Audio/COMAND Function - GF82.85-P-0014RFM

Model 253 (except 253.99)

as of model year 2020

Function requirements for Audio/COMAND, general

Audio/COMAND, general

The head unit (A26/17) is the central control unit for the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle.

The head unit acts as a gateway. The head unit routes the signals from the user interface CAN (CAN HMI) to the components of the telematics CAN (CAN A), and the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST), thereby setting up the communications interface.

The head unit communicates with the following control units over MOST:

All the displays and menu representations for the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) are generated by the head unit when a smartphone is not integrated.

IMPORTANT Some applications can also be shown on the instrument cluster (A1), e.g.: Audio, telephone, navigation.

Via Ethernet, the head unit receives software uploads for all MOST subscribers from the diagnostic connector (X11/4) connected to the diagnostic unit.

The head unit contains the following subfunctions, which are described separately:

The head unit supports the following subfunctions, which are described separately:

The head unit supports the following subfunctions, which are described below:

Additional function requirements for revitalization

Revitalization

The revitalization functions should enhance the well-being and health of the vehicle occupants. Operation is through the head unit. The following revitalization functions are available:

Additional function requirements for seat kinetics

Seat kinetics

Seat kinetics use minor movements of the seat cushion and seat backrest on the driver's seat to increase or ease the strain on the driver's muscles and joints.

IMPORTANT The lumbar support is also actuated cyclically.

Comfort control (with code PBP (ENERGIZING Package), or with code PBR (ENERGIZING Package Plus))

Comfort control combines several comfort functions and groups them into programs. The programs support the driver, for example, in monotonous driving situations with the aid of energizing programs and, in emotionally-stressful situations, with relaxing programs.

To implement the programs, comfort control actuates the following systems depending on the equipment installed and the selected program:

Comfort control is performed by the head unit. With code 362 (HERMES LTE), the comfort control assistant is also available as a digital service. From the available data about the given driving situation (e.g. time, driving time, weather conditions) and, where applicable, fitness trackers linked to the Mercedes me connect user account, the comfort control assistant will initiate programming recommendations. Program recommendations can be shown through the head unit's notification center on the Audio/COMAND display.

Gesture recognition system (with code 77B (contactless gesture control at the front))

The hand motion sensor (B84/15) in the overhead control panel records the driver's and front passenger's hand movements using a camera, and converts the recognized gestures into operation signals.

The gesture detection system provides the following functions:

The gesture recognition system whether the driver or the front passenger carries out the hand movement.

The gesture recognition system can be switched on and off and configured via a menu in the head unit.

Integration of smart phones (with code 14U (Smartphone integration package))

The head unit enables the integration of smart phones. In order to ensure that the content is prepared in a vehicle-compatible way, only smartphone applications (apps) that have been developed for the following integration standards are supported:

To be able use the smartphone applications, the smartphone must be connected to USB port 2 (A90/5x2) (except code 897 (Wireless mobile phone charging), and except code 899 (Multifunction telephony)) of the multimedia connection unit (A90/5), or to the front center console USB port (X115/5) (with code 897 (Wireless mobile phone charging), or with code 899 (Multifunction telephony)), and the required integration standard must be selected. Automatic connection can also be selected in the settings.

IMPORTANT With the Android Auto integration standard, a Bluetooth® connection between the smartphone and the head unit is required as well as the connection via USB (Universal Serial Bus) (the connection is established automatically).

If a smartphone is connected and the integration standard Android Auto or CarPlay is activated, the head unit is switched to a special operating mode ("Integration mode"). When the integration mode is used, the smartphone apps are shown on the Audio/COMAND display and they can be operated using the head unit controls.

When smartphone integration is active with a smartphone, there are the following restrictions:
