Remove/Install Rear Spring - AR32.20-P-0230XG

Model 463 as of model year 2019

WARNING Risk of injury  caused by pinching or crushing when working on springs or spring bodies that are under tension Use only approved tensioning devices; additionally screen off hazardous area if necessary. Check special tools for damage and proper operation (visual inspection). Wear protective gloves. AS00.00-Z-0001-01A
WARNING Risk of injury.  Moving parts can pinch, crush or, in extreme cases even sever extremities. No parts of the body or limbs should be within the operating area of mechanical components when moving components. AS00.00-Z-0009-01A

REMOVING Remove     
1 Remove shock absorbers (1) from rear axle.   AR32.25-P-0110XG 
2 Lower rear axle completely.    
3 Mark installation position of upper spring retainer (2), lower spring retainer (3) and rear axle spring (4) relative to body and to rear axle.    
4 Loosen stop buffers (5) in holes (arrows A) using a suitable tool and unscrew. In order to shorten the clamping span and to facilitate the removal of the rear axle springs (4).
IMPORTANT The stop buffer (5) remains loose inside the rear axle spring (4) until the rear axle spring (4) is removed.
 
5 Insert adapter plate (7) into lower mount on tensioning device (6). SPECIAL TOOL Tensioning device Fig 2

6 Insert adapter plate (8) into upper mount tensioning device (6). SPECIAL TOOL Tensioning device Fig 2

7 Install tensioning device (6) with adapter plates (7, 8) and clamp rear axle spring (4). IMPORTANT Clamp as many coils of the rear axle spring (4) as possible.

8 Remove rear axle spring (4) with attached tensioning device (6) and adapter plates (7, 8) SPECIAL TOOL Tensioning device Fig 2

9 Unclamp rear axle spring (4) and remove tensioning device (6) with adapter plates (7, 8). SPECIAL TOOL Tensioning device Fig 2

10 Remove stop buffer (5).    
INSPECT Check     
11 Check rear axle spring (4) for paint damage. When reinstalling the rear axle spring (4). If there is paint damage,

Repair the paint damage using a black touch-up paint pen.
 
12 Check rear axle spring (4) for wear and damage. If wear or damage is present.

Replace rear axle springs (4) in pairs.
 
13 Check upper spring retainer (2) or lower spring retainer (3) for wear and damage. If wear or damage is present.

Replace upper spring retainer (2) or lower spring retainer (3).
 
14 Check stop buffer (5) for wear and damage. If wear or damage is present.

Replace stop buffer (5).
 
15 If components bearing previously applied markings are replaced, transfer these markings to the new parts.    
CLEAN Clean     
16 Clean upper spring retainer (2), lower spring retainer (3), rear axle spring (4) and stop buffer (5). When reinstalling the components.  
17 Clean contact surfaces on body and on rear axle.    
INSTALLING Install     
18 Clamp rear axle spring (4) with tensioning device (6) and clamping plates (7, 8). IMPORTANT Observe the arrangement of the adapter plates (7, 8) on the tensioning device (6).
IMPORTANT Clamp as many coils of the rear axle spring (4) as possible.

19 Check installation position of upper spring retainer (2), lower spring retainer (3) and rear axle spring (4) relative to body and to rear axle based on markings applied, and align if necessary.    
20 Put stop buffer (5) loosely on lower spring retainer (3). IMPORTANT The stop buffer (5) is installed after the correct installation of the rear axle spring (4).  
21 Insert rear axle spring (4) and position on lower spring retainer (3).    
22 Unclamp rear axle spring (4) via tensioning device (6) and check correct installation position of spring ends on upper spring retainer (2) or lower spring retainer (3). The spring ends (arrows B, C) must lie completely on the upper spring retainer (2) or lower spring retainer (3).
If the installation position is not correct,

Correct installation position by re-clamping rear axle spring (4) with tensioning device (6).

23 Remove tensioning device (6) with adapter plates (7, 8). SPECIAL TOOL Tensioning device Fig 2

24 Screw in stop buffer (5) and tighten via holes (arrows A) using a suitable tool.    
25 Raise rear axle.    
26 Install shock absorbers (1) on rear axle.   AR32.25-P-0110XG 
INSPECT Check     
27 Check vehicle level at front and rear axles using electronic inclinometer.   AR40.20-P-0302XG
