DANGER Risk of fire  /risk of explosion due to short circuit and escaping oxyhydrogen gas. Risk of (burn) injury caused by caustic burns to eyes, skin and mucous membranes from battery electrolyte/mist, short circuit and arcing. Risk of poisoning  caused by swallowing battery electrolyte or absorption of lead through the skin or body orifices. Risk of death  due to voltage U >= 30 V AC and U >= 60 V DC. No fires, sparks, open flames, or smoking.
Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing, and glasses. Pour battery acid only into suitable and appropriately marked containers.

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Print out checklist for transport safety of on-board electrical system battery (G1). Model 222.077/177/178/179/187/188
When replacing the on-board electrical system battery (G1).
 
REFER TO FORMS Transport safety checklist for starter battery, form   OF54.10-P-3000-13A
2 Answer the questions on the installed on-board electrical system battery (G1) based on the transport safety checklist. Model 222.077/177/178/179/187/188
When replacing the on-board electrical system battery (G1).
 
3 Switch off all electrical consumers, and disconnect charger and vehicle diagnosis system. If electrical consumers are active or a charger or diagnostic system is connected.  
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS   NOTES Switch off all electrical consumers.
Risk of damage to consumers when disconnecting/connecting ground line (1).

4 Confirm change of on-board electrical system battery (G1) using diagnosis system in signal acquisition and actuation module under Actuation menu item. Model 222.004/057/104/157

REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS   IMPORTANT This updates the charging characteristic for the on-board electrical system battery (G1) AD00.00-P-2000-04B
5 Switch off ignition and store transmitter key outside of transmitter range (min. 2 m).    
6 Unlock engine hood. Model 222.004/057/104/157
IMPORTANT Opening the hood deactivates the pre-entry climate control. This ensures that no currents are flowing in the 12 V on-board electrical system.
 
7 Remove partition trim (2).   AR68.30-P-4600LF
8 Release nut (3) and disconnect ground line (1) from negative terminal of on-board electrical system battery (G1). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, charging cable to negative terminal/positive terminal of on-board electrical system battery *BA54.10-P-1003-01J 
9 Remove POSITIVE terminal cover (8).    
10 Using a diode test lamp, check the on-board electrical system for voltage between the positive line (10) and the disconnected ground line (1). If diode test lamp lights up,

Detach ground line from additional battery.

NOTES Cover up the positive line (10).
There is a risk of short circuit otherwise.
IMPORTANT If the diode test lamp lights up, check the on-board electrical system after completing the operation.

11 Release and disconnect electrical connector (4) from battery sensor (B95).    
12 Place electric line (5) to one side.    
WARNING Risk of injury  during testing and repair operations related to pyrotechnical components Do not expose pyrotechnical component parts to temperatures above 100°C or 212°F.
Disconnect current supply when working on such component parts.

13 Release and disconnect electrical connector (6) from pyrotechnical separator (K88).

14 Place electric line (7) to one side.    
15 Release nut (9) and disconnect positive line (10) from positive pole of on-board electrical system battery (G1). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, charging cable to negative terminal/positive terminal of on-board electrical system battery *BA54.10-P-1003-01J 
16 Detach elbow fitting (12) from on-board electrical system battery (G1). INSTALLATION NOTES Check vent hose (11) is seated and routed correctly.
Battery acid vapors emitted will otherwise damage surrounding components.
 
17 Remove nut (13). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, tensioning strap to battery frame *BA54.10-P-1002-01J 
18 Take tab (14) off threaded pin (15) and place to one side. INSTALLATION NOTES Do not install tensioning strap (16) twisted.  
19 Take on-board electrical system battery (G1) out of battery carrier (17) and out of the trunk. NOTES Carefully remove on-board electrical system battery (G1) from the battery carrier (17).
The threaded pin (15) may otherwise damage the on-board electrical system battery (G1).
 
20 Install in the reverse order.

21 Answer the questions on the removed on-board electrical system battery (G1) based on the transport safety checklist. Model 222.077/177/178/179/187/188
When replacing the on-board electrical system battery (G1).
