DANGER Risk of explosion  caused by oxyhydrogen gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns  caused by swallowing battery acid. Risk of injury caused by burns to skin and eyes from battery acid or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking.
Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing and glasses. Only pour battery acid into suitable and appropriately marked containers.

3 Remove steering wheel IMPORTANT Place front wheels in straight-ahead position. AR46.10-P-0100P 
4 Remove instrument cluster (A1)   AR54.30-P-6015GM
5 Remove cover beneath dashboard (left)   AR68.10-P-1500GM
6 Remove EIS control unit (N73)   AR80.57-P-1000GM

8 Remove knee bolster IMPORTANT Only on model 463.246/249 as of end no. 141688 and model 463.271. AR68.10-P-3520G
9 Disconnect electrical connectors (3)    
10 Remove light switch module (S1)   AR54.25-P-3270GM
11 Remove screw (12) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.10-P-1007-03E 
12 Remove bolt (11) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.10-P-1008-03E 
13 Remove spacer tube (4)    
14 Remove upper bolts (7) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.10-P-1006-03E 
15 Undo lower screw (8) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.10-P-1005-03E 
16 Unscrew nut (2) IMPORTANT Remove screw (9) on center universal joint (1).  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.10-P-1014-03E 
17 Pry off center universal joint (1) from steering shaft (14)    
18 Remove steering column tube (5) towards vehicle interior IMPORTANT Do not damage rubber boot (10) when pulling out and inserting the steering shaft (14).
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Insert journal (13) of steering column tube (5) into bore of console (6).
 
19 Install in the reverse order    
20 Deactivate service mode in Telematic Alarm Identification on Demand IMPORTANT Only on model 463.243/244/245/250/309/322/323/332/333 with code (ET2) Tele-Aid - car telephone emergency call system, Model 463.247/248/254/270 up to 1.4.07 with code (ET2) Tele-Aid car telephone emergency call system AR82.95-P-0005-03GR

21 Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS, read out fault memory and erase if necessary   AD00.00-P-2000-04A
INSPECT Checking     
22 Perform function test of all previously removed parts    
23 Conduct a road test IMPORTANT Check turn signal cancellation during test drive: If the steering wheel is offset by more than one tooth, flawless turn signal cancellation is no longer guaranteed.
IMPORTANT Airbag indicator lamp: The SRS indicator lamp must not light up at full steering angle in both directions.
IMPORTANT Position of steering wheel: If the steering wheel is not on straight, offset it by a maximum of one tooth, in the event of a larger deviation:
 
Check and adjust toe on front axle. AR40.20-P-0323GG
