The "circuit 15 ON" status is sent by the electronic ignition lock control unit over the chassis CAN 1.
Adaptive damping system (ADS), general
The adaptive damping system alters the damping characteristics of the dampers to match the selected driving style damping mode and the road surface condition. Pressing the AMG suspension button enables a switch to be made between a sporting or a comfortable suspension tuning. The suspension tuning is split up into the following suspension modes:
- Comfort "C"
- Sport "S"
- Sport PLUS "S+"
The ADS system is made up of the following component functions:
- Record function sequence for driving condition
- Select function sequence for damping mode
- Function sequence, shock absorber adjustment
Record additional function requirements for driving condition
- Drive train operational
- Vehicle speed > 0 km/h
Record function sequence for driving condition
The driving condition is defined through the following variables:
- Wheel acceleration and damper speed
- Vehicle body acceleration (chassis movement)
- Vehicle longitudinal and lateral acceleration
- Steering angle
The following sensors record the vehicle motion and vehicle body acceleration:
- Left front body lateral acceleration sensor
- Right front body lateral acceleration sensor
- Right rear body lateral acceleration sensor
The adaptive damping system control unit reads in the signals of the listed sensors directly.
The vehicle's longitudinal acceleration and lateral acceleration is recorded by the turn rate, lateral and longitudinal acceleration sensor. The data from the turn rate, lateral and longitudinal acceleration sensor are read in by the Electronic Stability Program control unit over the vehicle dynamics CAN and sent by the adaptive damping system control unit to the chassis CAN 1. The Electronic Stability Program control unit also sends information on the wheel speeds, brake status and the braking torque over the chassis CAN 1 to the adaptive damping system control unit, the ME-SFI [ME] control unit and over the drive train CAN to the dual clutch transmission control unit. This information is used for computation of the vehicle speed and the probable chassis movement.
The active damping system control unit also receives the following information over chassis CAN 1, which is used for calculating the optimum damping level/damping force at each damper:
- Steering wheel angle and steering wheel velocity, recorded by the steering wheel angle sensor, provided by the steering column tube module control unit
- Drive type from ME-SFI [ME] control unit
- Vehicle speed from rpm sensors
Select function sequence for damping mode
Pressing the AMG suspension button enables a switch to be made in 3 stages between a sporting or a comfortable suspension tuning.
The signal is read in directly by the AMG gateway control unit, and a request sent over the chassis CAN 1 to the adaptive damping system control unit.
The adaptive damping system control unit receives the corresponding request and generates the required actuation signals for the actuators.
Where the Sport PLUS "S+" mode has been selected, the two light emitting diodes (LEDs) integrated into the AMG chassis button light up. If Sport "S" is selected, only the left LED and lights up and for Comfort "C" both are off.
The adaptive damping system control unit sends the request to actuate these LEDs over the chassis CAN 1 to the AMG gateway control unit, which then actuates the LEDs in the AMG chassis button.

Function sequence, shock absorber adjustment
The input signals are used by the adaptive damping system control unit to determine each ideal damping stage and directly actuates the following components accordingly:
- Left front axle damping valve unit
- Right front axle damping valve unit
- Left rear axle damping valve unit
- Right rear axle damping valve unit
Implementation of the continuous damping adjustment is realized using twin-tube gas-operated shock absorbers. The damping valve units are mounted directly in the damper on the piston rod.
