Position finding and destination-oriented navigation, function - GF82.61-P-2010G

Global positioning system, function requirements (GPS) position finding 

General 

GPS is available worldwide. The GPS satellites permanently transmit time and position data (longitude and latitude). A new GPS position (after interruption of the satellite reception) can take several minutes (up to t = 20 minutes when the equipment is commissioned).

Since GPS operates in the giga hertz (GHz) range (microwaves) and the signals are weak, reception interference can occur as a result of the following events:

Position finding function sequence 

The position finding function consists of the following component functions:

Function sequence for GPS position finding 

The GPS signals are received by the GPS receiver integrated in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit directly by the GPS antenna at the front left. The GPS signals are used by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit to calculate the vehicle's position at any given time (receiver). Moreover, the direction of motion is determined with the aid of the sequence of the calculated locations.

Basic position finding function sequence 

For basic position finding the COMAND operating, display and controller unit requires signals from the following components:

The data of the turn rate sensor integrated into the COMAND operating, display and controller unit are processed within the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

The steering angle signal is read in by the steering column module and forwarded over the interior CAN to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

The electronic ignition switch control unit receives the data on the direction of travel (forwards or backwards) through the drive train CAN from the electronic selector lever module control unit. The electronic ignition switch control unit sends the signals over the interior CAN to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit uses the distance traveled, the vehicle alignment and the direction of travel to determine the vehicle's current position (longitude and latitude).

The movement or transportation of the vehicle with circuit 15 OFF (ignition switched off) falsifies the basic position finding. In both cases, the deviation is automatically corrected by the navigation processor integrated in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit, provided GPS data are received.

IMPORTANT Wheel calibration is necessary following a tire change. To this end entry of the tire size and coding, as to whether new tires (tread depth approx. 5 to 10mm) or used tires (tread depth approx. 3 to 5mm) have been mounted, are required. Entries are made using the diagnostic tester or directly via the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. A special calibration journey is not required.

Destination-oriented navigation function sequence 

Route calculation is accomplished using the options set to the best possible extent. If observance of the options is not possible, then the options set are ignored for the sections in question and a message is displayed and signaled audibly.

The set criteria and options can be displayed and changed at any time. After a successful calculation, the route is displayed on the map and this information is then relayed acoustically -"Route calculated".

The destination-oriented navigation consists of the following component functions:

Function sequence for destination-oriented navigation through voice output 

The navigation processor integrated into the COMAND operating, display and controller unit constantly compares the route calculation data against the position finding data and derives measures for the remaining destination-oriented navigation process.

With model 463.249/271 or with model 463.248/270/341 with code (E66) Sound system (Harman/Kardon) the voice output is provided by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via the sound system amplifier to the speakers. On model 463.248/270/341 without code (E66) Sound system (Harman/Kardon) and model 463.247/254/303/340 voice output is issued by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via direct lines at the speakers.

Destination-oriented navigation function sequence through visual display 

The map display is always controlled by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. The following display functions are supported:

Function sequence for dynamic route guidance (except model 463.249/271) 

The current traffic situation is taken into consideration in the dynamic route guidance. The incoming information on the traffic situation can be received by the radio data system/Traffic Message Channel (RDS/TMC) function. Information on the current traffic situation is sent out by a specially equipped broadcasting corporation on an area-related basis.

For this purpose a corresponding station must be tuned in. The traffic data recorder decodes the traffic information and forwards it internally to the navigation processor upon request. The navigation processor makes the decision whether the route should be changed. If necessary, a message that the route should be changed is output via the speakers.

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit receives traffic messages on model 463.247/248/249/270/271/340/341 from the amplifier module 1, window antenna (A2/71) and on model 463.254/303 from the radio and cell phone antenna (A28) via the radio and cell phone antenna splitter (A28/1). Traffic messages are stored in the traffic data recorder in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and made available to the integrated navigation processor. The voice output for dynamic route guidance is sent over the MOST ring to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and for vehicles with code (E66) Sound system (Harman/Kardon) to the sound system amplifier. The audio signal reaches the speakers via direct lines.
