Remove/install transmission with torque converter - AR27.10-P-0500SYZ

TRANSMISSION 722.9 in MODEL 216, 221 with 4MATIC

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Move DIRECT SELECT gear selector switch to position "N"    
2 Release parking brake    
3 Disconnect ground lines from batteries   AR54.10-P-0003SX
4 Secure vehicle on vehicle lift   AR00.60-P-0100SX
5 Remove front axle gear propeller shaft   AR41.10-P-0070SYZ
6 Unclip electrical feed lines from bracket (6) on transmission (5) and place to one side MODEL 216, 221 with ENGINE 156 with TRANSMISSION 722.9
with 4MATICMODEL 216, 221 with ENGINE 157 with TRANSMISSION 722.9
with 4MATICMODEL 216, 221 with ENGINE 273 with TRANSMISSION 722.9
with 4MATICMODEL 216, 221 with ENGINE 278 with TRANSMISSION 722.9
with 4MATICMODEL 221 with ENGINE 272 with TRANSMISSION 722.9
with 4MATICMODEL 221 with ENGINE 276 with TRANSMISSION 722.9with 4MATIC		  
7 Remove shield (1) and disconnect electrical connector from electric controller unit   AR27.40-P-0700-01SX
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, leaf spring to transmission housing *BA27.40-P-1019-01A 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, heat shield to transmission housing *BA27.40-P-1014-01A 
8 Drain transmission oil at oil pan Only drain the automatic transmission fluid when replacing the transmission (5) or torque converter (9).  
  AR27.55-P-0001SYZ
NOTES
Replace seal.
This avoids oil loss.		  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Oil drain screw to oil pan
If transmission oil is burnt or interspersed with abrasive particles:
↓
The oil cooling lines (10L, 10R) and the oil cooler must be flushed out.		 *BA27.10-P-1001-03D 
9 Remove front exhaust bracket (17) from transmission (5) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Engine 272, 273 *BA49.10-P-1008-01Z 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Engine 276, 278 *BA49.10-P-1011-01Z 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Engine 642 *BA49.10-P-1002-01V 
10 Detach bracket (6) of wiring harness on transmission (5) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bracket, wiring harness to automatic transmission *BA27.40-P-1024-01A 
11 Disconnect electrical connector from intelligent servo module (A80)    
12 Support transmission (5) with transmission jack and transmission platform and lash down securely    
13 Remove rear engine cross member (2)   AR22.10-P-1180SW
14 Mark position of front flexible coupling (20v) relative to transmission (5) and to propeller shaft (20) IMPORTANT This is to ensure reinstallation at the ex-factory installation position, otherwise drive line vibrations can be produced.  
15 Remove front flexible coupling (20v)   AR41.10-P-0050-02SX
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking nut, flex disk to transmission or front propeller shaft
When installing the front flexible coupling (20v):
↓		 *BA41.10-P-1001-01H 
Mount front propeller shaft to transmission
If the fitting sleeves are jammed:
↓
Loosen fitting sleeves of flexible coupling (20v).		 AR41.10-P-0050-07SX
  AR41.10-P-0050-09SX
16 Detach torque converter (9) from driven plate (7)   AR27.20-P-0100-01A
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Drain screw to torque converter *BA27.20-P-1001-01C 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, torque converter to driver spider *BA27.20-P-1002-01C

17 Pry torque converter (9) evenly off driven plate (7) using long wedge SPECIAL TOOL Long wedge Figure
18 Detach oil cooling lines (10L, 10R) from transmission (5), transfer case and engine oil pan and place to one side MODEL 216, 221 with TRANSMISSION 722.96with 4MATIC
NOTES Before starting work, the area surrounding the oil cooling lines (10L, 10R) must be thoroughly cleaned in the area of the connecting points on the transmission (5) and transfer case.
Even the smallest dirt particles in the hydraulic components can lead to malfunctions and a total failure of the transmission (5) and transfer case.		 AR27.55-P-0600SYZ
19 Detach starter from transmission (5) MODEL 216, 221 with ENGINE 273 with TRANSMISSION 722.9
with CODE M005 (4MATIC)

IMPORTANT Place starter to the side with lines connected and secure to prevent it falling down.		 AR15.30-P-7100SYZ
20 Remove bolts (8) IMPORTANT Fasten bracket (6) of the electrical feed lines on the transmission (5).  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, automatic transmission to engine *BA27.40-P-1008-01A 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bracket, wiring harness to automatic transmission *BA27.40-P-1024-01A 
21 Remove transmission (5) from below IMPORTANT Secure torque converter (9) to prevent it from falling out.
IMPORTANT Align the holes of the torque converter (9) with the threaded unions (7a) in the driven plate (7).		  
22 Remove torque converter (9) If necessary

23 Remove corrosion from crankshaft   AR03.20-P-1000-01A
Assembly cleaner *BR00.45-Z-1028-04A 
Multi-purpose paste *BR00.45-Z-1009-06A 
INSPECT Check     
24 Check threaded unions (7a) of driven plate (7) For damaged and loose threaded unions (7a):
↓
The driven plate (7) must be replaced.		  
25 Check rear engine mount for wear and damage If necessary:
↓
Replace rear engine mount.		  
26 Check front flexible coupling (20v) for wear and damage    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   If necessary:
↓
Replace front flexible coupling (20v).		 AP41.10-P-4152SX
27 Install in the reverse order    
28 Check transmission oil level and correct if necessary MODEL 216, 221 with TRANSMISSION 722.96with 4MATIC AR27.00-P-0270SYZ 
29 Read out fault memory and erase if necessary    
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS AD00.00-P-2000-04A
30 Perform transmission adaptation using diagnostic system After replacement or repair of transmission (5)  
31 Reset data on service life of torque converter lockup clutch using diagnostic system After replacing torque converter (9)  
DANGER Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
32 Test run engine and check transfer case and transmission (5) for leaks and function
