DANGER Risk of explosion  from explosive gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns  from swallowing battery electrolyte. Risk of injury  through burns to skin and eyes from battery acid or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries No fires, sparks, open flames or smoking. Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing and glasses. Only pour battery acid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. AS54.10-Z-0001-01A
DANGER Risk of injury  to skin and eyes suffering scalding from contact with hot coolant spray. Risk of poisoning  from swallowing coolant. Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90 °C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage containers.
Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Set DIRECT SELECT gear selector switch to position "N" and release parking brake    
2 Open engine hood and raise to vertical position   AR88.40-P-1000GG
3 Detach ground line from battery   AR54.10-P-0003GW
4 Remove left and right air filter housing Model 463 with engine 279

6 Remove radiator for low-temperature water circuit   AR09.41-P-6935GW
7 Remove oil cooling line from power steering system Model 463 with engine 279 as of model year 2013 AR46.25-P-3010GW
8 Detach left and right CATs at pipe transition piece; to do this remove screw/bolts (1) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, clamp for pipe adapter to exhaust gas turbocharger *BA09.40-P-1012-01V 
9 Detach oil lines (2) at intermediate housing TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, oil line return line to intermediate housing for oil lines *BA18.30-P-1003-01K 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, oil line feed line to intermediate housing for oil lines *BA18.30-P-1001-01K 
10 Detach refrigerant line (3) at expansion valve (10) and close off openings. INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace the sealing ring on the refrigerant line (3).
IMPORTANT Close off openings using SPECIAL TOOL stop plugs and lay refrigerant line (3) on the engine.
 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut on expansion valve *BA83.30-P-1001-01C

11 Remove screw/bolt (4) at bracket of refrigerant line (3)    
12 Extract oil from expansion reservoir of power steering pump SPECIAL TOOL Hand pump Fig 7
13 Detach high pressure hydraulic line (5) at power steering pump (6) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Engine 279.982 in model 463.274/275 High- pressure expansion hose to power steering pump *BA46.30-P-1001-01B 
14 Detach feed line (7) on the power steering pump (6)    
15 Remove air-water duct   AR83.10-P-9998GW
16 Remove vacuum line of brake booster   AR43.10-P-0360GW
17 Disconnect purge line (11)    
18 Detach coolant hose (18) at coolant pump    
19 Detach coolant hose (19) at coolant line    
20 Detach coolant hose (20) on coolant connection    
21 Detach coolant hose (21) on heat exchanger    
22 Detach coolant hose (22) on thermostat housing    
23 Detach coolant hose (23) on thermostat housing   AR09.41-P-1311-01AL
24 Detach starter electrical lines and alternator at engine compartment prefuse box (12), expose and lay on the engine    
25 Pull locking lever outwards and disconnect electrical connections (13) on ME-SFI [ME] control unit    
26 Disconnect electrical lines (14)    
27 Expose engine wiring harness and place on engine    
28 Detach ground strap (15) from transmission   AR54.10-P-0003GW
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, ground line to transmission housing *BA27.40-P-1008-01E 
29 Disconnect electrical connection (16) and expose line    
30 Disconnect electrical connection (17) at controller unit    
31 Disconnect electrical connections on oxygen sensors and expose lines   AR07.04-P-0021MUD
32 Relieve fuel pressure at diagnostic socket   AR07.03-P-1460-01MUB
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Cap on diagnostic socket *BA07.03-P-1005-01G

33 Detach fuel line (8) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Union nut, fuel line to fuel distributor *BA07.03-P-1001-01G 
34 Detach oil lines (9) from oil cooler thermostat and seal using suitable stop plugs   AR27.10-P-0501-03GW

35 Support transmission with telescopic lifter and remove rear engine crossmember

NOTES Guide the tensioning strap under the transmission vent hose.
Otherwise the transmission vent hose will be pinched and damaged.
 
36 Detach propeller shaft at transmission   AR41.10-P-0050GW
NOTES Apply colored marking of the propeller shaft position to the transmission output flange.
The default installation position is created in this way during installation and drive train vibrations are avoided.
 
37 Install rear engine crossmember   AR22.10-P-4360MNF
38 Loosen engine mounts TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, front engine mount and bracket to frame *BA22.10-P-1003-01X 
39 Mount engine suspension lug on cylinder head IMPORTANT Take note of the screw/bolt diameter and screw/bolt length of the screw/bolts. Use screw/bolts M7x65.

40 Mount load tilter and boom crane on engine and raise engine somewhat    
41 Remove engine with transmission to the front NOTES Lift in and lift out engine carefully. Damage to the lines and assembly parts through getting caught in moving parts and impacts can occur otherwise.
IMPORTANT A tilt of the engine up to a max. of 30° should be maintained.
 
42 Install in the reverse order    
43 Read out fault memory using the diagnostic system and clear if necessary    
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS     AD00.00-P-2000-04A
DANGER Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
44 Carry out engine test run, checking the engine for leaktightness and proper operation
