Function requirements in general 

IMPORTANT The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the circuit 15 status to the adaptive damping system control unit via suspension CAN 1.

Adaptive damping system (ADS), general 

The adaptive damping system alters the damping characteristics of the dampers to match the selected driving style damping mode and the road surface condition. This improves driving safety and driving comfort.

The ADS system is made up of the following component functions:

IMPORTANT The powertrain control unit sends the "drivetrain operational" signal to the adaptive damping system control unit via suspension CAN 1.

Recording of driving condition 

The driving condition is defined through the following variables:

The following sensors record the vehicle motion and vehicle body acceleration:

The adaptive damping system control unit reads in the signals of the body acceleration sensors as well as the left front wheel acceleration sensor and the right front wheel acceleration sensor directly.

The vehicle's longitudinal acceleration and lateral acceleration is recorded by the turn rate, lateral and longitudinal acceleration sensor. The data of the yaw rate sensor for lateral and longitudinal acceleration are read in by the ESP® control unit via the vehicle dynamics CAN and are sent to the adaptive damping system control unit via suspension CAN 1. The ESP® control unit also sends information on the wheel speeds, brake status and the braking torque to the adaptive damping system control unit via suspension CAN 1 as well as to the ME-SFI [ME] control unit and dual-clutch transmission control unit via suspension CAN 1, the AMG Gateway control unit and the drive CAN. This information is used for computation of the vehicle speed and the vehicle body acceleration.

The active damping system control unit also receives the following information over chassis CAN 1, which is used for calculating the optimum damping level/damping force at each damper:

Select damping mode 

Depending in the selected transmission mode, the damping is set correspondingly harder or softer.

By operating the DYNAMIC SELECT switch in the left lower control panel, the driver can select between four preconfigured transmission modes and an individual transmission mode. Depending on the selected transmission program, one of the following settings is activated for the suspension:

The left lower control panel sends the status of the DYNAMIC SELECT switch to the ESP® control unit via the Drive Unit CAN, Drive Unit control unit, AMG FlexRay, AMG Gateway control unit and suspension CAN 1.

The adaptive damping system control unit receives the corresponding request and generates the required actuation signals for the actuators.

The selected transmission mode is displayed in the instrument cluster. The current transmission mode settings are also briefly shown in the Audio/COMAND display.

The adaptive damping system control unit sends information on the selected drive program to the head unit and to the instrument cluster via suspension CAN 1, the AMG Gateway control unit and the user interface CAN. The head unit generates the corresponding image data and sends a switch-on request to the Audio/COMAND display via telematics CAN. The image data is transmitted via the high-speed video link to the Audio/COMAND display.

IMPORTANT After switching on the ignition, the Comfort damping stage is activated.

Additional function requirements for damper adjustment 

Damping adjustment 

The adaptive damping system control unit uses the input signals (driving condition) to determine the ideal damping stage in each case and then actuates the following components directly:

Implementation of the continuous damping adjustment is realized using twin-tube gas-operated shock absorbers. The damping valve units are mounted directly in the damper on the piston rod.
