REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/Install     
DANGER Risk of explosion  caused by oxyhydrogen gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns  caused by swallowing battery acid. Risk of injury  caused by burns to skin and eyes from battery acid or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking.
Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing and safety glasses. Pour battery acid only into suitable and appropriately marked containers.

1 Move steering into center position IMPORTANT The front wheels must be in the straight-ahead position.  
2.1 Activate Service mode in Tele-Aid emergency call system Only for model 463.243/244/245/247/248/250/254/309/322/323/332/333 with TeleAid - car telephone emergency call system, code ET2 AR82.95-P-0005-03GR

3 Connect quiescent current retention unit   AR54.10-P-1030-07I

4 Disconnect battery ground cable All models except model 463.248 with special protection version, code 979 AR54.10-P-0003G

5 Remove steering wheel   AR46.10-P-0100P
6 Remove instrument panel bottom section on driver's side (2)   AR68.10-P-1505GM 
7 Remove fanfare horns and airbag clock spring contact (A45)   AR46.10-P-0200GS
8.1 Remove combination switch (S4) Model 463.244/245/247/248/249/250/254 309/322/323/332/333 up to 30.6.02 AR54.25-P-2800PR
8.2 Remove steering column switch module (8) Model 463.244/245/247/248/249/250/254/309 /322/323/332/333 as of 1.7.02 up to 31.5.04, 463.243/246 up to 31.5.04
Unscrew clamping bolt (9) and steering column switch module (8) from jacket tube

9.1 Disconnect electrical connectors (4) from EIS control module (N73) and wiring harness Only on model 463.244/245/247/248/249/250/254/309/322/323/332/333 up to 30.6.02  
10 Remove instrument cluster   AR54.30-P-6015GM
11.1 Remove jacket tube paneling (5) from jacket tube Only on model 463.244/245/247/248/249/250/254/309/322/323/332/333 up to 30.6.02
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Observe cable routing.
 
12 Remove steering column cover (7) IMPORTANT Unscrew bolts (6)  
13 Install in the reverse order    
14.1 Deactivate service mode in TELE AID emergency call system Only for model 463.243/244/245/247/248/250/254/309/322/323/332/333 with TeleAid - car telephone emergency call system, code ET2 AR82.95-P-0005-03GR
15 Read out fault memory and erase IMPORTANT STAR DIAGNOSIS
Stored faults which can result from lines being disconnected or from simulation during removal and installation or test work, have to be processed and erased in the fault memories after completing the work
 
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory AD00.00-P-2000-04A

16 Perform basic programming   AR00.19-P-0200P
INSPECT Check     
17 Perform a function test IMPORTANT Check all functions of multi-function steering wheel and switch on jacket tube.  
18 Conduct a road test IMPORTANT Check turn signal return during test drive: When the steering wheel is offset more than one tooth proper turn signal return is no longer ensured.
Airbag indicator light: The SRS indicator should not come on even when the steering wheel is turned to lock in either direction.
Steering wheel position: If the steering wheel is positioned at an angle, move it by a maximum of one tooth; if the deviation is greater: ↓
 
Check and adjust toe on front axle AR40.20-P-0323GG
