General 

The rear entertainment system is the entertainment system for rear passengers. It is also referred to as the RSE (R  ear S  eat E  ntertainment).

The elements of the rear entertainment are:

DVD player 

The audio/video splitter module AVS control unit integrated in the DVD player is the central element. It controls and processes the signals of the internal DVD drive and of the optional equipment that can be connected to the AUX inputs.

It allows the rear passenger to use all of the audio and video sources connected to the DVD player while traveling, independently of the installed COMAND operating, display and controller unit or radio and navigation unit (A2/56) or radio (A2). The user can operate the DVD player using the rear entertainment remote control and the function keys on the rear displays.

Rear displays 

These are integrated in the front seats and are used to display all user-related information. These are graphical displays for user guidance and operation and video signal displays.

Each rear display has the following elements:

An LVDS (LVDS = L  ow-V  oltage D  ifferential S  ignaling) transmission procedure is used for transmitting video and audio between the DVD player and the rear displays.

Communication between the rear displays and the DVD player takes place using the telematics CAN.

System functions 

Function requirements 

All functions are available as of active circuit 30. The system can be started by switching on the rear display.

The audio signals can be output via the speakers with the COMAND operating, display and control unit, the radio and navigation unit or the radio switched on.

Functions 

The following applications are available in the rear entertainment system:

TV reception via TV tuner 

The TV tuner offers all playback options known from the predecessor model series. The interface is generated by the DVD player and shown on the rear displays.

All settings are made via the remote control. The headphone jacks, or alternately on vehicles with SA sound, the vehicle speakers are used as audio outputs.

Play CDs and DVDs using the DVD player 

The signals (video signals) of the DVD player can only be shown on the rear display.

The video signals can be shown on one of the rear displays or both at the same time. The operating interface is generated by the DVD player and shown on the rear displays.

The headphone sockets are used as the audio output. The audio signal can also be output over the vehicle speakers. In this case the output is controlled via the COMAND operating, display and control unit.

Additional AUX input functions 

Two additional video or audio sources can be connected to the rear entertainment system via the AUX inputs of the DVD player.

Examples are:

The DVD player does not provide a device-specific interface for these devices. The video signal can be shown on one or both rear displays. The headphone sockets are used as the audio output. If only one rear display is switched on, only the relevant headphone socket is used. The audio signal can also be output over the vehicle speakers. In this case the audio output is controlled via the COMAND operating, display and control unit, for example.

Control of sound system 

The sound system amplifier that is installed as special equipment is connected to the MOST bus. The audio signals are transmitted by the DVD player via an analog low frequency line to the COMAND operating, display and control unit, for example, and from there via the MOST bus to the sound system amplifier, which outputs the audio signals via the speakers.

If no amplifier for sound system is installed, the output of audio signals via the speakers is ensured by e.g. the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

Operation 

Switching on 

The system is activated by switching on the display. To switch on a rear display, press the "ON/OFF" button on a rear display. A display can also be switched on by pressing the "ON/OFF" button on the rear entertainment remote control with active circuit 15R. The corporate identity is first displayed on the screen for about 6 seconds. Then the last entertainment application called up on this rear display is started.

Base functions

can be operated using the keys of the rear entertainment remote control.

Disc applications 

If the "DISC" button is pressed on the rear entertainment remote control, the inserted CD or DVD is detected automatically and the relevant screen is displayed.

If no CD or DVD has been inserted or a valid data format was not detected, an error message is displayed on the screen.

The equipment is operated and adjusted using the rear entertainment remote control via soft keys at the edge of the screen. The soft keys can be scrolled through using the rotary wheel of the rear entertainment remote control.

To activate a soft key or acknowledge a setting, push vertically down on the rotary wheel. If a soft key has been activated, the setting can be made within six seconds. If nothing is done within six seconds, the display returns to the base display.

Screen display of TV application 

When the "TV" button on the remote control is pressed, the TV screen display appears. Independently from the setting of the head unit (HU), the analog and digital TV stations that can currently be received can be selected.

Additionally, the video text function is available.

The TV picture can be displayed in full screen mode. In the process, the menu is hidden and the TV picture fills the entire display.

AUX applications 

External devices such as video consoles and DVD players can be connected via the AUX connections on the DVD player. These devices are detected automatically.

The relevant screen is displayed, depending on whether a device with video or audio output is detected. The information only appears on the rear displays using menu item "AUX1" or "AUX2".

The functions are controlled by the device that is connected to the AUX input.

System settings base menu 

The following adjustments can be made in the system settings:

The speaker menu item is used to select whether the audio data from the left or right side of the rear entertainment are output via the speakers. The audio signal output to the speakers is controlled via the COMAND operating, display and control unit, for example.
