Replace Steering Shaft Boot - AR46.10-P-0621VA

MODEL 171 with ENGINE 113, 272 

MODEL 172 with ENGINE 152, 276, 651

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
NOTES Notes on self-locking nuts and Bolts   AH00.00-N-0001-01A
1 Extend or pull out adjustable steering column fully    
2 Deactivate easy entry/exit Model 171 with code (275) Memory package (driver seat, steering column, mirrors), AR54.30-P-1000-02EDV
    Model 172 with code (275) Memory package for electrically adjustable front seats
NOTES If the vehicle is equipped with the easy entry and exit feature, this will have to be deactivated first Otherwise, the driver seat (with model 171) and steering wheel move to a different position when the driver door is opened or closed. If the SPECIAL TOOL holding device is installed, the upper frame is damaged when the steering wheel is adjusted.

3 Turn steering wheel to central position (front wheels in straight ahead position) and secure with the retaining device NOTES On a disengaged steering coupling (25) the steering wheel should not be turned because the spiral contact coil will be destroyed.

4 Open engine hood   AR88.40-P-1000V
5 Unclip electrical line of O2 probe or oxygen sensor from line bracket (1) and remove screw (2a) Except model 172.403/475  
6 Raise vehicle with vehicle lift   AR00.60-P-1000V
7.1 Remove lower bottom sections of soundproofing Model 172.4 with diesel engine AR94.30-P-5300W
7.2 Remove lower engine compartment paneling Model 171 AR61.20-P-1105V
    Model 172.4 with gasoline engine AR61.20-P-1105W
8 Remove Bolts (2b) and remove heat shield (2) downwards    
9 Unscrew Bolt (25a) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.10-P-1001-01E 
10 Pull the lower steering shaft (80a) upward to extract it from the steering coupling (25.) NOTES Do not use force (hammer blows, excessive leverage) as otherwise the lower steering shaft (80a) will be damaged. The lower steering shaft (80a) is sensitive to force exposure from the side.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Rotate the rack-and-pinion steering into the center position.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Insert lower steering shaft (80a) fully into the steering coupling (25); pay attention to the studs of the steering coupling (25) and groove of the lower steering shaft (arrows).

11 Detach the locking plate (25f) from the steering coupling (25), while doing so use a suitable tool to lift up the retaining tab IMPORTANT The locking plate (25f) is not available as a replacement part.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Insert a new self-locking nut in the existing locking plate (25f). Push on the locking plate (25f) until the retaining tab latches into the steering coupling (25).
 
12 Pull boot (3) out of firewall and remove from lower steering shaft (80a) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Grease boot (3) on the steering column tube in the area of the sealing surface and insert. Ensure that the continuous groove guarantees correct sealing.

13 Install in the reverse order
