Display elements
Instrument cluster, general
The instrument cluster notifies the driver of all dynamic and static driving conditions as well as about the current condition of the systems installed in the vehicle. In the event of faulty vehicle functions or functions relevant to safety, corresponding warnings are issued via the instrument cluster.
To convey the information to the driver the instrument cluster is equipped with the following displays:
- Permanent displays (e.g. vehicle speed, engine speed, tank content)
- Indicator lamps (green, yellow or blue) (e.g. turn signals, high beams)
- Warning lamps (red) (e.g. coolant level, brake fluid level)
- Multifunction display (e.g. driver assistance systems, menu sequence)

As of 01.12.2018:
The instrument cluster multifunction steering wheel button group can be used to display various menu levels in the instrument cluster:
- The Home and Back button can be used to jump back from the menu or submenu to the next higher menu level. Via a long press of the "Home" and "Back" button it is possible to jump to the main menu.
- The finger navigation pad on the instrument cluster can be used to navigate in menus (right/left) or lists (up/down). Pressing the instrument cluster finger navigation pad enables the respective selection or pending messages to be confirmed.
An acoustic feedback takes place during the operation of the control elements in the instrument cluster multifunction steering wheel button group. The steering wheel electronics sends the status of the control elements via the steering wheel CAN, the steering column tube module control unit, the AMG FlexRay, the AMG gateway control unit and the user interface CAN to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster directly actuates the instrument cluster speaker.
Up to 30.11.2018:
The left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right multifunction steering wheel button group can be used to display various menu levels in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster:
- It is possible to scroll in the main menu using the system selection button.
- It is possible to scroll within a menu in the submenus or in lists using the scroll forward and back button.
- The "Back" button can be used to jump from the menu or submenu to the next higher menu level.
- The OK button can be used to confirm each selection or pending messages.
If cooling is required in vehicles with digital full display as of 01.12.2018, the instrument cluster reports this fact via the user interface CAN to the head unit, which actuates the digital instrument cluster full display fan motor (M4/12).

Function sequence for activate instrument cluster
The multifunction display of the instrument cluster is activated by waking up the user interface CAN, e.g. by:
- Unlocking the vehicle through radio frequency
- Driver door opened
- Change of circuit status for circuit 15
After bus idle, the instrument cluster remains active for t = 30 s. If a fault exists, this time is extended to t = 120 s.
Additional function requirements for indicator lamp test
- Terminal 15 ON
The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the terminal status of terminal 15 via suspension CAN 1, the AMG gateway control unit and the user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.
Function sequence for indicator lamp test
The indicator lamp test serves the function test of certain warning lamps and indicator lamps in the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster performs this test automatically each time circuit 15 is switched on.
The function of the following warning and indicator lamps is checked during the indicator lamp test:
- Fuel reserve indicator lamp
- Brake fluid and parking brake indicator lamp
- Seat belt warning lamp
- Parking brake indicator lamp
- Parking brake indicator lamp
- Supplemental restraint system indicator lamp
- Antilock brake system indicator lamp
- ESP®/ASR OFF warning lamp
- Electronic Stability Program warning lamp
- ESP SPORT indicator lamp
- Brake system warning lamp
- Coolant temperature warning lamp
- Engine diagnosis indicator lamp
- DISTRONIC warning lamp (with CODE 239 (DISTRONIC PLUS) or CODE 258 (COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST))
- Tire pressure monitor warning lamp (with code 475 (Tire pressure monitor))
- Power steering warning lamp
The indicator lamp test is terminated when the engine is started.
The function of the following indicator lamps is not checked:
- Left turn signal indicator light
- Right turn signal indicator light
- High beam indicator lamp
- Rear fog light indicator lamp (except CODE 460 (Canada version) and except CODE 494 (USA version))
- Standing lamps indicator lamp
- Low beam indicator lamp
