Exterior lights (ABL), general
The exterior lights control all the safety and comfort-relevant functions of the front, side and rear lights of the vehicle.
The exterior lights system includes the following subfunctions:
- Function sequence, on-board network increase
- Function sequence for switching off the exterior lights

Function sequence, on-board network increase
When the on-board electrical system voltage is decreased by the on-board electrical system management below the minimum voltage of a light function during normal driving operation, the front SAM control unit can suppress shutoff of the corresponding light function with the aid of the on-board electrical system increase. For this purpose, the front SAM control unit requests the minimum voltage necessary for the corresponding light function. The lighting functions for which the on-board electrical system increase is to be activated are defined during production.
The following functions can be coded:
- Low beam actuation when dark (without code (614) Bi-xenon headlamp unit and without code (618) Bi-xenon headlamp and without code (615) Bi-xenon headlamp unit with integrated curve illumination and without code (616) Bi-xenon headlamp unit with integrated asymmetric curve illumination and without code (621) Intelligent Light System (left-hand traffic) and without code (622) Intelligent Light System (right-hand traffic))
- Backup light actuation
- Actuation of front fog lights (up to 30.11.09 and as of 1.12.09 without code (621) Intelligent light system (left-hand traffic) and without code (622) Intelligent light system (right -hand traffic))
- Rear fog lights actuation
Function sequence for switching off the exterior lights
Switching off the exterior lights prevents the on-board electrical system battery (G1) from being discharged by the active low beam and standing light actuation.
The low beams may be switched on due to the auto on/off headlamps, the daytime running lights or manually via the exterior lights switch. A prerequisite for this is that the status of circuit 15 is On. If circuit 15 is Off, the low beams are switched off.
The standing lights may be on due to the low beams having been manually switched on, due to the auto on/off headlamps or the daytime running lights, or they can be switched on manually via the exterior lights switch.
If the standing lights have been activated because of the manually activated low beams, auto on/off headlamps or the daytime running lights, and the driver door is opened at circuit 15C ON, the standing lights are switched off.
If the standing lights were manually switched on (exterior lights switch set to the "Standing lights" position) then, on model 204.0/2. up to 28.2.11 and on model 204.9 up to 31.5.12, they are not switched off. On model 204.0/2 as of 1.3.11, on model 204.3 and on model 204.9 as of 1.6.12, the standing lights are switched off when the on-board electrical system management determines that the engine's starting capability is impaired because the on-board electrical system battery has been discharged.
If the "Ambient illumination" function is activated via the instrument cluster, it automatically switches itself on when the engine is turned off. The standing lights remain switched on for a fixed time interval of t = 60 s.
