IMPORTANT The navigation processor of the radio and navigation unit (A2/56) with code (525) Audio 50 APS MB radio is integrated into the control unit. On the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) with code (527a) COMAND APS (with navigation) the external navigation module is called navigation processor (N41/1).

Navigation system

With the aid of the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3), the location of the vehicle and the direction and distance from the destination (after destination input) are determined by the navigation processor (N41/1). Then the required measures for reaching the destination are started (navigation).

The navigation system is already activated by opening the driver's door (in the background) This makes it immediately ready for operation after initialization with the control unit. A DVD drive is integrated in the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) for reading the digital map data.

After the "NAV" button is pressed, the message "Please insert navigation CD" appears in the navigation CD screen

IMPORTANT If an incorrect or illegible CD, e.g., audio CD, is inserted, an error message appears (in this menu).

Destination entry

The destination is entered menu-assisted via the operating unit and is processed by the navigation processor (N41/1). The COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) offers in navigation mode the following alternatives for destination entry:

Predictive text input

When entering destination data, the next possible letters are displayed and it is then possible to adopt the relevant letter in the destination entry.

Dynamic supplementation

This function is realized with the manual entry of the destination. While entering a destination the letters which are still missing are completed from an existing list. The supplemented characters have a black background. Deleting can be accomplished character by character.

The following submenus are displayed in the "Special destinations" menu:

Position finding

The COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) calculates continuously the location of the vehicle with the aid of the following procedures:

The navigation processor (N41/1) calculates the most likely position by constantly comparing the location results of these three methods.

Route calculation

The route is calculated in the navigation processor (N41/1) after destination input or automatically after a deviation from the proposed route.

With the dynamic navigation system, the route calculation is influenced by incorporating traffic information via an external provider by means of radio (TMC). The calculated route is stored in the navigation processor (N41/1).

Navigation starts once the navigation processor (N41/1) has carried out the route calculation.

3 types of display can be selected for graphic navigation:

The map presentation is always controlled by the operating unit The system supports the following functions:

It is possible to change arbitrarily between the types of presentation. The destination-finding system is also supported by voice output from the vehicle loudspeakers.

IMPORTANT If the multi-standard drive is not used for navigation, it is also possible to play Audio CD's or video DVD's
