DANGER Risk of explosion  caused by fuel igniting, risk of poisoning caused by inhaling and swallowing fuel as well as risk of injury to eyes and skin caused by contact with fuel. No fires, sparks, open flames or smoking. Pour fuels into suitable and appropriately marked containers only.
Wear protective clothing when handling fuel.

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Set selector lever to position "N" and release parking brake    
2 Turn front wheels to straight-ahead position and secure steering wheel with holding device NOTES The steering wheel must not be turned when detaching steering coupling.
Otherwise the clock spring contact will be destroyed.

9 Remove front components of exhaust system   AR49.10-P-7100RKC
10 Detach front diagonal struts INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only tighten the screw/bolts for the diagonal struts when the vehicle is standing with its wheels on the ground.
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, front diagonal strut to front axle carrier

11 Remove screws/bolts (2) and remove bulkhead (1) at the upper center    
12 Disconnect electrical connections from engine wiring harness (3) on ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10).    
13 Expose engine wiring harness (3) between ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) and engine    
14 Disconnect coolant hose (4)    
15 Detach vacuum hoses (5) on charge air manifold (6) and place to one side    
16 Detach purge line (7) on check valve (8) and place to one side    
17 Disconnect coolant hose (9) on the right, coolant hose on the left (10)    
18 Remove coolant hose (11)   AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
19 Disconnect coolant hose (12) from coolant line (13) and place to one side    
20 Relieve fuel pressure over diagnostic socket   AR07.03-P-1460-01RKC
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Cap on diagnostic socket *BA07.03-P-1005-01G 
SPECIAL TOOL Pressure hose Figure
21 Disconnect fuel hose (14) at fuel line (15) and close off openings using suitable grommets TORQUE SPECIFICATION Union nut, fuel hose to fuel line *BA07.03-P-1004-01G

22 Clamp off hose (16) and disconnect hose (16) at radial piston pump (17) SPECIAL TOOL Clamp Fig 13
23 Remove nut (19), disconnect refrigerant line (18) and close off openings using suitable grommets INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Install new sealing rings.
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, refrigerant line to expansion valve

24 Detach coolant hose (20) from coolant circulation pump (M13/5)    
25 Secure radiator against falling down    
26 Raise vehicle   AR00.60-P-1000TX
27 Detach screw/bolts (22), disconnect refrigerant line (21) from condenser and close off openings using suitable grommets INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Install new sealing rings.
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, line to condenser

28 Unclamp oil hoses (23) and disconnect from engine oil cooler (24) IMPORTANT Collect escaping engine oil in a suitable container.

29 Disconnect oil lines (25) at connection points (26) and close off openings using suitable grommets INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Install new sealing rings.  
30 Detach wheel-and-tire assembly at the front

31 Remove fender liner in front fender   AR88.10-P-1300RK
32.1 Relieve pressure in front axle ABC system Engine 279 in model 231.### ## up to 021273
with code 487 (Active Body Control (ABC))
IMPORTANT Catch hydraulic fluid in a suitable container.

33 Separate pressure line (27) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Union nut, connecting point for line to valve unit on front axle to line for hydraulic pump *BA32.50-P-1006-01C 
34 Disconnect coolant hose (28) from coolant pump (29)    
35 Unplug electrical connections (30) at electric power steering actuator motor (A91m1)    
36 Unclip electrical line (31) at front axle carrier (32) and place electrical line (31) to one side    
37 Unplug electrical line (33) on fan (34) and place to one side    
38 Detach coolant hose (35) on low-temperature circuit additional engine radiator (36)    
39 Disconnect steering coupling   AR46.10-P-8000RK
40 Remove screw/bolt (38) and bracket (37)    
41 Remove heat shield (39) from transmission (40)    
42 Disconnect connector (41)    
43 Disconnect electrical connection (42) at transmission oil pump electric motor (M42)    
44 Disconnect electrical connection (43) at intelligent servo module for DIRECT SELECT (A80)    
45 Unclip electrical line (44) along the transmission (40) and place to one side    
46 Unscrew screw/bolt (46) and remove cover (45) from firewall through-connection    
47 Remove nuts (47) and remove electrical line (48) from stud bolt and place to one side TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, positive line to through plating on firewall *BA54.15-P-1010-01A 
48 Disconnect ground line (49) at frame floor assembly TORQUE SPECIFICATION Right front frame floor assembly ground point *BA00.19-P-1003-01A 
49 Remove screw/bolts on front axle suspension strut below TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, suspension strut for front axle to spring control arm *BA32.25-P-1002-04N 
50 Remove front axle rpm sensors and expose electrical lines TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking bolt, rpm sensor on front axle to steering knuckle *BA42.30-P-1001-01A 
51 Remove front axle brake caliper and fix in place on vehicle with the attached brake lines IMPORTANT The brake linings remain in the brake calipers. AR42.10-P-0070RK
52 Disconnect upper ball joint for transverse control arm on steering knuckle TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, upper ball joint for upper transverse control arm to steering knuckle *BA33.20-P-1006-01S 
53 Support front axle carrier using the lifting platform   AR01.10-P-2500-01A
54 Remove engine crossmember with rear engine mount on frame floor assembly   AR22.10-P-1180RKC
55 Detach drive shaft from transmission output flange   AR41.10-P-0050RK
56 Remove screw/bolts (50) for cooler fastening console at front axle carrier TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, front axle carrier to cooler mounting console *BA33.10-P-1002-01O 
57 Remove front axle carrier screw/bolt (51) at longitudinal member TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, front axle carrier to longitudinal member *BA33.10-P-1001-01O 
58 Install in the reverse order    
59 Fill and bleed ABC system Engine 279 in model 231
with code 487 (Active Body Control (ABC))

60 Pour in coolant and ventilate engine cooling system   AR20.00-P-1142-04A

INSPECT Check     
DANGER Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
64 Carry out an engine test run, checking the engine for proper operation and leaktightness
