Function requirements, engine sound, general
- Engine running.
The engine sound function is divided into the following subfunctions:
- Function sequence for engine sound With Code 810 (Sound system)
The engine sound noises are always emitted through the speakers in the vehicle, irrespective of whether the head unit (A26/17) is switched on or off.
Engine sound, general
Due to the progress made in vehicle insulation, the engine and exhaust sound in the vehicle interior can no longer be optimally perceived, which in turn can limit the driving experience. To optimize the engine and exhaust noise in the vehicle interior, the sound range in the vehicle interior is supplemented by simulated sound components via the speaker system.

- Function sequence for engine sound except code 810 (Sound system) and except code 811 (Advanced sound system)
Function sequence for engine sound With Code 810 (Sound system)
The sound system amplifier control unit receives control signals over the CAN interface from the drive CAN (e.g. engine speed and engine load from ME-SFI [ME] control unit).
The sound system amplifier control unit evaluates the control signals and generates synthesized sound signals for the optimized engine and exhaust system sound in the vehicle interior. When the audio source is active the sound system amplifier control unit lays the synthesized sound signals over the audio source signals and emits the combined signals at the speakers. If no audio source is active, the sound system amplifier control unit emits the synthesized sound signals through the speaker system. The sound system amplifier control unit software distributes the synthesized sound signals to the individual speakers.
The speaker system contains the following speakers:
- Left front footwell woofer
- Right front footwell woofer
- Center instrument panel midrange speaker
- Rear woofer
- Left instrument panel tweeter
- Right instrument panel tweeter
- Left rear surround sound system midrange speaker
- Right rear surround sound system midrange speaker
- Left door midrange speaker
- Right door midrange speaker
Function sequence for engine sound With Code 811 (Advanced sound system)
The Advanced Sound System amplifier control unit receives control signals over the CAN interface from the drive CAN (e.g. engine speed and engine load from ME-SFI [ME] control unit).
The Advanced Sound System amplifier control unit evaluates the control signals and generates synthesized sound signals for the optimized engine and exhaust system sound in the vehicle interior. When the audio source is active the Advanced Sound System amplifier control unit lays the synthesized sound signals over the audio source signals and emits the combined signals at the speakers. If no audio source is active, the Advanced Sound System amplifier control unit emits the synthesized sound signals through the speaker system. The Advanced sound system amplifier control unit software distributes the synthesized sound signals to the individual speakers.
The speaker system contains the following speakers:
- Left front footwell woofer
- Right front footwell woofer
- Center instrument panel midrange speaker
- Center instrument panel tweeter
- Rear woofer (actuation via woofer amplifier)
- Left instrument panel tweeter
- Right instrument panel tweeter
- Left rear surround sound system midrange speaker
- Right rear surround sound system midrange speaker
- Left door midrange speaker
- Right door midrange speaker
Function sequence for engine sound except code 810 (Sound system) and except code 811 (Advanced sound system)
The Midline sound system amplifier control unit receives control signals via the CAN interface from the drive CAN (e.g. engine speed and engine load from ME-SFI [ME] control unit).
The Midline sound system amplifier control unit evaluates the control signals and generates synthesized sound signals for optimized engine and exhaust system sound in the vehicle interior. When the audio source is active, the Midline sound system amplifier control unit lays the synthesized sound signals over the audio source signals and emits the combined signals through the speakers. If no audio source is active, the Midline sound system amplifier control unit emits the synthesized sound signals through the speaker system. The Midline sound system amplifier control unit software distributes the synthesized sound signals to the individual speakers.
The speaker system contains the following speakers:
- Left front footwell woofer
- Right front footwell woofer
- Center instrument panel midrange speaker
- Left instrument panel tweeter
- Right instrument panel tweeter
- Left rear surround sound system midrange speaker
- Right rear surround sound system midrange speaker
