Instrument cluster, general

The instrument cluster notifies the driver of all dynamic and static driving conditions as well as about the current condition of the systems installed in the vehicle. In the event of faulty vehicle functions or functions relevant to safety, corresponding warnings are issued via the instrument cluster.

To transmit the information to the driver, the following displays can be shown in the instrument cluster:

IMPORTANT Detailed information on the symbols for the warning and indicator messages can be found in a separate document.

Operation of the instrument cluster in model 205 as of 01.06.2018, in model 253 (except model 253 99) as of 01 06 2019 or in model 253 99:

IMPORTANT The available main menus and submenus depend on the vehicle equipment.

The instrument cluster makes the following functions possible:

Via the instrument cluster multifunction steering wheel button group (S163/1), different menu levels in the instrument cluster (A1) can be displayed:

IMPORTANT An acoustic feedback takes place during the operation of the control elements in the instrument cluster multifunction steering wheel button group. The steering wheel electronics sends the status of the control elements over the steering wheel CAN (CAN LR), steering column tube module control unit (N80), suspension FlexRay (Flex E), electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) and the user interface CAN (CAN HMI) to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster directly actuates the instrument cluster speaker.

Operation of instrument cluster in model 205 up to 31.05.2018 or in model 253 (except model 253.99) up to 31.05.2019:

Via the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111), different menu levels can be displayed in the instrument cluster:

Function sequence for activate instrument cluster

The multifunction display of the instrument cluster is activated by waking up the user interface CAN, e.g. by:

IMPORTANT After bus idle, the instrument cluster remains active for t = 30 s. If there is a fault, this time is extended to t = 120 s.

Additional function requirement for indicator lamp test (except for code 464 (Digital instrument cluster full display))

IMPORTANT The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the circuit 15 status to the instrument cluster via user interface CAN.

Function sequence for indicator lamp test (except for code 464 (Digital instrument cluster full display))

The indicator lamp test serves the function test of certain warning lamps and indicator lamps in the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster performs this test automatically each time circuit 15 is switched on.

The function of the following warning and indicator lamps is checked during the indicator lamp test:

IMPORTANT The indicator lamp test is terminated when the engine is started.

The function of the following indicator lamps is not checked:
