General
The TV combination tuner (analog/digital) (A90/1) makes it possible to receive analog and digital television channels in the vehicle and view them on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
Analog as well as digital TV signals are received via the antenna structure already present. The function is therefore described together. However, it should be noted that the TV combination tuner (analog/digital) separates the video and audio signals from each other. The TV mode is therefore comprised as follows:
- Function sequence, TV signal reception
- Function sequence, video signal
- Function sequence, audio signal
- Supplemental information
Operating instructions
The TV functions in the TV menu item can be selected, activated and set with the control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
Function sequence, TV signal reception
The antenna signals for TV reception are received by the following antennas and routed via direct lines and the corresponding amplifier to the TV combination tuner (analog/digital):
- TV antenna 1 in the right rear side window
- Right antenna amplifier module (A2/65)
- TV antenna 2 in rear window
- Rear window TV antenna amplifier (A2/92)
- TV antenna 3 in rear window
- TV rear window antenna amplifier
- TV antenna 4 in the left rear side window
- Left antenna amplifier module (A2/64)
Function sequence, video signal
After the antenna signals for TV reception have been processed in the TV combination tuner (analog/digital), the video signals are output as follows:
- Direct Y-brightness (luminance)/C-color data (chrominance) (Y/C) line
- COMAND operating, display and controller unit
Function sequence, audio signal
After the antenna signals for TV reception have been processed in the TV combination tuner (analog/digital), the audio signals on vehicles with code (810) Sound system are relayed via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
From the COMAND operating, display and controller unit the audio signals are forwarded via MOST to the amplifier for sound system (N40/3), with code (810) Sound system, and from there, via direct lines, to the following speakers:
- Speaker Left front door (H4/5)
- Right front door speaker (H4/6)
- Left rear door speaker (H4/3)
- Right rear door speaker (H4/4)
- Left front door tweeter (H4/33)
- Right front door tweeter (H4/34)
- Left rear door tweeter (H4/35)
- Right rear door tweeter (H4/36)
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill) (H4/27)
- Left rear surround speaker (H4/54)
- Right rear surround speaker (H4/57)
The audio signal for the subwoofer speaker (H4/29) travels from the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via MOST to the amplifier for sound system and from there, via direct lines, to the subwoofer amplifier (N40/9) and then to the subwoofer speaker.
In vehicles without code (810) Sound system, the audio signals are output by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker
- Left rear door speaker
- Right rear door speaker
- Left front door tweeter
- Right front door tweeter
- Left rear door tweeter
- Right rear door tweeter
Supplemental information
The supplemental information is subdivided into the following categories:
- TV reception
- Additional functions
TV reception
TV reception is subdivided into 2 subcategories:
- Analog TV reception
- Digital TV reception
Analog TV reception
The TV combination tuner (analog/digital) receives and processes analog terrestrial television programs broadcast in all standards. The audio quality is limited to "MONO". The TV system operates with a total of 3 reception modules for video and audio signals. The "PLL tuners" that are used cover a reception range of 30 to 866 MHz.
In the process, the TV combination tuner (analog/digital) supports reception of the "PAL/SECAM" and "NTSC" TV standards. The TV combination tuner (analog/digital) has 4 antenna inputs for the TV signals from the amplifiers listed above. The listed amplifiers are not assigned to any particular TV tuner, but rather can be used by each TV tuner in an identical manner.
Digital TV reception
In addition to analog television stations, it is also possible to receive terrestrial television stations broadcasting digital signals with the antenna structures already present. The Digital Video Broadcasting Terrestrial (DVB-T) standard is supported. In contrast to analog TV, the audio can be received in stereo here. The switchover from analog to digital TV reception is accomplished by the TV combination tuner (analog/digital) automatically, depending on the current reception status. It is not possible for users to switch over themselves.
However, switchover between alternative channels as well as between analog and digital reception can be prevented with the "Fix channel" control function. If stations with matching stations names are received (e.g. ARD analog and digital), only one entry is made in the list of stations.
DVB-T can be used with a conventional antenna to receive more programs and in better quality.
Additional functions
The TV combination tuner (analog/digital) possesses the following functions:
- Video text (pages: 100 to 899)
- Station list of channels currently receivable
- Display of information about currently selected broadcast
- Last settings
- National settings
Videotext function
Some stations, primarily in central Europe, offer videotext in addition to their television program. The TV combination tuner (analog/digital) is therefore equipped with its own videotext decoder. Only videotext broadcast with Latin ASCII characters are supported, i.e. Greek or Cyrillic characters are not supported.
As of 1.7.09 the TV combination tuner will support the following functions:
- Electronic Program Guide:
Enables reception and display of information about the broadcast (e.g. title, time, duration of broadcast, encryption, program category, age restriction, etc.).
- The rear entertainment system (with code (864) Rear entertainment system or code (866) Rear entertainment preinstallation) directly accesses the TV combination tuner, since it operates independently of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
