Location

The ME-SFI [ME] control unit is located at the rear center of the engine.

Task

The ME-SFI control unit fulfills the following tasks:

The ME-SFI [ME] control unit also acts as the interface (gateway) between the connected CAN bus systems.

Controlling the basic engine functions

Reading in of sensors and signals

Input factors are read in by means of the following connections:

Evaluation of input factors

The input factors that have been read in are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor and the affected components are then actuated.

Output of signals and actuation of components

Initial parameter are output over the following connections:

IMPORTANT The front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) is the central interface (Gateway) for exchange of function-relevant data for control units which are connected to the various Control Area Network (CAN) bus systems.

Input factors and initial parameters for the following components are read in or output over direct lines by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit and are needed by the engine management

Body

The housing of the ME-SFI [ME] control unit is made out of diecast aluminum and the cover is made out of corrosion-proof sheet steel. The ME-SFI [ME] control unit is protected against water and dust. The inside contains the 32-bit measuring and control electronics for the engine management.

Power supply

The ME-SFI [ME] control unit is "circuit 30 fused" and also supplied with a voltage for ignition ON by "circuit 87 M4.

In the nominal operating voltage range there is both short-circuit protection and reversed polarity protection.

Power is supplied through several connectors connected over a number of parallel pins to relieve the electrical connections.

Ground connection

The "circuit 31" ground connection is made via several ground lines to the left major assembly compartment electronics ground point (W16/5).

IMPORTANT Information for partial function "no-load current shutoff" is documented in the function description "Engine OFF energy management function".

Variants

The variants of the engine management, for exampled country and exhaust variants, are activated with XD over the variant coding.

Replacement of the ME-SFI [ME] control unit is not necessary.
