Check Hydraulic Valve Clearance Compensating Elements - AR05.00-P-2010MFC

CAUTION Risk of injury  to skin and eyes due to handling of engine oil. Risk of poisoning  caused by swallowing engine oil Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.
Do not fill engine oil into beverage containers.

WARNING Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Check and correct engine oil level.    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP18.00-P-1812MFA
WARNING Risk of burn injuries,  suffocation and poisoning when working on the exhaust system and the components connected to it. Risk of suffocation and risk of poisoning caused by inhalation of gaseous and solid components of the exhaust. Risk of poisoning  caused by skin contact with solid components of the exhaust. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses. Use the extraction system. Move people out of the hazard area. AS49.00-Z-0001-01A
2 Warm up engine to normal operating temperature and switch it off. IMPORTANT Check hydraulic valve play compensation elements only when engine is at normal operating temperature.  
3 Remove cylinder head cover.   AR01.20-P-5014MFC
4 Install hold-down tool of holding device. SPECIAL TOOL Holding device Fig 1
5 Turn engine at center bolt of crankshaft in direction of engine rotation until cam of camshaft is pointing upwards at hydraulic valve play compensation element to be checked. NOTES Do not turn engine against direction of engine rotation.
Engine damage can occur otherwise.
 
INSPECT Check     
6 Check roller-type rocker arm (1) for contact with respective cam. If the roller-type rocker arm (1) does not make contact with the cam,

Replace hydraulic valve play compensation element.

7 Press down roller-type rocker arm (1) using suitable drift (2) and check hydraulic valve play compensation element. NOTES Do not use a steel tool.
Otherwise the roller-type rocker arm (1) will be damaged.
IMPORTANT It must not be possible to press together hydraulic valve play compensation element with normal force of the hand and this must only happen very slowly where high pressure is applied.
If the pressure drops too quickly

Replace hydraulic valve play compensation element.

    If several valve clearance compensating elements are defective,

Check oil pressure.

8 Install in the reverse order.
