Remove/install front axle - AR33.10-P-0100SX

MODEL 221, 216 without 4MATIC

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
NOTES Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts   AH00.00-N-0001-01A
NOTES Notes on bolted connections with self tapping screws   AH00.00-P-0007-01SF
    NOTES When working on the front-end assembly, be careful not to scratch, mark or notch the surfaces of aluminum parts. Otherwise the service life of the of the parts will be reduced.  
IMPORTANT Notes on Active Body Control suspension   AH32.50-P-0001-01N
IMPORTANT Notes on AIRmatic   AH32.22-P-1000-02SX
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only tighten nuts and bolts of chassis components when vehicle is in a ready-to-drive condition.    
1 Completely discharge all pressure in the front suspension struts (40) using STAR DIAGNOSIS Vehicles with AIRmatic  
2 Deactivate easy entry/exit function Vehicles with code (275) Memory package (driver seat, steering column, mirrors) AR54.30-P-1000-02ESX
3 Turn front wheels to straight-ahead position and secure steering wheel with SPECIAL TOOL holding device. NOTES On a disengaged steering coupling (6) the steering wheel should not be turned because the spiral contact coil will be destroyed.

5 Secure vehicle on vehicle lift   AR00.60-P-0100SX
6 Remove the front wheels    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Remove/install wheels   AP40.10-P-4050SX
7 Remove front suspension struts (40). Vehicles with code Z07, top protection AR32.25-P-1017SXS
Vehicles with AIRmatic and without top protection AR32.25-P-1017SX
Vehicles with code 487, Active Body Control (ABC) AR32.25-P-1017SY
8 From the underside, insert one bolt M8 each into the suspension strut supports on the vehicle and secure with nuts IMPORTANT In order to fix the engine lifting device in position.  
9 Remove upper transverse control arm (8) Vehicles with code Z07, top protection AR33.20-P-0500SXS 
Vehicles without top protection AR33.20-P-0500SX 
10 SPECIAL TOOL Installing protective washers to protect brake disk dust shields   AR42.00-P-0100-01A

11 Unscrew brake lines on the left and right from the brake hoses (39) and seal openings   AR42.10-P-0013SX
12 Unplug electrical connectors of front axle   AR33.10-P-0100-06SX
13 Remove bottom engine compartment paneling Vehicles with code Z07, top protection AR61.20-P-1105SXS
Vehicles without top protection AR61.20-P-1105SX
14 Remove bolts (6a) from engine mounts TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 216 *BA22.10-P-1001-03C 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 221 *BA22.10-P-1001-03D 
15 Remove bolts (15) and detach hydraulic line (17b) from front axle carrier (31) Vehicles with code 487, Active Body Control (ABC)  
16 Attach engine hoist and raise engine NOTES Make sure when lifting out engine that no cables and lines are damaged and that engine does not hit against partition wall. AR33.10-P-0105SX 
17 Separate steering coupling (6)   AR46.10-P-8000SX
18 Disconnect electrical connector (4d) from solenoid valve (Y10)    
19 Detach retaining clamp (4a) from rack-and-pinion steering and engine oil pan Model 216, 221 with electrohydraulic power steering (EHPS) AR46.25-P-3015SXH

20 Remove bolt (4b) and remove pressure line (4c) Model 216, 221 with electrohydraulic power steering (EHPS) AR46.25-P-3015SXH

21 Detach retaining clamp (9) from front axle carrier (31).    
22 Support front axle carrier (31) with portable lifting platform   AR01.10-P-2500-01A
    Lifting platform for major assemblies/scissors-type pallet forklift
 
 
23 Remove bolts (31a) of longitudinal members INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Install new bolts.  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA33.10-P-1001-01K 
24 Lower front axle    
25 Install in the reverse order    
26 Bleed brake system   AR42.10-P-0010SX
27 Fill power steering pump and bleed   AR46.30-P-0010SX
28 Perform wheel alignment check   AR40.20-P-0200SX
