Remove/Install Multiplate Clutch Of Rear Axle Differential - AR35.31-P-0002MFA

Do not pour transmission oil into beverage bottles.

REMOVING Remove     
1 Drain rear axle differential oil.

2 Remove propeller shaft.   AR41.10-P-0050MFA
3 Remove differential lock actuator motor.   AR35.40-P-7401MFC 
4 Remove screw/bolts (1 to 5).    
5 Detach clutch unit (6) from outer plate carrier (7) and remove downward. NOTES Carefully release clutch unit (6), e.g. using a screwdriver or an assembly lever (arrows).
Do not damage sealing surfaces.
Otherwise, leaks may occur.
 
6 Remove retaining ring (8).    
7 Remove support disk (9) from inner plate carrier (10).    
8 Remove plate package (11) from inner plate carrier (10).    
CLEAN Clean     
9 Clean sealing surfaces at clutch cover (14) and at differential (13). NOTES Do not use sharp-edged tools.
The sealing surfaces may be damaged and leaks
may occur otherwise.
IMPORTANT The sealing surfaces must be free of dust and grease.
Assembly cleaner

10 Clean clutch area in differential (13) with lint-free rag. NOTES Do not introduce any additional contamination into the clutch area.
Otherwise, the oil ducts will become blocked and malfunctions will occur.
 
INSTALLING Install     
11 Slide new plate package (11) onto inner plate carrier (10).    
REFER TO CAPACITIES & SPECIFICATIONS Hypoid gear oils SAE 75 W-85 (specification 235.15) IMPORTANT Moisten plate package (11) with hypoid gear oil.
IMPORTANT Observe order of plate package (11):
Outer plate with corrugated spring
Internally toothed plate
Outer plate with corrugated spring
Internally toothed plate
Outer plate with corrugated spring
Internally toothed plate
Outer plate with corrugated spring
Internally toothed plate
Outer plate with corrugated spring
Internally toothed plate
Outer plate with corrugated spring

12 Slide support disk (9) onto inner plate carrier (10).    
13 Position clutch unit (6) in workshop press. IMPORTANTCommercially available devices/tools

14 Press plate package (11) including support disk (9) onto pressure disk (12) (arrows A). NOTES Do not exceed a preload of 500 N.
Otherwise, the support disk (9), plate package (11) and pressure disk (12) will be damaged.

15 Attach retaining ring (8). Select the largest possible retaining ring (8) that can be attached from the repair kit.  
16 Remove clutch unit (6) from workshop press. IMPORTANTCommercially available devices/tools

17 Align outer plates of plate package (11) with each other (arrow B).    
18 Apply sealant to sealing surface of differential (13).
Notes on application of flange sealants to seal major assemblies
IMPORTANT Apply sealant only along the specified lines (arrow C) in the form of a bead with height of 1.5 mm and width of 2.0 mm (±1.0 mm).
Process the sealant within a period of 10 minutes.
Do not spread the sealant bead.
Use only the sealant listed in the repair products.
Install component parts within a period of 10 minutes after sealant application.

19 Install clutch unit (6) in outer plate carrier (7). NOTES Do not use a rubber hammer or similar tool to install the clutch unit (6).
Otherwise, the clutch unit (6) and outer plate carrier (7) will be damaged.
The outer plates must thread into the outer plate carrier (7) in the correct position.
 
20 Tighten screws (1 to 5) slightly by hand. IMPORTANT Replace screws (1 to 5).  
Notice  Tighten screws (1 to 5) in numerical order.   AH00.00-P-0020-01A
21 Notes on threaded connections fastened using a tightening angle-based tightening process TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, housing cover at front/side to rear axle differential *BA35.31-P-1003-07A 
22 Install differential lock actuator motor.   AR35.40-P-7401MFC 
23 Install propeller shaft.   AR41.10-P-0050MFA
24 Pour in rear axle differential oil.

25 Perform adaptation of multiplate clutch of rear axle differential.
