Setting Play Between Thrust Element And Steering Rack - AR46.20-P-0601LWE

  Preliminary operations     
1 Remove rack-and-pinion steering. Model 253.992/993 AR46.20-P-0600RFW
    Model 238 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive) AR46.20-P-0600LWO
    Model 205, 213 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)
Model 253 (except 253.992/993)

2 Attach rack-and-pinion steering to mount of steering gear housing. IMPORTANT Only the specified tools may be used.

3 Check rack-and-pinion steering for previous adjustment procedure. IMPORTANT Only one adjustment procedure for the rack-and-pinion steering is permissible. If color coding (arrow A) is already present on the adjustment screw (1) for the steering gear housing (2), it can be assumed that the adjustment procedure was already conducted.
If color coding (arrow A) is already present:
↓
Replace rack-and-pinion steering.
 
4 Remove loose soiling from steering gear housing (2) without using cleaning agent. IMPORTANT Make sure that the workplace is clean when carrying out the work described below and while performing repairs.
Only the specified tools may be used.
 
5 Move rack-and-pinion steering to center position. IMPORTANT The notch (arrow B) on the cover (3) must line up exactly with the marking (arrow C) on the steering gear housing (2).

6 Unfasten boot (4) and slide in direction of tie rod end. Model 205, 213, 238 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)

7 Carefully pull rubber plug (5) out of adjustment screw (1). IMPORTANT The rubber plug (5) must be replaced.  
  Input measurement     
8 Determine play between thrust piece and steering rack. NOTES
The specified test torque of the toothed rack must not be exceeded.
Otherwise it is not possible to check the play correctly.

    Play between thrust piece and steering rack *BE46.20-P-1001-01F

    SPECIAL TOOL Bracket
If play is less than 0.4 mm,
↓
Adjust play between thrust piece and steering rack.
If the play is ≥ 0.4 mm.
↓
Replace rack-and-pinion steering.

9 Adjust play between toothed rack and thrust piece by screwing in adjustment screw (1). NOTES
Always make sure that the play between the thrust piece and the toothed rack is only adjusted by turning the adjustment screw (1) in the screw-in direction.
Otherwise the thread of the adjustment screw (1) and the rack-and-pinion steering will be damaged.

  Final measurement     
10 Check play between thrust piece and toothed rack.   AR46.20-P-0601-03LWE 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Toothed rack *BA46.20-P-1004-01Q 
    Play between thrust piece and steering rack *BE46.20-P-1001-01F

    SPECIAL TOOL Bracket
If play is greater than the specified tolerance range:
↓
Adjust play between thrust piece and steering rack again.
If play is less than the specified tolerance range:
↓
Replace rack-and-pinion steering.

INSPECT Check     
11 Turn toothed rack from end stop to end stop using socket wrench on rack-and-pinion steering. IMPORTANT 'The toothed rack must move easily and smoothly.
SPECIAL TOOL Socket wrench
If there is a problem,
↓
Replace rack-and-pinion steering.
If there is no problem:
↓
Carry out rework.

  Reworking     
12 Caulk adjustment screw (1) at 3 points (arrows D) (120 degrees apart) using a center punch and also mark position relative to steering gear housing (2) with a colored mark (arrow A).    
13 Carefully press new rubber plug (5) into adjustment screw (1).    
14 Install boot (4). Model 205, 213, 238 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)

15 Detach rack-and-pinion steering from mount of steering gear housing.    
16 Install rack-and-pinion steering. Model 205, 213 with code M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)
