 222) or telephone and stationary heater antenna (model 217)
- Inductive power supply for mobile phone, if the mobile phone supports the Qi standard.
- Forwarding of wake-up signal from the head unit
- Fast log-in option for mobile phone through the Near Field Communication antenna and the NFC interface of the mobile phone cradle control unit
Communication with the head unit or the telephone control unit is implemented via the mobile phone's Bluetooth® interface.

Use of the telephony control unit's Bluetooth® interface takes priority over telephony via the head unit.
To ensure smooth communication of the mobile phone with the mobile phone cradle control unit, the cellular telephone system signals are sent through capacitive coupling.
Switch-on characteristics
The mobile phone system is automatically switched on by a wake-up pulse when the head unit is switched on. The head unit transmits the signal to the mobile phone cradle control unit. The mobile phone cradle control unit routes the signal inductively to the mobile phone.
Personal Identification Number (PIN) query
A prompt for the PIN is shown after switching on the mobile phone if the mobile phone is configured for this. The PIN prompt is shown by the head unit over HSVL line on the Audio/COMAND display. The PIN can be entered using the head unit controls.
Near Field Communication (NFC) (with code 899 (Multifunction telephony) or with code 897 (Wireless mobile phone charging))
The Near Field Communication is an international transmission standard for the wireless exchange of data via radio technology over very short distances of a few centimeters. Via Near Field Communication, mobile phones that support the NFC standard can be easily and quickly authorized and connected to the vehicle's mobile phone system. To do this, it is sufficient to hold the mobile phone's NFC interface against the Near Field Communication antenna. The data for identifying the mobile phone are transmitted via the following route:

Charging process (with code 897 (Wireless mobile phone charging))
If the mobile phone supports the Qi standard for the wireless charging process and it is located on the mobile phone cradle control unit, it is inductively charged via the contact surface of the mobile phone cradle control unit. To regulate the smartphone's power supply, the head unit receives information on the smartphone battery (e.g. state of charge) via the telematics CAN from the mobile phone cradle control unit.
For a faster charging process or if the Qi standard is not supported, the mobile phone can be connected to one of the multimedia connection unit's USB connectors using a charging cable included in the scope of delivery.
Telephony (with code 380 (Car telephony package))
When telephony is used for the first time in the vehicle, the user is asked via a pop-up window on the Audio/COMAND display whether he wants to use the head unit's basic telephony or telephony with code 380 (Car telephony package).
The mobile phone signals are sent and received via the multifunction antenna (model 222) or the telephone and stationary heater antenna (model 217). Connection is carried out via the following route:

Telephone control unit
The telephone control unit supports various Bluetooth® profiles for the function of telephony with code 380 (Car telephony package), and uses these to communicate with the head unit's Bluetooth® antenna.
The telephone control unit supports the SIM Access Profile, the hands-free profile (HFP), the message access profile (MAP), the Serial Port Profile (SSP) and the Phonebook Access Profile (PBAP).
The mobile phone system supports the Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile radio standard.
Telephony with code 380 (Car telephony package) reveals the following special considerations:

Switch-on characteristics
The mobile phone system is automatically switched on by a wake-up pulse when the head unit is switched on. The head unit transmits the signal via the telematics CAN to the telephone control unit.
Personal Identification Number (PIN) query
A prompt for the PIN is shown after switching on the mobile phone if the SIM card is configured for this. The PIN prompt is shown by the head unit over HSVL line on the Audio/COMAND display. The PIN can be entered using the head unit controls. The PIN of a connected telephone or the SIM card can be stored in the telephone control unit so that it does not need to be entered again when switching on.
Telephone control unit
The telephone control unit can be used for telephony in two different ways:
- With the SIM card inserted, the telephone control unit is a fully functional communication module.
- The telephone control unit can additionally use the SIM card of a mobile phone carried along in the vehicle. The required SIM card configuration data are transferred to the telephone control unit via Bluetooth®.
If the user does not insert a SIM card into the telephone control unit and there is no mobile phone that supports the SIM Access Profile, there is no necessity for telephony with code 380 (Car telephony package). Basic telephony via the head unit in the vehicle is sufficient. Mobile phones that are to be used for telephony with the telephone control unit, including integrated telephone module and antenna connection, must support the SAP and be authorized once with the telephone control unit. However, no SAP connection can be established during an active telephone call on the mobile phone, but the vehicle's hands-free system can be used. The telephone control unit's integrated telephone module is not necessary for this exception. An HFP connection is sufficient.
If the mobile phone is not SAP-capable, hands-free mode can also be used via an HFP connection.
In total, up to 14 mobile phones and one SIM card can be authorized in the telephone control unit. After switching on the head unit, the telephone control unit automatically searches for all authorized mobile phones. The first to respond to the request is connected. If a SIM card is inserted into the telephone control unit although a mobile phone is already connected, the inserted SIM card is used and connected for the mobile phone system at the telephony control unit. It is still used for telephony even when the head unit is subsequently switched on.
If an existing connection with a mobile phone is to be replaced with another mobile phone, the existing connection must first be separated and the intended mobile phone manually connected by selecting it in the device list.
The telephone control unit is Internet-capable if the mobile phone contract that is used has a data option.
A ring tone can be selected from a list of ring tones for each SIM card, in the mobile phone or the telephone control unit.
Restriction on the mobile phone
As long as the mobile phone for telephony is connected to the telephone control unit via a SAP Bluetooth® connection, the telephony function on the mobile phone is rejected and the Internet connection is interrupted. No mail or WhatsApp messages can therefore be received either. The mobile phone is in sleep mode and is thus offline.
If e.g. a status update for all messages on the mobile phone is desired, the user can wake the mobile phone and establish an Internet connection via the head unit's hot spot connection, provided that the mobile phone is connected to the hot spot via WLAN.
Function requirements for combination mode
- Combination mode is activated.
- The mobile phone is not connected to the telephone control unit via the SIM Access Profile but via the hands-free profile (HFP).
- A SIM card is inserted in the telephone control unit's card slot.
If combination mode is activated, the SIM card inserted in the telephone control unit only connects if a Bluetooth® connection to the combined mobile phone has been established.
Combination mode
When combination mode is activated, the telephone control unit supports the following functions:
- The contact data from the logged-in mobile phone are transferred via Bluetooth®.
- If both SIM cards are called simultaneously, the SIM card in the telephone control unit is used for telephony. The other call on the mobile phone is not shown on the Audio/COMAND display, and is transmitted as a missed call to the telephone control unit via Bluetooth® on renewed connection.
- If only the mobile phone is called, the call can be accepted using the mobile phone system.
Telephony (with code 856 (Business telephony in the rear))
Telephony with code 856 (Business telephony in the rear) is an extension of telephony with code 380 (Car telephony package) for telephony in the rear. For this extension, the telephone control unit functions as a routing center between the head unit, the mobile phone and the rear telephone receiver. Rear passenger compartment telephony is operated with the rear telephone receiver and the Rear Seat Entertainment remote control.
In the case of an incoming call, the call signal sounds from the rear telephone receiver and the vehicle speaker system if the mute function on the rear telephone receiver is not activated. The rear telephone receiver and the head unit receive the call signal from the telephone control unit via Bluetooth®. The head unit transmits the ringing tone either directly to the speaker system or via MOST in vehicles with code 810 (Sound system) to the sound system amplifier control unit, with code 811 (Advanced sound system) to the Advanced sound system amplifier control unit. In additional, the head unit mutes the currently active audio source (e.g. during radio operation), and shows the caller ID on the displays. For the display on the left rear display and the right rear display, the head unit transmits the call signal via the following route:

An LED on the rear telephone receiver lights up to visually indicate an incoming call.
An incoming call can be accepted on the rear telephone receiver or the head unit.
A new telephone connection can be selected on the head unit or via the Rear Seat Entertainment system remote control, and can be established on the head unit or, on transfer to the rear telephone receiver, also on the rear telephone receiver. To select contacts, the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit obtains the address book from the head unit. The remote control's control signals are received by the Kleer® radio interface of the left rear display and the right rear display. The head unit transmits the address data via MOST to the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit, which displays them via an HSVL line on the left rear display or the right rear display. If a telephone call is conducted in head unit hands-free mode, communication is carried out via Bluetooth® as in the case of telephony with code 380 (Car telephony package).
If a telephone call is conducted on the rear telephone receiver, the telephone control unit transmits the incoming telephone signals via Bluetooth® to the rear telephone receiver. Either a SIM card inserted in the telephone control unit or that of a mobile phone can be used for telephony on the rear telephone receiver.
As a maximum of one mobile phone can be connected to the telephone control unit, the rear passenger's mobile phone has priority. If the mobile phone does not support the SIM Access Profile, the telephone control unit telephony function, including integrated telephone module and antenna connection, cannot be used.
Telephony on the rear telephone receiver is nevertheless possible through voice signal transfer via the HFP connection of the mobile phone, the telephone control unit and the rear telephone receiver. If the mobile phone is lying on the rear mobile phone cradle control unit, the telephone signals are received via the following route from the mobile telephone network for better reception:

If a telephone call is received or made via the head unit and then transferred to the rear telephone receiver, the telephone control unit not only communicates with the head unit via Bluetooth® but also uses the rear telephone receiver's Bluetooth® connection. Transfer to the rear telephone receiver is activated by pressing the rear telephone receiver's accept phone call button.
Telephony via the rear telephone receiver
The Bluetooth® interface integrated in the rear telephone receiver transmits and receives telephone signals via the Bluetooth® interface from the telephone control unit. The hands-free profile (HFP) and the Serial Port Profile (SPP) are used for rear telephone receiver communication with the telephone control unit via Bluetooth®.
If the telephone control unit is woken via the telematics CAN by switching on the mobile phone system at the head unit, the operational readiness of the rear telephone receiver is checked via a direct line.
"Privacy mode"
If the rear telephone receiver's privacy mode button is activated, neither contact data in the address book nor SMS from the mobile phone that is used can be seen on the displays (A40/5, A40/6, A40/8) or edited.
Voice control system
If the rear telephone receiver's voice control system button is pushed, the mobile phone's voice control system is activated. For rear telephony, the user can e.g. establish a telephone call via voice commands in this manner.
Mute function
If the rear telephone receiver's mute function button is pushed during an active telephone call, the rear telephone receiver microphone function is deactivated. Otherwise, the output of the call signal on the head unit and the rear telephone receiver is muted on actuation of the mute function button.
Charging process (with code 898 (Wireless charging in the rear))
If the mobile phone supports the Qi standard for the wireless charging process, and it is located on the contact surface of the rear mobile phone cradle control unit, it is inductively charged. To regulate the smartphone's power supply, the head unit receives information on the smartphone battery (e.g. state of charge) via the telematics CAN from the rear mobile phone cradle control unit.
For a faster charging process or if the Qi standard is not supported, the mobile phone can be connected to one of the rear multimedia connection unit's USB connectors (A90/6) using a charging cable included in the scope of delivery.
