Function requirements for mobile phone system, general 

Mobile telephone system, general 

The functional scope of the mobile phone system is not only dependent on the vehicle equipment, but also on the mobile phone used and the settings on the mobile phone.

A distinction is made between the following 3 versions for the mobile phone system:

All variants use Bluetooth® technology for data transfer.

With basic telephony, the mobile phone is connected to the audio equipment via Bluetooth®. The mobile phone can be operated with the control components of the vehicle and the vehicle's hands-free system can be used. If the mobile phone and the audio equipment are Internet capable, then the telephone connection is also Internet capable.

During comfort telephony (with CODE 386 (Comfort telephony)), the connection to the mobile telephone network is also established over the multifunction antenna (exterior antenna) of the vehicle and the mobile phone is charged.

During telephony with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP), the transceiver integrated into the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) uses the multifunction antenna for access to the mobile telephone network. The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is Internet capable. This property can be used if the audio equipment supports Internet access and the mobile phone contract includes a data option.

Since the mobile phone during telephony with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP) is in a condition that is comparable to standby or flight mode, the mobile phone's rechargeable battery is only used to a small extent. If necessary, a charging cable for the mobile phone can be connected to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile).

The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can also be operated without a telephone, only with a Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card.

IMPORTANT Telephony with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP) requires equipment with CODE 386 (Comfort telephony). Instead of the mobile phone cradle (accessories), the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can be plugged into the Bluetooth® module.

IMPORTANT The mobile phone system is described here using basic telephony as an example. The special features of comfort telephony and telephony with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP) are summarized at the end of this document.

In order to be able to operate a Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone that is authorized on the audio equipment in the vehicle, the mobile phone must support the hands-free profile (HFP) 1.0 or higher.

The mobile phone system includes the following areas:

IMPORTANT A mobile phone authorized on the audio equipment can also be used as a modem for access to the Internet and as a playback device as part of the Bluetooth® Audio setup, cf. the documents "Internet access, function" and "Audio mode, function".

Bluetooth® 

Using Bluetooth®, it is possible to connect modern communication devices such as personal digital assistants (PDA) or notebooks to the mobile phone system quickly and easily. Bluetooth® is a worldwide open standard for connecting Bluetooth® devices (e.g. mobile phone) wirelessly and is based on radio technology in the 2.4 GHz range. One advantage of Bluetooth®, in addition to the wide availability of Bluetooth® devices, is the uncomplicated and spontaneous connection of Bluetooth® devices. The extremely high data security (128-bit encoding) and the relatively limited radius (approx. 10 m) for this type of Bluetooth® connection are what make the use of Bluetooth® in the vehicle interesting.

The audio unit can integrate the latest-generation mobile phones into the vehicle hierarchy via the Bluetooth® interface of the mobile phone and the Bluetooth® antenna. The audio equipment automatically searches for the last two connected mobile phones and connects to the mobile phone which responds first.

IMPORTANT With CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP) a search is initially made for the last two connected SIM Access Profile (SAP) telephones, with CODE 386 (Comfort telephony) except CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP) a search is first made for a mobile phone in the mobile phone cradle (accessories).

If the mobile phone is not automatically connected to the audio equipment or if the audio equipment is to be establish a connection to another mobile phone, then the connection must be made manually via the telephone base function. Authorized telephones can be selected from a list. Non-authorized telephones must be authorized first.

IMPORTANT SAP telephones (with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP)) are kept in a separate list. Up to 15 mobile phones and up to 15 SAP telephones can be authorized at the same time. If more telephones are authorized, the oldest data records in each case will be overwritten. Detailed information on authorization is available in the respective operator's manual.

Switch on/off characteristics 

A mobile phone operated via Bluetooth® is switched on and off on the mobile phone itself. A mobile phone operated with Bluetooth® processes the switch-on signal internally in the mobile phone. If configured on the mobile phone and the phone transmits the status, the Personal Identification Number (PIN) prompt only appears on the mobile phone display. PIN entry is made on the mobile phone only. The reception status is received by the mobile phone's antenna.

The display of the PIN and the reception status as well as the signals of the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally in the mobile phone. After logging into the mobile telephone network provider's mobile phone network, a display is shown on the mobile phone display and the Audio/COMAND display.

The mobile phone's switch-off signal is processed internally in the mobile phone. If the rechargeable battery of the mobile phone is empty, the mobile phone is also switched off. This process also runs internally in the mobile phone.

Call signal 

The audio equipment receives the call signal over the Bluetooth® antenna from the mobile phone.

The audio equipment transmits the call tone via direct lines to the speaker system or, in vehicles with CODE 810 (Sound system) or CODE 811 (Advanced sound system), via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, which amplifies the signals and transmits them to the speaker system.

IMPORTANT If the mobile phone supports "In-band ringing", the mobile phone ring tone is emitted via the speakers, otherwise the audio equipment's default ringing sound is used.

The audio equipment mutes the currently active audio source (e.g. in radio mode) (MUTE).

The call recognition is displayed by the audio equipment on the audio/COMAND display via a LVDS line.

IMPORTANT When "Tel" has been selected on the instrument cluster, the call recognition is indicated on the multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster receives the signals from the audio equipment via the interior CAN.

Establish, end, accept, reject or toggle call 

The function can be carried out using the following components:

If the mobile phone is not operated directly, the audio equipment transmits the control signals over the Bluetooth® antenna to the mobile phone. The audio equipment generates the displays corresponding to the control procedures and transmits them via LVDS line to the Audio/COMAND display.

IMPORTANT Toggling: In vehicles with CODE 512 (COMAND APS with DVD changer), with CODE 527 (COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)) or with CODE 528 (COMAND incl. DVD changer), calls that are received while a call is in progress are shown on the Audio/COMAND display (call waiting). The toggle function enables a change to be made between the calls shown on the Audio/COMAND display. Voice communication only exists for the respective active telephone connection, while other connections are put on hold. The toggling function is dependent on it being supported by the mobile phone. If the mobile phone does not support toggling, when another call is accepted the call active up until then is then terminated.

Mobile phone 

Operation on the mobile phone is internally processed and not forwarded to the audio equipment.

Telephone buttons or keypad on the audio equipment 

The control signals of the telephone keys or the keypad on the audio equipment are processed internally.

The buttons on the audio equipment provide the following control options, for example:

Audio/COMAND control panel 

The Audio/COMAND control panel control signals are sent via telematics CAN to the audio equipment.

The following options are available to the user for dialing a telephone number, for example:

By selecting the corresponding operating panels on the Audio/COMAND display, calls can be accepted or rejected and it is possible to switch between various calls (toggle).

Multifunction steering wheel button groups 

The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded to the "audio equipment" via the following route:

A call can be established or terminated in the following manner, for example:

Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (with CODE 512 (COMAND APS with DVD changer) or with CODE 527 (COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation))) 

When the VCS [SBS] is activated, a call can be established or accepted in a dialog with the voice control system.

IMPORTANT Only the call establishment and acceptance is possible via the VCS [SBS].

The hands-free system microphone group records the voice input (voice commands) and forwards this via a direct line to the COMAND controller unit.

The VCS [SBS] voice output is transmitted by the COMAND controller unit to the speaker system (except CODE 810 (Sound system) and CODE 811 (Advanced sound system)).

In vehicles with CODE 810 (Sound system) or CODE 811 (Advanced sound system) the COMAND controller unit transmits the voice output via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, which then outputs the signals via the speaker system.

The COMAND controller unit converts the voice commands into control signals.

Possible voice commands are, for example:

IMPORTANT The individual voice commands are listed in the "Linguatronic operator's manual".

Remote control (with CODE 816 (Entertainment remote control) Entertainment or with CODE 867 (SPLITVIEW)) 

The mobile phone system can be operated using the remote control. The infrared signals from the remote control are received by the COMAND controller unit via its integrated infrared interface.

Using the phone in hands-free mode 

The voice input of the outgoing telephone signals is recorded by the hands-free system microphone group and forwarded to the audio equipment. The audio equipment sends the signals via the Bluetooth® antenna to the mobile phone.

The audio equipment receives the incoming voice signals via the Bluetooth® antenna from the mobile phone and outputs them over the speaker system (except CODE 810 (Sound system) or CODE 811 (Advanced sound system)).

In vehicles with CODE 810 (Sound system) or CODE 811 (Advanced sound system), the audio equipment transmits the incoming voice signals via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, which amplifies the signals and transmits them to the speaker system.

Phone book 

The phone book contains the phone book entries stored in the audio equipment. The user can manage (view and delete) his contact data in the telephone book. The system can be provided with the stored information via the phone book entries and the connection established immediately.

The phone book is called up in the basic "Telephone" function via the "Name" menu item in the application field.

IMPORTANT The phone book for the mobile phone is downloaded in the background or updated in the audio equipment's phone book if the mobile phone supports the Bluetooth Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP). Phone Book entries can be loaded as "vCards" via Bluetooth® or via the USB electrical connector onto the audio equipment.

Address book (with CODE 512 (COMAND APS with DVD changer) or with CODE 527 (COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation))) 

The address book contains the address entries stored in the COMAND controller unit. Address-relevant mobile phone system applications can be directly started and supplied with the stored data via address book entries. The user can manage all the contact data in the address book (view, edit, add, delete and create). Address entries can only be removed by deleting individual entries or by deleting the entire address book.

Address book entries can also be copied as "vCards" from other external devices (e.g. PDA, notebook, etc.) or data media into the address book. "vCards" can be transferred into the address book as follows:

Address entries can contain the following:

The call can be established via the VCS [SBS] for each entry with a completed "Yomigana field" (with CODE 498 (Japan version)).

Read access is available to the phone book of the mobile phone when the mobile phone supports the PBAP profile.

Speed-dial list 

The speed dial list consists of up to ten telephone numbers to which phone book entries can be assigned with digits from 0 to 9. The Call list and Speed dial list menu entries enable the user to manage the entries.

The speed dial list is active only when the "Telephone" menu is active. Pressing the number on the keypad of the audio equipment for a longer period of time (approx. 2 s) dials up the telephone number stored and establishes a connection.

"Seamless switch" 

"Seamless Switch" provides the following functionality:

IMPORTANT With some Japanese mobile phones you can select how the mobile phone behaves if a connection is interrupted. If the "Switch off if connection is interrupted" setting has been selected, "Seamless Switch" cannot be activated because a brief connection interruption occurs.

Short Message Service (SMS) (except CODE 498 (Japan version)) 

The SMS application enables the user to manage his/her SMS messages (e.g. to read or delete them). For this, the SMS messages previously received on the mobile phone as well as the new SMS messages are forwarded to the "audio equipment".

IMPORTANT The SMS function with basic telephony requires the Message Access Profile (MAP) to be supported.

The following SMS functions are possible:

The SMS function consists of the following subfunctions:

Upload given SMS to audio equipment 

The mobile phone sends the SMS messages already stored on the mobile phone via the Bluetooth® antenna to the audio equipment.

IMPORTANT Under certain circumstances, loading SMS messages may take a long time. This may be because of the mobile phone or the number of SMS messages in the mobile phone.

Receive SMS 

The mobile phone sends the new incoming SMS messages via the Bluetooth® antenna to the audio equipment.

Call up the SMS application 

The SMS function for managing (e.g. reading or deleting) SMS messages is called up using the basic "Telephone" function via the "SMS" submenu in the function bar.

The "TEL" button control signals are processed internally by the audio equipment.

The Audio/COMAND control panel control signals are sent via the telematics CAN to the audio equipment.

The Audio-/COMAND display is actuated by the audio equipment via a low voltage differential signaling line.

Display SMS message 

The SMS content is displayed on the Audio/COMAND display. The audio equipment actuates the Audio/COMAND display via the low voltage differential signaling line.

Read out SMS (with CODE 512 (COMAND APS with DVD changer) or with CODE 527 (COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation))) 

SMS voice output is conducted via the vehicle speaker system.

Additional function requirements for Mercedes-Benz Contact (except CODE 494 (USA version) or CODE 498 (Japan version)) 

Mercedes-Benz Contact (except CODE 494 (USA version) or CODE 498 (Japan version)) 

The "Mercedes-Benz Contact" function provides user-friendly access to the services rendered by Mercedes-Benz Services by means of a fixed, reserved telephone book entry in the telephone book or in the address book of the "audio equipment" or the telephone book of the mobile phone. The "Mercedes-Benz Contact" function uses the hands-free system and supports the service acceptance process at the Service Center by voice communication with synchronous transfer of the vehicle data.

Function sequence for establishing telephone call, data transfer and terminating call with Service Center 

The fixed, reserved telephone book entry in the telephone book or in the address book of the "audio unit" or in the telephone book of the mobile phone is selected via one of the following components:

After an active call has been established to the Service Center, the user starts the data transfer. The data is transferred after the call has been established by actuating a number key on the keypad of the audio equipment.

For data transfer purposes, the audio equipment checks the kilometer reading and the maintenance computer information of the instrument cluster via the interior CAN.

In vehicles with CODE 527 (COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)) or with CODE 512 (COMAND APS with DVD changer), the map data is also transferred by the navigation module integrated in the audio equipment.

The data is transmitted by the audio equipment by means of Dual Tone Multiple Frequency (DTMF) tones to the service center in the same way as when the call has been established successfully. After the data has been transferred to the Service Center, the user can talk to an employee at the Service Center or the workshop. The transmitted data is then available to the employee.

Comfort telephony (with CODE 386 (Comfort telephony)) and telephony with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP) 

The mobile phone signals are sent and received via the multifunction antenna (vehicle external antenna). As of 15.07.2013, a connection is established via the mobile phone contact plate in the stowage compartment (telephone compartment) between the front seats. Up to 12.07.2013, a connection is established via the Bluetooth® module in the stowage compartment (telephone compartment) between the front seats.

A corresponding mobile phone cradle (accessories) is plugged into the mobile phone contact plate or the Bluetooth® module and the respective mobile phone is then inserted into the mobile phone cradle.

Comfort telephony exhibits the following special features:

Switch-on characteristics 

The mobile phone system is automatically switched on by switching on the audio equipment via a wake-up pulse from the audio equipment.

The switch-on signal is sent via the following path from the audio equipment to the mobile phone:

Personal Identification Number (PIN) query 

If configured on the mobile phone, the Personal Identification Number (PIN) is requested after the mobile phone has been switched on. The PIN prompt is shown by the audio equipment via LVDS line on the Audio/COMAND display as well as via interior CAN in the instrument cluster (when the Telephone menu is activated there). The PIN can be entered on the audio equipment.

Functions of mobile phone contact plate (as of 15.07.2013) 

The mobile phone contact plate fulfills the following functions:

Functions of Bluetooth® module (up to 31.05.2013) 

The Bluetooth® module performs the following functions:

The mobile phone contact plate or the Bluetooth® module receives the mobile phone signals from the mobile telephone network as follows:

The mobile phone contact plate or the Bluetooth® module forwards the mobile phone signals over the mobile phone cradle (accessories) to the mobile phone. As of 15.07.2013, the mobile phone sends the mobile phone signals as Bluetooth® signals to the Bluetooth® antenna. Internet signals can also be forwarded if the audio equipment and mobile phone support the function. The Bluetooth® antenna forwards the signals to the audio equipment. Up to 12.07.2013, the Bluetooth® module forwards the mobile phone signals via the Bluetooth® antenna to the audio equipment.

IMPORTANT The mobile phone system supports the Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile radio standard.

Telephony with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP) 

The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can be used in two different ways to make a call:

The mobile phone signals are sent and received via the multifunction antenna. Connection is established via the mobile phone contact plate (as of 15.07.2013) or via the Bluetooth® module (up to 12.07.2013) in the stowage compartment (telephone compartment) between the front seats. The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) is plugged into the mobile phone contact plate or the Bluetooth® module.

IMPORTANT The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can be removed from the Bluetooth® module by using a release button. The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) supports the SIM Access Profile (SAP).

IMPORTANT If necessary, the SAP telephone can be charged using a Universal Serial Bus (USB) connection to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile). To do this, the cover on the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) has to be removed.

IMPORTANT Under "Options", a ring tone can be selected for the respective SIM card or SAP telephone from a list of ring tones.

IMPORTANT If the audio equipment supports the function and the mobile phone contract includes a data option, the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can also be used as a modem for the Internet.

Telephony with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP) has the following special features:

Switch-on characteristics 

The mobile phone system is automatically switched on by switching on the audio equipment via a wake-up pulse from the audio equipment. The audio equipment sends the signal via the mobile phone contact plate (as of 15.07.2013) or the Bluetooth® module (up to 12.07.2013) to the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile).

PIN prompt 

A prompt for the PIN is shown after switching on the mobile phone if the SAP telephone is configured for this. The PIN prompt is shown by the audio equipment via LVDS line on the Audio/COMAND display as well as via interior CAN in the instrument cluster. The PIN can be entered on the audio equipment. The PIN of the SAP telephone or the SIM card can be stored so that it does not need to be entered again when switched on.

Connect SAP telephone 

SAP telephones must support the SIM Access Profile and be connected (authorized) once with the telephone module using Bluetooth® (SAP profile). Up to 15 SAP telephones can be authorized at the same time. After switching on the audio equipment, an automatic search is performed for the last two SAP telephones used in the vehicle, and the first one that responds is connected.

SAP telephones can only be automatically connected if the following requirements are met:

If another SAP telephone is to be connected, then the connection has to be interrupted first and then the corresponding SAP telephone manually connected by selecting it from the list of SAP telephones.

The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) receives the mobile phone signals as follows from the mobile telephone network:

The telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) routes the mobile phone signals via the Bluetooth® antenna to the audio equipment.

IMPORTANT The Bluetooth® interface of the Bluetooth® module (up to 12.07.2013) is not used for telephony with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP).

SMS 

State of the art mobile phones come with two memories for SMS messages: one on the telephone and one on the SIM card. As long as the mobile phone is used for telephony with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP), incoming SMS messages in the mobile phone can only be stored on the SIM card.

Storing incoming SMS messages on the SIM card can have two consequences:

Software update 

The USB connector on the telephone module with Bluetooth® (SAP profile) can also be used for installing software updates, e.g. with a USB memory (USB stick). The update files and the procedure are made available to the customer on the Internet.
