Networking of components
The emergency call system control unit consists primarily of two modules:
- Navigation module
- Communication module
The navigation module is a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver in the emergency call system control unit, which allows precise position determination. The position and direction of motion of the vehicle are determined automatically and provided in the form of a history. The navigation module receives its GPS data from the GPS antenna from the roof antenna module.
The communications module is a cellular adapted to the American cellular mobile telephone network telephone (AMPS or CDMA), which is used for handling the telematics functions only.
The communications module transmits and receives its data over the TELE AID antenna from the roof antenna module. In the event of an emergency, the system also contains a TELE AID backup antenna, which is wired discretely to the emergency call system control unit.
This is installed on the left C-pillar at the height of the side window. The emergency call system switches over to the TELE AID backup antenna when the connection quality is better or in case of failure of the roof antenna module due to an accident.
For functional reliability reasons, the communications module is equipped with a permanently connected hands-free system (microphone and emergency call speaker). Voice input (hands-free speaking) is possible using the hands-free system microphone group in the interior rearview mirror housing.
The voice output for the emergency call system is always accomplished over the emergency call speaker (center cockpit speaker (centerfill) (H4/27)), which is discreetly wired to the emergency call system control unit.
The emergency call system control unit is not used for regular telephone calls.
Basic functions
- Performs cyclic self-diagnosis
- Keeps vehicle data available and transmits them securely in case of requirement
- Transmits data messages (with the aid of SMS)
- Placing telephone calls in hands-free mode
Function requirements
The emergency call system is operational as of an active circuit 30. When circuit 15R is active, the emergency call system control unit performs a self-test (approx. 3.5 s). If the test was successful, the system is operational.
System functions
The emergency call system control unit is used to implement current and future vehicle-specific services. The services currently supported are:
- Authorization
- Emergency call (Alarm Identification on Demand (TELE AID)) automatic/manual (incl. police emergency call number "911")
- MB-Info service
- Telediagnosis/roadside assistance
- Tracking (dynamic assignment)
- Remote door unlock (unlocking vehicle in case of emergency)
All telematics services are integrated in the emergency call system control unit and run fully automatic. Any telematics service has to be authorized individually. Possible messages are displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster or in the display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit.
Authorization
A prerequisite for the use of the services is a communications module of the emergency call system control unit, authorized for the corresponding service, i.e. the communications module of the emergency call system control unit must have been configured, ex-factory, with the call number of the corresponding service provider. Subsequently, the user has to be authorized in the service center, over this call number. The authorization can already be done, in part, at the factory.
Emergency call (Alarm Identification on Demand (TELE AID))
Misuse of an emergency call alarm is subject to punishment!
The emergency call system is activated using two different methods:
- automatically in the event of an accident, rollover or airbag deployment
- manually by actuating the SOS pushbutton switch in the overhead control panel control unit
In both cases, an emergency call message (SMS) is transferred to the closest emergency call center immediately.
The automatic emergency call is triggered by the restraint system control unit. An emergency call is sent out regardless of the severity of the accident. For this purpose, a discreet digital crash signal containing the accident information is sent to the emergency call system control unit by the restrain system control unit.
Simultaneously, redundant crash information is transferred to the emergency call system control unit over the Controller Area Network bus, class C (engine compartment), the central gateway control unit and the Controller Area Network bus, class D (diagnosis). The crash information reports on the type of accident (head-on, rear end, side or rollover accident).
The manual emergency call is actuated by pressing the SOS pushbutton switch integrated into the overhead control panel control unit. It is connected discreetly to the emergency call system control unit and must be pressed for longer than 0.5 s. When a manual emergency call has been sent, the red LED in the SOS pushbutton switch flashes.
In the event of an emergency call, the COMAND operating, display and control unit as well as any active telephone connection and any active service call (MB-Info, roadside assistance call, etc.) are interrupted (muted).
Data automatically transferred with an emergency call include:
- Phone number
- Vehicle data (accident data and circuit status)
- Position data
- Direction of travel and speed
The emergency call data are sent to the next closest emergency call center by the emergency call system control unit. Simultaneously, a telephone connection to the emergency call center is completed in parallel.
If automatic connection to the emergency call center is not possible, a telephone connection to the emergency call number "911" is automatically completed. In this case, no emergency call data are transmitted. The emergency call data must then be communicated verbally. In the event of a manual emergency call, this process can be configured by the user.
Emergency calls are terminated
- normally by the emergency call center or
- by the emergency call system control unit after five unsuccessful dialing attempts.
MB-Info service
This service can be activated manually by pressing the information button on the MB-Info and telediagnosis button group. This service makes it possible for the customer to call up information on Mercedes-Benz products as well as other voice-based services (e.g. current traffic conditions, hotel reservations, etc.). This service is primarily a voice service and is handled by the communications module in the emergency call system control unit. If this service is authorized and no added-value service is active, the following data are transferred by the communications module to the service center:
- Vehicle position
- Customer identification data
- Vehicle identification data
The MB-Info service is terminated by the service center.
Telediagnosis/roadside assistance
This service can be manually activated by pressing the breakdown assistance button in the MB-Info and telediagnosis button group. The voice connection completed with this service allows the user to contact a service center in the event of a breakdown in the vehicle. The service center can then perform remote diagnosis and initiate effective help measures, in consideration of further vehicle-specific data. For this purpose, the following data are automatically transferred to the service center:
- Vehicle position
- Customer identification data
- Vehicle identification data
- Vehicle condition data
The telediagnosis/roadside assistance service is terminated by the service center.
Tracking
This service can be actuated by
- theft message from customer or
- anti-theft alarm system in vehicle (active for at least 30 s).
After actuation, the vehicle position and vehicle condition data are transferred to the service center by the communications module. From there, the data are forwarded to the police or other security services.
The position is transferred cyclically or on the basis of various events:
- Exceeding a certain distance
- Switching the ignition on/off
- Recognition of damage/manipulations to vehicle
In the event of a hazard, the service center can build up a voice connection with the occupants.
This service is terminated by the service center.
Remote Door Unlock
If a customer has locked his vehicle key in the vehicle, the vehicle can be opened via its service center "Remote door unlock". For this purpose, it is necessary to notify a service center, provide legitimization and request that the vehicle be remotely opened. When the rear-end door handle switch (S88/9) is actuated for 15 s, the vehicle reports to the responsible service center with the communications module. It checks whether a request is simultaneously present from the customer. After successful plausibility, the vehicle receives a "Remote door unlock" request from the service center via two-way radio. After activation of the service, a message appears on the instrument cluster multifunction display indicating execution to the customer.
This service is terminated by the service center.
Fault messages
The emergency call system control unit performs a self-test cyclically. If an error occurs, the red LEDs in the SOS button and in the MB-Info and telediagnosis button group illuminate. A corresponding error message also appears in the instrument cluster multifunction display and on the display in the COMAND operating, display and control unit. The red LEDs continue to illuminate until the error is eliminated or circuit 15 has been switched off. The buttons are monitored. If a button sticks, this is recognized and the error signal ignored so that the system remains ready for operation.
The restraint systems control unit sends a LIFE signal every 500 ms. This indicates to the emergency call system control unit that the crash recognition feature is operating properly.
Priorities
The emergency call system control unit has a priority management feature to ensure that a number of services are not managed simultaneously in the emergency call system control unit. This determines the time at which a service is activated and which service is "more important". The emergency call system control unit releases the appropriate resources depending on the priority list, depending on which service is to be activated and activates the service or refuses activation because a higher value service is presently active.
Automatically completing an emergency call has the highest priority.
